Loxpox, June 27.—Sir William Aitken, the noted surgeon and profesor of pathology, is dead. Sir William Aitken was born in Dundee, Scotland, April 23, 1825, his father being @ surgeon of that place. In 1848 he was eclected aa demonstrator of anatomy at the University of Glasgow, and was also pathologist of the Glas- oval Infirmary until April 1955, when he volunteered for service m army hospitals during the Crimean war. He was one of the com- mission appointed to investigate the nature of diseases from which the troops were suffers ing. Dr. Aitken was a corresponding member of the Royal Imperial Socicty of Physicians of Vienna, of the Society of Medicine and Nataral History den and the Imperial Society of Medicine at i inople, In 1860 he was appointed f pathology in the army medical school, He was knighted in 1861.
