Washingtonians who wanted all the news | about the Minneapolis convention ‘ind who | wanted it ina hurry knew where it could be had. They came down street and up street and finally bunched themselves in front of Tax Stan office. In order that everybody might have | a chance to read the clearly stated story of the | convention proceedings a big sereen had been hoisted into position on the ith street side of | the office and facing toward Pennsylvania ave- nue. On the balcony was the stereopticon and | near the stereopticon were the men who op- | erated it. Inside the building in one of the editorial rooms special dispatches were received by one of Tne Stan's operators, and as rapidly as the bulletins arrived they were rewritten on glass and displayed on the screen. THE SHOWER DOES NOT DRIVE THEM AWAY. At the outset the crowd was amused and edi- fied by the production of « number of pictures | which had no direct or other connection with | convention proceedings. This was done because | bu: few happenings of interest had transpired between the publication of Tue Stan and the | evening session. There is a difference of one | hour between local and Minneapolis time, and | as the convention did not assemble until 8:45 | thece was only a little gossip to show the crowd | hore up to 10 o'clock. Rain, which fell briskly for a while, sent as many people into Tax STAR business office as could conveniently get in, | while hundreds of others secured shelter be- | neath adjacent awnings and in neighboring doorways. IT WAS A BLAINE cRowD. | Afterawhile, just when therain ceased, thestory of the Alabama contest commenced to arrive and from that time until long after 1 a.m. the multi- | tude was great and enthusiastic. It was a | Blaine crowd when it started out. It cheered | Harrison's picture and treated McKinley, Reed and Sherman with Proper consideration,” but it came nearer to do its vocal best when the photograph of the white plumed knight | was thrown on the «crecen. Throughout | the entire evening, though, there was one steadfast follower of the administration. | He sat on the concrete with his back propped | up against the fence which surrounds the post | office site. His voice was peculiarly shrill and his Iungs were never out of order. a ail times—opportune or ino] ne—he for Harrison, and not ia Frequently be yelled me. CHEERING CHANGED WITH THE KEWS. By and by it began to appear as though the President's friends were getting the best of the | argument in Minneapolis and there was an evi- dent disposition on the part of cautious poli- | ticians to help out the f ce supporter. it was plain that the anti- on people had | been set back by the development of a some- | what surprising majority there was » marvelous growth of administration sentiment and marked | increase in the volume of administration cheers. | Many of the onlookers were deeply interested in the struggle over the Alabama case and at | least a hundred of them had pencils and note | books out keeping their own tally on the as the vote by states was announced. THE CROWD GETS “‘aoop sIeRT.” At2a.m. there was «till a respectable gather- | ing in front of the bulletin screen and. it was not until 2:25, when the announcement of a re- cess was made, that the erowd departed for | home. Last to ‘leave was the administration | man, who had been so lonesome during the | earlier portion of the night. His voice was in | first-rate condition and his ardor unabated. He went down Pennsylvania avenue not far be- hind a gentleman from Swampoodle, who had | on several occasions interrupted the flow of re- publican harmon anding a reply to his | imperious inquiry of “What's the matter with Dave Hill?” ————— A Remarkable State of Affairs. | To the Editor of The Evening Star: | Tobserve that it is now discovered that the law forbidding the sale of liquor within one | mile of the Soldiers’ Home is of no account. | It certainly is very strange that with three 25,000 Commissioners, several district attor- | neys and any number of lawyers on both Sen- [ate and House District committees, to say | nothing of the four hundred and odd members | and Senators, that so simple a matter as that could not be embodied in a law that would stand the test. If our officials and con sional city council cannot do any better thar | that, then Teuggest that they turn the matte: over to the citizens or the women and let ther | try their hand at it. Lewis McKensie has presented another handsome American fing to the boys of Wash- ington public school, to be hoisted on the new staff recently presented to that school. The original trustees of this school were nearly all soldiers of the revolution, one of them, Col. John Fitzgerald, having been an ide-de-camp of Washington. ’ The school at first designed by the donation of Washington to educate “orphans and the sons of widows,” has expanded to include in its twelve divisions nearly all the white boys who are be- img educated in Alexandria, reaching all grades from Col. Ficklin’s High School to Miss Sisson's kindergarten for little boys. The building over which the national flag waves is a copy of the Amidon building in South Washington, and its annex, with three school rooms, is the old Acad- emy . building where Gen. Washington estab- lished his public free school in 1784. All the schools are flourishing. LIKE THE NEW FASHION. The Methodist Protestant church has grown wonderfully in the esteem of the Alexandria ladies since the lug conference struck “obey” from the marriage service, and a “combine” of the handsomest young women in town is now to be organized on the principal ‘all marringes shall hereafter be celebrated after the M.
