EMD OF A GAS WAR IN CLEVELAND, Standing of the Graduating Naval Cadets. TALENT AND TOUTS UPSET. Sir Hugo Won the Derby and the Favorites ‘Were in the Rear, Loxpox, June 1.—The day on which all Englishmen from royalty to costermonger are interested dawned with overcast skies and cold | weather, which caused apprehension that the great race for the derby stakes would be ran in rain, as was the race last veur. Ax the dav ad- vanced, however, the skies cleared and the weather became delightful, inducing enormous crowds to start for the Epsom Downs. A. large number of special trains were run from London ‘and other cities and all were packed and | jammed with humanity bound for the race track. The most interesting scene, however, was the yebicular procession on the road to the Downs. Early in the morning the procession began. Year after year the same scene has been wit- nessed, yet it loses neither in attractiveness nor interest. Here could be seen the dashing four- in-hand, the horses sleek and shining with their careful grooming, their harness ‘cli jingling merrily as the ‘spirited animals » along the road with a merry party on board. Next, perhaps, would come a cart drawn by a dilapidated specimen of the equine race, whose owner in his way was as decply interested in the outcome of the race as the noble lord who drove the fonr-in-hand, The sporting interest of every man of and it can be truthfully said of every woman in. the Procession was keenly alive on this day of days the English horse-loving world, ; one of them was anxious to see a close race for the honor and money that awaits the derby winner. Everybody wore smiling faces and badinage was freely indulged in on every side. Last year, as before stated, the race was ran in a drenching rain and only eleven horses came to the post, the winner being the famous brown colt Common, owned by Sir F. Johnstone. Com- mon’s easy victory last year was a subject of discussion, and it was the general opinion that the horse who won today would have to work harder than did Common to carry off the prize. At noon the scene on the Downs was a most brilliantly animated one, and thongh none of the members of the royal family attended the race, owing to their being in mourning for the Duke of Clarence and Avondale, the event seemed in no way to have lost in popularity. It rained last night, but though this for the time being dampened the hopes of thousands of people it was a really t benefit, resulting in risa the course in better shape than it has been for along time. It was held by a ma- jority of the betting fraternity that-the wost dangerous opponents of La Fleche would "be Mr. Rose's colt Bonavista and Cal. North's colt El Diablo. Again was the fallibility of sports- men’s judgment displayed, for when the race was finished Bonavista and El Diablo did not even have a place. The conditions nnder which the race was run were 28 follows: The derby of 6,000 sovereigns, the winner to receive 5,000 sovereigns, the nominator of the winner 500 sovereigns, the owner of the second 300 sovereigns and the owner of the third 200 out of the race; for three-year-olds; colts 9 stones and fillies § stones, 9 Ibs.; entrance 5 sovereigns, the only liability, if declared by the first Tuesday in January, 1891, 20 sovereigns, with at least 1,000 sovereigns given from the race fund; about one mile and a half (260 subs., 137 of whom paid 25 sovereigns each and 68 5 sovereigns each. ) The horses got away at 3:30 o'clock. Bucen- taure made most of the running until a quarter of a mile from home. Here Sir Hugo drew to the front and coming on won by three-quarters ofa length. There was a length between La Fleche and Bucentaure. St. Angelo was fourth. parconr Toate. HOW THE CADETS STAND. Rank of This Year's Graduates From the Naval Academy.
