A CATHOLIC CLUB. The Recent Progress of the Gonzaga Athletic Organization. CLUB ROOM AND GYMNASIUM. ‘Well as Mental and Moral Improvement Looked After—Ofticials and Members. HE LATE FATHER Maguire, who «pent so much time and energy in St. Aloysius parish to build up a large con- gregation and the neces- sary church societies ifhe could return and ree what has been done, would certainly repeat a hearty amen. The wonderful advance and inprovements that have been made in the clas- sic shades of Gonzaga valley would be as pleas- img to the eye of the father as would the formation of the societiés be pleasing to his very soul. Not the least important adjunct is the flourishing organization known as the Young Men's Catholic Club of Gonzaga College. Several attempts had been made to organize such a club in this parish, nearly all of which had as their object literary or dramatic advance- ment, but after a year or two the membership would y decrease as would interest in the clu! is ‘UNDER FATHER GILENSPIM'S LEADERSMIP. Under the leadership of Rev. Father Gilles- pie the club has grows in numbers, until now there are nearly 300 names on the first-class club, including gymuadum, tennis and base bail he Messrs. K. F. Downing and E. J. Wall, in the summer of 1339, paid a visit to friends in Bos- ton, New York and other northern citie: having reeeived their education at the schools | of the Jesuit fathers they naturally paid visits | to Jesuit colleges in these cities. They were astonished to find such large societies existing | thes | around these colleges and they thongh should have a society in Washington, whe some of the best men from all over the country attend college. STARTING OF THE CLUB. When they returned all things were ready for the constanmation of their desires. The priests had just moved into their grand new parochial residence, leaving one side of Gonzaga Col-| lege vacant. Rev. Father MeGark, who was then pastor, kindly do the vacant rooms place of meeting. wwppened that Father <\ O'Connor, 8. The of past experience saw that a ful must cater to the different young men, so it was decided to e features that would attract them. The tertainment given by the club was a we success. While all the members of ‘the club were sorry at the departure of Father McGurk, S.J., for a new field of labor, no one could have been more acceptable than the present rector, Father Gil- lespie, S.J... who from the time he has been rector of Gonzaga College has by every means in his pewer advanced the interests of the ¥.M.C.C.G.C. He was at one time a teacher in orough liamentary law, and the elub ‘Was attended with the same success which has since followed 11, MR. M'GRANS'S SECOND THM. At the expiration of Mr. Hall's term of office Mr. McGrann was called for the second time to the presidency. During his second term of office the club joined the National Catholic Young Men's Union and sent as delegates to the Philadelphia convention Messrs. Hall Downing. The latter read a paper Aim ef Catholic Societies” of which the Church Wes remarked: “One of the brightest papers ead in the convention was “The Aim of Catholic Societies’ by Mr. Downing.” ‘The membership had now increased to sucha great number t # board of directors for the control of the club Decame a necessity, and according!y a new stitution was adopted providing for the gove: ment by the board of directors.
