4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. == +++ April 30, 1892, THE EVENING STAR hasa permanent circulation in for of the the be. EE a i . F I fl z i i ist if g = £ e 4 i located, Rotable event that Boston has cont 2 i 3 large an amount of eapital in introducing and may be in some other places to discard outgrown systems of transportation when they have once obtained foothold and streets capital promises to become the show city of America in improved methods of tion. The abolition of the car horse and the substitution of the most satisfactory me- chanical motor are in the minds and plans of all our city railways. They are investigating and experimenting continually. In two suburban lines we can show to the world as admirable samples of the trolley system ascan be found anywhere. The community is proud of what has been accomplished in developing this sys- tem in the outskirts of the capital, but with fall knowledge of the best type of the trolley it insists that the poles and wires shall be con- fined to the suburbs and not be permitted to disfigure and endanger the city streets. In- teresting experiments with compressed air as = motor have been made by the Brightwood suburban railway. The first device, upon which large sums of money were expended in construction on Brightwood ave- Bue, m conceded to be a failure, but it is claimed that by the direct application of com- Pressed air, without the intervention of acable aa originally proposed, a line is successfully operated in Pullman, Ili, by the same com- pany which owns the Brightwood charter, and it is intimated that this form of pneumatic metor will be tested here. The storage bat- tery is in every-day, practical and satisfactory ‘use on the city extension of the Eckington, and the Metropolitan is spending large sums of money im the development of the greatest storage battery system in the world. Before the summer is over we will have one of ‘the finest cable systems in the country, and rapid transit along Pennsylvania avenue. To complete the list ail that is needed is a thorough ‘test of the electric underground conduit system, which has been successful in Buda-Pesth, Hun- gary, and which bas been experimented with fia 8 few places in this country. —+- + __ ‘The approach of May day is welcomed in the United States; it is a day of warning and per- tarbation in Europe. The reasons for the fact are not far toseek. In this country, with the exception of an experience in Ilinois, one in Wisconsin and some futile threats by John Most, all showing im their results the su- premacy of law and the stern determination of the American public, we have had me asnarchistic troubles in all our history. It is not likely that we will have any considera- ble trouble for slong time to come, provided the immigration laws are properly amended and strengthened. But in the republic of ‘France, due to the different social conditions existing there, and in several of the continental monarchies, great anxiety is felt as the season approaches. In the capitals of France, Spain, Italy, Beigium and Germany fears of a rising of the proletariat are justified by recent occur- Fences. If peace is preserved, in full or meas- Brably, it will be because the alarmed govern- ments take all the necessary steps to overawe the seditious ————+ ee __ Congress is constantly being asked to appro- Priate money to be applied to the commemora- ‘Part of the policy of a good government to stimulate respect for the heroes who have de- fended it Patriotism, though one of the grandest of humar sentiments, has also a prac- tical side.
