As a local NEWS Paper and Advertising Medium it has no competitor. S=— A@vocates of the disfiguring and murderous overhead railway wires have based theif advo- €acy upon the statement that the storage bat- tery and other electric systems of inotor are failures, and that fhe only choice if between thie trolley and the car horse. When sifted this statement is found to mean no more than that the railways cannot make as mach money with the better and more expensive motors a with “the cheap and nasty” variety. The only failure is in the declating of enormons divi- @etids. On the basis of the reasoning which ope the storage battery impracticable, cable iseven s more conspicuous failuro, fot it is still mote expensive, and a greater Stimber of roads will find it (financially) im- practicable, and a failure (as = begetter of dividends) )- ‘The storage battery system of the Eckington Gitension is success so far as the public are eoncerned. Neither the public, the Ecking- tou road, nor the company furnishing the stor- age battery cars expresses dissatisfaction with the Working of the system. That complaint and denunciation of the system as a failure are reserved to those who would plant poles and eadly wires on the beautiful streets and in front of the houses of the people of Washing- ton. ‘The storage battery companies vigorously resent the suggestion that their system isa failure. The president of one of these com- Panies, writing to Tur Stan, says that the difficulty which the Metropolitan has met arises from the fact that instead of purchasing or obtaining license to use existing satisfac- torily working batteries and motors it has been “wasting its time for two or three years past im the futile efforts of inventing or constructing a storage battery that would not infringe exist- ing patents,” .5: in inventing its own “type of motor, and dynamos and other electrical devices, wholly different from the types now in use. ‘This correspondent intimates that the Metro- politan’s failure in this effort is not a failure of the storage battery system, and he adds: “Of ourse no one can question their right to do this and to spend their money in experiments, but such « course can hardly be put forth asa feasonable ground for asking an extension of time as above, nor for attempting to substitute the trolley for the storage battery system.” ‘The public will commend the enterprise and iblic spirit which have led the Motropolitan Dctiemnt to perfect an improved storage bat- fer$ motor, and will wish for the effort the fal tnd speedy success of which the electrician and Officers of thecompany are hopeful. But if the ‘Metropolitan's inventive effort should not suc- Ged, the commanit} would not view the failure @ a failure of the storage battery system, and ‘Would find in this result no excuse whatever for upon it the trolley system. It is also to be remembered that the storage system, while in theory the best since $ supplies each car with an independent motor fmd prevents an Accident at one point from Reprise the whole system, fs not the only ernative to the trolley, even among electric fRotots. This man Afterward, ss before, met and overcgme many obstacles He did what no other man ever did or has done since—found fmd made known the finding of a new World and took possedsion of it in the name of his sovereigns. That he had some faults and weaknesses due to the age in which he lived or to personal defects of character is not denied and rests on his »#>.! evidence. But that he was unworthy of the honors paid to him or the fame he achieved, although asserted by some Fecent investigators with persistent elabora- tion, is far from being conciusively established. ‘The reaction from the ili -reatment and neglect im which he died, after the notable publie serv- fees that he had ren vered, may have carried his fame too high, and for a perfectly accurate estimate of his character some slight exercise of the histérian’s privilege of detraction may fiow be necessary. But it is better to leave Bim a triffe too large in the public estimation to depreciate him unduly, especiatly as the modern tendency is to whitewash the real Villains of the pust, and to prove by elnborate and exhaustive gument that none of them fre half as black as they are painted. The Process ought not to be reversed in the case of Cotumbas, ——— While Mr. Holman's amendment striking out ofthe naval appropriation bill the single new ‘vessel of high grade provided for was defeated, the House passed the measure without the de- Bired increase of the number of armored cruis- ersand battle ships.
