It commenced yesterday with a lunch be- tween Ila. m.and 3 p. m., which was served ‘on the first floor of the armory, which was liberally patronized and which gave great sat- isfaction. This lunch was continued today and attracted even a larger attendance. The fair room at night presented a very attractive ap- pearance, the booths being decorated in the colors of the rainbow and containing many articles of woman's handiwork, which are for sale st moderate prices. The feature of last grening’s entertainment was the singing of the inbow cantata by thirty little ls attired in the raimbow's color. The per- formance wassuchan artistic success that it will be repeated tonight, which will be the last night of the fair. and’ there wili also be several musical numbers by well-known ame teurs. An interesting conicst is the guessing of the name of a beautiful doll named by Birs. Harrison, the guesses being sold. Many chances Were taken last night on the beautiful fruit erke, the weight of which will also be found this evening and the fortunate guesser will “take the cake.” Special features of the rainbow fair are the dancing and the refresh- ment department, which is presided over by bright young ladies and which is extensively patronized by every one. The fair is given toaid in paying for the Wimodaughsis club house on I street. and it deserves the patronage of all who believe in aiding the efforts of woman for her own advancement and improvement — ALEXANDEIA, ASTATE TAX SALE comIxa. ‘The city treasurer, under the direction of the state authoritics, has made the last cail for the taxes of 189, and is now making ready to sell ext week the real estate delinquent here. The state tax on real and personal estate is 40 cents on the 100 of its assessed value. For some Zar past much of the state tax hae been paid this city in coupons, but under the new set- tlement with the English syndicate these coupons will be withdrawn from the market ‘and state taxes paid in cash. GOOD MEN PASSED Away. ‘The Friends or Quakers of Alexandria have disappeared as a distinct society and the last memorial of their corporate existence, the menting bowee on Wolfe and St. Asaph streets, fs now torn down and the bricks will be Used for dwellings on the site of the old church. At one time the Friends were quite numerous here and comprised scores of Alexandria fami- lies. For some years one-third of the mem- bers of the city council, the leading merchants, bank officers, &c., were of that society. Now they buve nearly all passed away “meeting” of the society has existed here for many years. The “Friends” were all active, thrifty citizens and the town owes some of its most Useful institutions to them. SYAERT IurRovemexts.
