Dr. Mendenhall Gives Some Interesting In- formation About the Prelimimary Survey. The attractive lecture hall of the Cosmos | Club was crowded to ite fullest extent and could hold no more than it didlast night at the sixty-fourth meeting of the National Geographic Society. All who were so fortunate as to get within the hall were well repaid, for they listened toa trio of most interesting addresses. The subject for the evening was ‘The Alaskan Boundary Survey,” an illustrated lecture by Mr. J. E. McGrath and Mr. J. H. Turner, with introductory remarks by Dr. T. C. Mendenhall, chief of the United States coast and goedetic survey. In the absence of the president of the society, Mr. Gardiner G. Hubbard, Mr. Everett Hayden called the meeting to order, and after the usual preliminaries had been concluded a resolution was passed simplifying the methods prescribed in the constitution of the society for the elec- tion of new members. Dr. Mendenhall was then introduced to make an introductory address with reference tothe work that has already been done in the preliminary survey of a boun- dary line between Alaska and the British pos- sessions. It could ouly be settled through a joint commission of the two countries. ‘The surveys that are being made are for the purpose of fixing upon certain facts to be presented as the baxis of the claims of the United States when the matter is finally settled. Un March 31, 1967, the treaty was rati- fied which transferred all the territory of Alaska from Russia to the United States, and Dr. Mendenhall said that it would be interest- ing, as bearing upon the point at issue, to rend | so much of the treaty as referred to the bound- ary line. This fixed the line as running from the southern end of Prince of Wales Island along the Portland canal and the summits of certain mountains until it came to the 14lst meridian of longitude, and this it was to fol- Jow as far as the great frozen ocean. ‘The determination of the seacoast line is one of the most important features in connection with the survey, for the treaty says that the Boundary line along the southern strip shall be thirty miles from the coast. ‘This matter is es- ecially important, inasmuch as the claim has Been made that the range of mountains along the summits of which the boundary Jine was to run bas no actual existence. Alaska, one to continue the work of surveying the coast line, and the other to go with the pre- liminary survey of the boundary, and the de- termination more definitely of the position of a number of points, notably Sitka and Mt St Ehas. ‘The determination of the boundary, so far as it coincides with the 14lst meridian, is merely an astronomical problem. Messrs. MeGirath and Turner, both of whom are members of the coast and geodetic survey, Were sent out in 1889 in charge of two parties to Alaska. They reached St. Michael's, eighty or ninety miles from the mouth of the Yukon river, July 6and left there eight days later. Atter reaching Fort Yukon the parties sep- arated, the one led by Mr. McGrath being landed there to prosecute the work, while Mr. ‘Turner's party was carried up the ‘Porcupine. ‘The two gentlemen returned to this country last summer after performing their arduous and dangerous task. Theron | Outwater, pastor of Kendall Baptist Church, ina position which has caused him and his friends no little annoyance. Mr. Outwater was sum- moned to appear in the Police Court because snow which had fallen on the sidewalk in front of the church was not removed. ‘The matter has been looked into by @ com- mittee of minister. composed of Revs. Chas. stor of the First Baptist Church; pastor of the Fifth Baptist . and Samuel H. Greene, pastor Calvary Baptist Chureh, who, with Major W. G. Moore, chief of police, have signed a statement show: img that Rev. Mr. Outwater was en- tirely blameless in the matter and that the mistake was made by the policeman who cited Mr. Outwater instead of the trustees of the church. Mr. Outwater was assured by Lieut. Vernon that his name would be stricken from the papers before the ¢use was called. and that of one of the trustees, Mr. Glenn T. Jones, inserted. Mr. Jones left the necessary collateral. ‘Ihe case, however, was called before the lieutenant reached the court room, and Mr. Outwater was placed in the predicament of appearing to be in contempt of court. Subsequent! the matter was expluined to Judge Kimball, the record was corrected and the good name of Mr. Outwater as one whose character and work have always been on the side of lawand order Vindicated. The chief of police expresses re- xret that the mistake occurred and the police- man has been reprimanded by his lieutenant. pero Nothing Was Accomplished. ‘The adjourned meeting of the encampment | of the Department of the Potomac last evening was a lively one. In fact the demonstrations were so persistent that no business could be done. ‘This arose mainly from the fact that an effort was made to bring up the election ques- tion. Some of the members want the action of the tellers in reporting the result of the vote for commander investigated and others do not consider such action necessary. ‘Ihe encamp- ment was finally obliged to adjourn without accomplishing anything. —— Ivsr Recerven, our entire line of new cele- brated Heywood baby carringes.
