The lady managers of the Garfield Hospital gave a valentine ball at Willard’s Hotel Inst night, when the friends of this charity had a chance to show their interest in it, and they did it with a will. OF MEMBERSHIP SHOWN—UNION VETERANS IN THE DEPARTMENTAL SERVICE—OTHER,REFORTS. The opening session uf the twenty-fourth annual encampment of the Department of the Potomac, G. A. K., was held last evening in the hall of the builders’ exchange. There were « large attendance of members anda lively in- terest was manifested in the contest for the commandership. The reading of the annual reports and routine business mainly occupied the attention of the meeting last evening. It is not expected that any important business will be taken up until after the election of ofi- cers, which will close at!9 o'clock this evening. REPORT OF COMMANDER PIPES. The report of Commander J. M. Pipes gave very fall and interesting account of the yea work in the department. He stated that the ar has been in some respects eventful as well “to suggest thatin our efforts to secure em- ployment for our comrades, widows and fami- lies we met some embarrassments during the year. “First, the civil service commission has zeal- ously guarded its rights under the rules or law ‘Lhe distinguished services rendered by t officers after whom these are named should be an inspiration to ‘growth end usefulness. “The institution of these posts, the contin- uous growth of this department in the way of membership, the consequent increased duties devolving upon the A.
