D.c. FRIDAY, JANUARY 29, 1892 TOMORROW'S BIG STAR. Some of the Features of Saturday's Sixteen- Rage Issue of Interest to All. ‘Tomorrow's Stan will be of anusual interest, and no one should fail to read it. The follow- ing are a few of the special chapters it will con- tain. The story of the week is the last work of Gay de Maupassant, who is now confined in a mad house. The illustrious suthor’s malady had doubtless grown upon him since an in- cipieucy two years ago, but he struggled against the progress of the disease and wrote industriously in Incid intervals. It was during one of these brief spells of clear-mindedness that he began what was to be his very last composition. “The Ghost of the Chateau Saint-Gery” contains in its first two chapters the matter as it came from Maupassant’s pen. His theme seems to have been a psychological consideration of the idea that a thoroughly brave man can be abjectly afraid. The re- maining third of the story, contained in the last chapter, has been written by Leon Favart from a verbal description by Maupassant as to what the conclusion of the remarkable ghost story was to be: ON THE CLOTH OF GREEN (Ilustrated). Daily scenes in Jackson City, the miniature Monte Carlo. ISLAND OF MYSTERY (Illustrated). A strange laud in the midst of the South eas. BEAUTY AT THE BALL, (Iilustrated). Result of the Investigation of the Senate ‘Wing by the Health Officer. ‘The result of the investigations into the sani- ‘tary condition of the Senate wing of the Capi- tol, which has been made by Health Ofiicer Hammett, were detailed in a report submitted yesterday to Senator Aldrich, the chairman of the committee on rules. In this report, which was made by Mr. Rob- inaon, it is stated that the essential features of the plumbing are the same as when the build- amg waserected. The modern devices to se- cure ventilation and prevent the entrance into the building of sewer gas are not in use. The report states that “a brick sewer four feet in diameter, of antique construction, ex- tends under the Senate wing, and the four rain leaders connected with this appear to provide ‘the only means for its flushing and ventilation. ‘This large cavernous sewer should not be mitted to remain, as it is substantially an e| 208 gated cesspool. “Traps are set at the foot of the soil and waste pipes, preventing the circu- lation of air. The soil and waste pipes are not extended above the roof for ventijation. Traps are generally unventilated. When ventilation of traps has been attempted resort has been made to the objectionable plan of ‘down pull’ by artificial means. The water closets, in man} instances, especially in the basement, are sel old-fashioned things as would not be used m the cheapest private houses. A bad sample of water closets aud connectibus is found near the boiler rooms, where several tixtures discharge into a brick receptacle, into which the blow-off from the boilers also discharges. As there is about fifteen inches of excremenial filth ulways deposited here, the effect of discharging hot water into this ‘mass may be better imagined than experienced. We found an ice box and refrigerator connected with the sewer. a prac- tice condemned by every sanitary writer and _ by legislation throughoat the land. surface drains are unprotected by deep- water seats, and in several instances one trap is made to serve several fixtures. A grease trap in one of the store rooms.a steam box con- mected with the trap of a kitchen sink, and the Peer character of the plumbing work in the teben furnish instances of old-fashioned con- nection with which thy present generation of plambers are unfamiliar.” In connection with this report Mr. Shep- herd submits bis reviews. He is in favor of an entire remodeling of the plumbing in this wing of the Capitel. ——e—___. ‘Treasury Offictals Indignant. There ie much indignation at the Troasury Department over the arrest of two of its officers at Montreal upon a charge of con- spiracy preferred by « tailor of that city. Strong intimatiocs are said to have been given that unless the Canadian authorities can protect the United States customs officials who ‘are stationed there for the convenience of ‘the Canadian railways from persecutions of this sort these otticials will be withdrawn and the examination of baggage and other ser- vices now ceadered by ther: will be performed at the frontier, requiring delays oi trains for that purposs, Boston Will Return the Kebel Flag. ‘The Boston common council by a vote of 50 to 12 bas passed the aldermanic order authoriz- ing the return to the surviving members of company E, twelfth North Carolina troops, the fing captured from the cou:pany by the ninth Massachusetts regiment at the batile of Han- over Court House, Va, in 1862. ree ie Mr. Cleveland Not saying Much. Ex-Presiient Cleveland was seen at Mr. Joseph Jefferson's home on Orange Isiand, La, yesterday, and in reply to a question as to how he regarded the action of the New York state democratic committee in fixing February 22 as the date for the convention, said: ‘I haveevery confidence in the commitiee's ability to trans- ‘act its business.” In reply to a question as to whether he would write a letter defining his bong ou matters political, Mr. Cleveland mid: “1 ——— many ne but 1 canBot what write im fature.* Mr. Cleveland will leave for home neat week.
