2 A THE EVENING STA y Ld Fd R: WASHINGTON. D.C.. THURSDAY. DECEMBER 17. 1891—TEN PAGES AMUSEMENTS. Axsaven's.—Last night Mr. Richard Mans- field delighted a large and distinguished sudience by his masterly impersonation of Baron Checrial in “A Parisian Romance.” The character is « repulsive one and this play bas not a healthy influence, but there can be no nestion as to the artistic work of Mr. Mans- id in resenting the oid French cynic and roue. Every detail of costume, make-up and stage business is carefully attended to and the death scone is thrilling in its rexlitic effect. This, according to dramatic harmony, should end the piay, but the last act js probably given to allow the triumph of virtue and goodness and to offset the abundance of vice that had Bone before. Tonight Mr. Mansfield will be geen for the first time in this city in his own play of “Don Juan.” The play is replete with delightful comedy scenes, ludicrous situations and is inuoceut in the extreme. A feature of the presentation a Spanish country dance in act 2, which is pa ticipated in by the nobility and ‘country folks of the raral districts of Sargossa. It will also resent for the first timo during Mr. Mans- eli’s season here the entire strength of his stock company, including sixteeu charming foung society ladies of New York, who have Toca Grough? on especially for this occasion, Tue Wintr-Garextcna Bexsit. — The benefit of sits. THE RAILROAD MEETINGS. ‘The annual mectings of what remains of the stockholders of two of what were once Alex- andria railroads were held here yesterday ernoon in the Midland office. ‘These compa- were the Virginia Midland, formerly the Orange and Alexandria Railroad Compauy, and the Washington and Ohio, formerly the Alex- andria, Loudoun and Hampshire Kuilroad Com- pany. They with the late Alexandria and Washington Railroad Company and Alexandria aud Fredericksburg railroad have dropped the word “Alexandria from their names Thean- nual meetings formerly took up two or three days and brought great throngs of stockholders with their wives and children to Alexandria, where they spent thousands @ollars in ‘the stores, shops and hotels. These annual meetings, held in the largest halis of the city, 700 stockholders being some- times present, were the great eveutsof the year, but “we have changed all that.” A few gen- tlemen in a smali room in Alexandria, repre- senting afew men ina small room in New York, hold, for the charter’s sake, annual meet- ings, two in an hour, andadjourn. ‘The direct- ors chosen this year comprise, however, a large number of Virginians and are as follows: Vir- ginia Midiand Kailroad Company, Messrs. Geo. Yarsons, John H. Inman, L. C. Moben and John McAuerney of New York and John 8. Barbour, Robert Portner, John W. Burke. E. 8. Reid, @. 8. P. Triplett, B. F. Mason, Jos. Wilmer, C. M. ‘The paucity of works of art in this country aa well as the slight public recognition ac- corded to historical study and research are, in Mr. Smith's opinion, matters worthy of con- fideration and defects that call for marked and immediate jmprovement. The contrast that ‘this countrf offers to those of Europe is any- thing but im our favor, and in opposition to the qrident tendencies toward Vhilistinist Br. Smith proposes the erection of buildings upon Gciupendoes cmle to ourpess in enchitecteral grankeur and extent all similar stractares, but, while monumental in effect, to be thoroughly practical and utilitarian as an educational in- stitation. According to Mr. Smith's idea, an outlino of which was publirhed in ‘Ime Sram some time ago, the ry is to be erected near the rive> front west of the monument grounds. In the center of the group is to be the commemo- rative temple or parthenon, one-half greater than the original at Athens, and surrounded by ranges of temples to commemorate the dis- covery and history of the United States. Then there are to be terraces, galleries ard cour‘s forthe purpose of delineating life and art through all theages. One of the most desirable features in such a national gallery should be spaciousness, and, according to Mr. Smith, Congress should be asked to appropriate for one of magnificent proportions, with broad ap- roaches, so spacious that there would be no k of room for centuries. Charts, represeuting such an institution as Mr. Smith would like to see at the capital, ‘Were presented with the address last evening, #s well as photograpus and drawings of works of art from other countries that offer such a contrast to the condition of affairs here. The charts and original desigus were by Mr. Ren- wick, the now veuerable architect of the Catholic Cathedral in New York and of the Smithsonian and Corcoran Gallery of Art in this city. Mr. Smith has published «sumptuous ‘tus of the plan fora national gallery illustrated with photographs of European gal- Jerics and with designs by Messrs. Kenwick, Aspinwall and iusell, who have aiso been Greatly interested in the plan. —_— Deny That He Was Intoxicated.
