South Carolina bas a new representative on the committee in the person of John C. Has- kell. whe takes the place of the late Mr. Daw- son. CHAIRAN BRICE. Chairman Brice is the same Senator Brice of Ohio, about whose piace of residence there has been some doubt. He did not seem a trifle worried this morning, however, over his un- certain geography, although Senator Hoar did add to the mystery yesterday in the Senate by accrediting him to Texas. He was cheerful and apparentiy well contented with the state of things, as be went around the room before the meeting, chatting with newcomers and discussing the results of last night's caucus in the House. He still wears his hair long at both ends of bis head and it is of that well-known auburn hue that has given him a distinct characteristic. He hurried away from the hotel as soon as the meeting was over in order to attend a caucux of the democratic Senators that had kept his colleagues, Gorman, Barbour, Ransou and Pasco away. FROMPT IN MEETING. ‘The commitice was prompt in meeting and it was just 11 o'clock when the members were shat inside of the parlor assigned to them and the portals were closed by Doorkeeper W. H. Wiggins. The “judge” isa familiar figure here and it was with ‘a thrill of recognition that most of the local politicians encountered him at the threshold. He was formeziy employed in the office of the journal clerk of the House. Mr. Jobn B. Trainer was chosen temporary sergeant-at-arme. The committee first went into the question of the vacancies on the committee, and decided to ask the various central commitees of the states now leit without representatives to name their choice of members, to be confirmed by the national committee at its meeting in January. ‘The date of this meeting was then considered. ‘The 2éd of February was first suggested, but it Was generally thought that that was too late a day and after the 28th of January had been put forward by a member as being a good date the committee d upon a day one week earlier —Thursday, the 21stof January. The commit- tee will meet at noon on that day at the Arling- ton. THE HOSPITALITIES OF WASHINGTON. Col. Wm. Dickson, the member of the na- tional committee from the District of Colum- bia, then appeared before the executive com- mittee by invitation and extended the hospi- talities of Washington for the sessions of the national committee in January. It was voted toask Col Dickson to consider himself ap- inted s committee of one to take chi of matter. He will probably ask some of his democratic colleagues here to aid him in pre- paring for the entertainment of the national committee. The committee adjourned as soon as this matier was settled. WHO WERE PRESENT. ‘The meeting was attended by the following: Hon. A. E. Stephenson of Ilinois as proxy for E. M. Phelps, J. J. Richardson of Iowa, Senator Carlisle as proxy for Henry Watterson of Ken- tucky, Arthur Sewall of Maine, D. J. Compau of Michigan ae proxy for O. M. Barnes, Gov. D. R. Francis of Missouri as proxy for John G. Prather, A. W. Sulloway of New Hampshire, Miles Koss of New Jersey, W. F. Sheehan of New York, C. 8. Brice of Ohio, James Kerr of Pennsylvania as the chairman of the state eom- mittee, BF. Looney of Tennessee, Hiram Atkins of Vermont aud John L. Mitchell of Wisconsin. The absentees unrepresented by proxies were Messra Estill, Tarpey, Paseo, Gorman, Kansom, Blair, Doran, Barbour and Clements. Mr. Estill sent'a letter of excuse. Mr. Prather of Missouri is in the city, but is so ill that Gov. Francis had to represent him. THE SECRETARY OF THE COMMITTER. ‘The secretary of the committee, Mr. S P. Seerin, is a townsman of the President, and be fs of the opinion that Indianapolis would do very nicely asa place for holding the national convention. He is an ex-editor and « courteous man. and bis istic and persoual tenden- cies bad hard time of it this morning with the several thousand questions that were thrust at him from all sides. He bore up bravely and smilingly, however. Hon. ‘Don M. Dickinson, ex-Postmaster General, attended the meeting as a spectator, ba the only person honored by this privi- eee Death of Capt. Hanna. Capt. B J. F. Hanna of Kansas died of dia- betes in this city at 12 o'clock midnight on the ‘th instant in the sixty-seventh year of his age. ‘The deceased leaves four children—two sons, Messrs. E. P. and B. W. Hanna of this city, and two daughters living in Kansas. Services by Rev. Dr. Bartlett will be held at the resi- dence of Mr. E. P. Hanna, No. 1924 H street northwest, at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, to whieh friends of the family are invited. Frank Williams, a rough looking man whose appearance indicated that he was a tramp, was ‘the first prisoner called before Judge Miller this morning. He was charged with being» thief and the testimony showed to the satisfac- tion of the court that he was guilty.
