THE PENSION OFFICE. ‘What Eepresentative Cooper Says About An- other Investigation. “If Commusioner of Pensions Raum retires within « month or soI do not think there will be any investigation of the pension office this Congress,” said Representative Cooper toa Stan reporter this afternoon. Representative Cooper was an anti-Raumman last winter and it has been asserted that he would continue to stir things ap during the coming session. “I went into the last investigation very un- willingly,” continued Mr. Cooper, “and was im- dy nothing but a sense of duty. Stont and Henry W. Lawton, who, during the years 1882 and 1883, made desert land and homestead entries of certain tracts of land in the Santa Fe, New Mexico, land district. One of the en- tries incinded the Nutriasspring, well known in that section. These entries were rejected by the commissioner of the general land office on the ground that the land sought to be ac- juired was within the Zuni Indian reservation. entrymen, however, contend that the ex- ecutive order creating the reservation was without authority of law, and that if the reser- vation: was created by competent authority the land in question is not within its borders. ‘The Secretary finds that the reservation is le- gally created and that the lands in dispute are within its proper boundaries. Two of these entrymen, Mewrs Lawton and Tucker, are army oficers, and this fact, the Secretary de- pkey ee them from making and pe jomnaatoad entry. ‘The commissioner's poo lpr ry ‘4 Mineral Land Decision. Assistant Secretary Chandler in the case of B.D. Patrick against Walenty Misgalski and others, involving a tract of land in the Duluth, Minn., district, said to be valuable for its min- eral,-bas affirmed the action of the commis- sioner of the general land office in overruling the motion to dismiss the appeal of the con- testant. The commissioner is directed to can- cel the entry on the ground that Leopold Moss, the transferee, was not a bona fide purchaser. Army Orders, First Lieut. George P. Ahern, twenty-fifth infantry, is detailed as professor of military science and tactics at the College of Montana, Deer Lodge, Mont., and will report in persoa for duty accordingly. Capt. Gustavus C. Doane, second cavalry, will report in person te Gen. Alexander McD. McCook, president ‘army retiring board at Los’ Angeles, ca for examination by the board, and ou the conclusion of his examination will return to his station. Leave of absence for two months, to take effect December 1 to 10, 1891, is granted t. Walter L. Pisk, corps of engineers. “Tao Tottowing cheese ia the wetion of off- cers of the medical ‘tment are ordered: First Lieut. In September last the secret service division received information from Bay City, Mich., of the sppearsnce of a new photographic counter- feit $5 note.on the First National Bank of Bay City, Mieh., which note had the silk threads, but was otherwise oaly a success. On bn pe 17 the same office received a photo- graphic counterfeit $20 gold certificate.” This flea had the silk threads running through it and was described as s dangerous note. Sin- gularly enough, this counterfeit also had been in Bay City, Mich. An A agent of the service was sent to the latter place and he has arrested two persons named Block—husband and wife—residents of Esscxville, a suburb of Bay City. They are the proprietors of a photo- graphic gallery and the woman is fully identi- ‘as the passer of the notes. The Squadron of Evolution. Acting Rear Admiral Johu G.
