The First Congregational Church Crowded to Overflowing Last Night. SECRETARY PUGn's INTERESTING REPOXT—nEV. DR. MACAKTHUR'S ELOQUENT ADDEESS—REV. ‘DR. GREENE'S PRACTICAL WAT OF PUTSIXNG TRINGS—THE DEBT CANCELED. ue If there had been more seats in the Congre- gational Church the audience that gathered there last evening would have been larger. After all the available space in the great au- ditorium had been occupied people stil! con- tinued to press in. It was s large crowd, but as it was the anniversary cclebration of the Young Men's Christian Association everybody wko came expected a big crowd. This is one of the features of these cecasions and last evening, although it was the tbirty-ninth suniversary, was no exception tothe rule. It is not quite certain that the earlier anniversaries excited the same degree of popular attention, but there is no doubt about the later ones, especially since the present energetic officers took charge. OX THE PLATFORM. The president, Mr. W. B. Gurley, was seated on the platform, together with those who were to take part in the program. As he glanced over the vea of faces he looked especially happy and jubileat, and this feeling was shared by all who are interested in this prosperous organi- zation. Some of tho pastors of city churches occupied venta on the platform. ‘The venerable Dr. Scott, the father of the wife of the Presi- dent, sat near the speaker of the evening. After an organ voluntary, played by Prof. Bischoff, the congregation sung in a spirited a bymn, and then Rev. Dr. Hamlin led in A’ hearty address of welcome was i m by Key. Dr. S. M. Pugh, the secretary of the association, was introduced with a tribute to his ability and earnestness on the of President Gurley that was so genuine as to elicit the approving applause of the audience. SECRETARY PUGH'S INTERESTING REPORT. Mr. Pugh is a modest man, but he came to W. BAKER & CO.S from which the excess of of! ro . the front and in his characteristic manner said 7s abeotutely pare ond | that he had condensed the history of the year in a ten-minute speech. No one looked to see whether Mr. Pugh really occupied only ten minutes, as he was through before they thought of looking at their watches. The re- twas a report of progress, and showed an Increase of from $3 to rcentin each de- partment. There had been enrolled 1,654 members during the year, while the highest total enrollment at one time was 1,233. ‘There are 500 young men and 75 boys who avail themselves of the advantages of the gymnasium and athletic park, the latter being added to ‘the attractions of the association during the past year without extra expense to those who avail themselves of it. Mr. Pugh spoke of the 428 young men who had attended the educa- tional classes, and said that the usefulness of this part of the work was limited by the size of the building, which bad become inadequate for the needs of the association. Beside the even- ing classes there had been twenty-four lectures ddlivered on practical and popular topics. The social side of young men was not ne- glected and reference was made to the recep- tions held during the year. Other features of the work, such as the reading room, the em- ployment’ bureau, the boarding house record aud the visitation of the sick had been main- tained with increasing efficiency. ‘The relig- ious phase of the work showed an encouraging progress, and the interest shown by the at- tendance at the various meetings continued unabated. Sixty-two young men professed conversion. In conclusion Mr. Pugh expressed the hope thata year hence may see a flag un- furled above as fine a building for the associa~ tion as in any other city of equal size and im- portance. BEY. DR. MACARTHUR'S ADDRESS. Mr. Pugh’s terse and interesting resume of what the association had been doing during the year was greeted with applause. Another hymn ‘was sung and then the speaker of the evening. the distinguished pulpit orator, Rev. R. 8. Mac- Arthur, D.D., of New York city, wasintroduced. For more than an hour Dr. MacArthur held the attention of the audience. He has a direct, clear style und at times is eloquent and at all times forcible and interesting. He spoke on the theme, “The Times We Have and the Men We Need.”’ He dwelt upon the great material prosperity of the present age throughout the world aad said that in this march of pri success the United States led the way. has wealth and population increased, butall the conveniences and luxuries of life. In the midst of this material advancement the speaker said that there was need of great progress in the churches and in such ussociations as the Young Men's Christian Association. He saji that the present always seemed in- significan’ as compared with the past, and men in the midst of making history were uncon- scious of that fact. He spoke of two brothers of his wife who were in the battle of Gettys- burg, and who did not realize until it was over that one of the great battles of the world was being fonght. ‘Tho speaker referred to the progress made in the spread of religious trath, and also to the great missionary cuterprises that were being carried on He saidsthat when Congress passed the anti-lottery law that body stood on @ higher moral ground than the church did a generation and # half ago when lotteries for elurches and colleges were encouraged and supported. BEY. DR. GREENE'S PRACTICAL REMARKS. ‘The popular pastor of Cavalry Baptist Church, Rev. 8. H. Greene, D.D., was down for # speech and the audience expected to hear, as usual, something good and interesting. This expec tation was not disappointed. But Dr. Greene's remarks took a very practical form. He said that he desired that the helpful words of Dr. MacArthur should take practical ehape at once. He then went on to speak of the debt of the as- sociation, which umounted to about £2,000, and be said thathe thought that there was that amount in the pockets of the audience. ‘TRE SUBSCRIPTIONS POUR IN. ‘The result proved that this assertion was cor- rect, and the subscriptions, starting in at 2100, continued until the total reached $2,100. On December 6 of last year acolored man, Emanuel Tapin, died from the result of stab with a knife at the hands of Thomas H. Heath, an aged colored man who lived on Ist street southwest. Tspin occupied » room in the house, and some dispute took place about Tapin using the gate and they struggled over an ax, but were parted, aud it wns alleged that Heath armed himsclf with and used the knifo. The old man was indicted for murder and tried in June last and convicted of man- slaughter on the 13th. Messrs. A. K. Browne and Joha Lyon were assigned to defend the old mun, and claimed that the blow was in velf defense, and during the trial took numerous exceptions to the rulings, on which the case—after a xentence of ten years in the peni- tentiary and fine of $1,000 was imposed—now comes ap. The first three exceptions are as to excusing certain jurors and accepting others. The fourth is as to the admission of Tayi dying declaration; the fifth as to the exclusion of certain testimony, und the sixth is as to lim- iting the time of counsel aud the charge of the court. Those were argued by Mevsrs. Browne and Lyon for the defendant and District Attor- ney Cole for the government, and the latter contended that the evidence fully justified the verdict and was ample to sustain a conviction of murder. a DENTISTS AT 4 BANQUET. A Pleasant Company Celebrate an Anniver- sary at the Shoreham. About thirty sets of excellent teeth worked for a couple of hours on an excellent banquet at the Shoreham last night. They were owned by the members of the Washington City Dental Society, who were celebrating tho eilver jubilee of that organization and eating their annual feast. The anniversary was marked by some special features, particularly by the presence of half a dozen charter members of the society, all of them dentiste in active practice. whoheld their own with their younger brethren through- out the evening, both in appetite, wit and science. They were Dra. Hunt, Donaldson, Dawee, Smythe, Noble and Wadsworth. The party sat down to the table in the hand- some new banquet hall on the second floor of the hotel at about 8 o'clock, but the courses @ not served at once, for Dr. L. C. F. Hugo had a few words to say beforehand. He had been aasigued us the essayist of the evening, and had chosen as his topic “Dental Deteriora- tion Among Civilized Peoples.” It was a scien- tific production, representing the latest thought of dentistry and giving the knights of the gold filling a philosophical review of the causes that have led to the gradual increase of their busi- ness through the carelessness of modern teeth owners. Among these causes he cited the chan iu the mode of living, the increased activity of existence, the disregard ot the laws of Lygiene and the growth of bad habits, Then the dentists sat down to the feast with an added zest, and it was nearly midnight when they arose. Dr. J. Hall Lewis, the president of the so- ciety, began the -speechmaking by delivering an annual address and he was followed by each of the pioneers, the half dozen ancients who helped to start ‘the organization. ‘They were all vory happy and the walls echoed with fre- quent dental applause. ee Michael Talty’s Will in Court. The case now on trial in Justice Montgom- ery's court (the Cirenit) is the trial of the issues as to the validity of the will of the late Michael Talty, who died October 6, 1890, leav- ing a large estate. It is alleged that the leaving of the larger portion of the estate to his daughter, Mrs. Mary A. Prince, was the result of undue i and, notwithstanding the provision that if any of the children should endeavor to break the will their share should be forfeited, some of bis sons filed a caveat against the pro- bate. On this issues were framed in the Pro- bate Court raising the question of testamentary capacity, undue influence or fraud. Judi Wilson and Mr. J. J. Darlington appear for the caventors and Mr. W. D. Secretary Rusk has been officially notified through the State Department that a number of shipments of American pork have been received at German ports unaccompanied by the proper inspection certificates issued by the Department of Agriculture. This pork had been accepted by some consular authority, but was, of course, very properly excluded by the German custom house authorities. The agree- ment between the United States and Germany is that no pork can be admitted into the Inter country which has not been inspected accord- ing to the regulations of the Department of Agriculture and which does not bear the stam and certificate of that department. All por! 80 inspected and bearing such stamp and cer- tificate is freely admitted; all other is rigidly excluded. —<$<<—<$——____— A petition urging President Harrison to ap- point M. M.
