THE EVENING STAR. {Jus THE EVENING STAR has a regular and permanent circulation in Washington y other paper local NEWS paper and Advertising Medium it has ne competi PE nnn Seem tat nine se Near the capital is the nation’s beantiful city of the dead. In it awaiting the last trump lie the bodies of many whose fame the republic will never let die. Other heroes are buried in different places throughout the land which they assisted to save. There is, in shame be it said, ‘8 disposition in some of these places to treat the sacred dead with neglect. The body of the great commander lies in the city of New York, without a monument and in the neigh- Dorhood of things not to be alluded to in the hearing of ears polite. There is no prospect that the people of New York will ever build the proposed monument. Immersed as they are in trade, including the trade of politics, the spirit is too gross and material to see a senti- mental duty, certainly too gross to arouse itself and perform that duty if seen. Else- where, buried under circumstances of outward respect, repose the dust of Sherman, of Thomas and of many others less distinguished but worthy of adequate and impcsing sepulture ‘where their late comrades and the world may read their lives in their epitaphs and be filled with the glory of their example. One of the duties that are intrusted by the American peo- ple to the Fifty-second Congress is that of pro- ‘viding for the removal of the body of General Grant to Arlington cemetery and the erection of @ noble monument to his memory which will speak the gratitude and admira- tion of all his countrymen. Connected with that imminent duty is another task no less sacred, if less urgent. Arlington isthe spot where, in the sight of the great offices of government and the river Washing- ‘ton loved, and not far from his tomb and nearer still to bis majestic monuments, the tall white shaft and the beautiful, ever-prospering capi- tal of the republic, the mortal part of the heroic comrades of Ulysses 8. Grant should lie. Let their countrymen and admirers from the ‘whole world come here as to the Mecca of lib- erty. Why should these heroes who fought to- gether and saved the Union together repose in isolation, where the lesson of their heroism is half lost on the generations as they arise? Tho cemetery at Arlington, the most beautiful and impressive of all national cemeteries, is the fitting place for the final sepulture of the na- tion's mighty dead. Arlington might well be made the republic's Westminster Abbey, where the great who have lived and died for their country, or who have by peaceful arts honored and blessed it, may be laid to rest in tion of @ national loss and as the final and crowning act of earthly fame. a Great interest is felt here and elsewhere in the deliberations today of the republican execu- tive committee respecting the place and time for holding the next national convention of the party. In the opinion of many politicians the choice of the place will have an important Dearing on the presidential election. The ‘western men claim that it is indispensable to hold the convention in the Mississippi or Mis- souri valley, as several states in that regionare uncomfortably close and the presence of so many enthusiastic republicans from all parts of the republic may stimulate the party to re- newed efforts and victory. ‘The reasons for ‘meeting in New York are deemed particularly strong by the eastern men who advance them. ‘New York, it is said, is not only better prepared to entertain the convention and the crowds that flock to it, but the effect ona doubtful state casting the greatest numbes of electoral votes cannot itself be doubtful. But the trend of feeling is now as heretofore. ‘The republican party looks to the west for the Principal part of its support, and this reason is strengthened now by the fear that states li Towa, Nebraska, Michigan, Minnesota and Wis- consin may break away unless carefully watched and assisted. The committee will not, itis pre- sumed, be moved at all by sentiment, but will in their decision be guided solely by what ap- Pears to them to be the welfare of the pari It is well enough to remark in addition that, whatever place may be selected, the choice will have littis if any reference to the fortunes of any particular candidate for the presidency. +s There is no reason why the vessels of the United States navy should bear foreign names. ‘There is every reason why they should be named in accordance with the law which prescribes that vessels of acertain class shall be named after the leading cities, capitals of the states, etc. The Raleigh was not ealled so be- cause it was the family name of an illustrious Englishman. If there had been provision under law for calling one of the best ships in the navy of this republic after the true founder of British American civilization, Sir Walter Raleigh, it would have been s graceful and fit- ting thing. But the provision in this case was covered by naming her in honor of the capital of one of “the old thirteen,” on the soil of which the preliminary engagements insuring the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown and the final independence of our eountry took place. If Raleigh isa foreigh name, as some have thought, the so-called secession of North Carolina was a fact and she ie still ins state of 's tribute to Parnell is noteworthy for its eloquence and also for its discretion. A tribute to “the uncrowned king” before his death might have been yaluable to some of the workers in Irish politics as well as embarrassing to Mr. Depew. ——+—____. ‘When republicans in discussing coming pres- dential candidates declare that they are for the administration they should be required to in dicate explicitly whether they have in mind the White House or the State Department, +> ‘The reports that her republican delegation to the next convention may be a little scattering ‘as to purpose is no reflection on Kentucky. She has never yet made any especial boast of that branch of polities. ___——_———— Senator Peffer and Congressman Simpson ‘might take advantage of the recent snow fall in Kansas to go out and leave (a few footprints Jast to see Low they will look on the sands of time. —— ‘New York's experience with the World’s Fair should warn her against expecting to secure the convention by calmly resting on a state- meus of superior fitness. er ——____. The only way to give universal satisfaction Will be to hold the convention on some the- sophie principle by which it cam be present in peveral cities at once. a One of the beautiful things developed by the tae cmreention te the sisterly affec- co-operation shown by St. Paul and Minneapolis. to Rudyard Kipling declares that his mother is the wittiest woman in India. Her son's style of expression would indicate his profound be- lief im the doctrine of heredity. —_- ‘The allegations among delegates that money is being used to influence the location of the convention are premature. This should not be confounded with an election. ————+-_____ One of the curious things developed by the Fivalry for convention honors is how a pho- tographer can make a two-story railway eating house look like a two-hundred-room hotel. ee Itis @ lonesome prominent politician who hasn't enjoyed the honor of mention for sec- ‘ond place on the ticket. (= ee Possibly the best way for New York to secure rain would be to organize a monster Sunday ‘ecbool picnic. Let us come right to the point. ‘We have leased the old Rink on New Yerk avenue between 13th and 14th sts., and propose to re- model it and transform it intoone of the largest and most conven!- ently arranged Furniture and Carpet Establishments in Amer- fea. Ever since we have been in our Present location we have been Painfully aware of the fact that ‘we have not had sufficient ground- floor space nor room on the upper floors to properly display our mammoth stock, it having been necessary for us to have ware houses for storing goods. In the Rink Just the reverse will be the case. We will have an abundance of ground floor space, and with the additional stories which we Propose to add we wiil then have Proper facilities for displaying our immense stock. In the Rink we shall also be abie to sell at lower prices from the fact that we shall be under considerably less expense. We shall give up allof our storage ware houses and otherwise scale expenses in handling, hauling, and by centering the force and saving other expenses incident to conducting business under such great disadvantages. Reduced prices will be the onler of the day. Everything in stock has not yet been reduced, BUT HUNDREDS OF ARTICLES HAVE BEEN—especially in Fur- aiture. We shall begin with the larrer Pieces of Furniture in onder to wet them out of the way first, thus making room for the other lines now in our ware houses, for the ware houses will be dispensed ‘with at the earliest possible mo- ment, thus bringing our entire ‘stock under one roof. From day to day we shall make additional reductions throushout the store, and you need not think because ‘we do not mention just the article you happen to want that it is not here at areduced price—forit is, Swerzoarps ‘These are ‘odd pieces, of which we have but one, and ina few cases two, of a kind.
