——_ sae. ’ THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C. A HANDSOME HOUSE WRECKED, Explosion of a Steam Heating Apparatus and the Damage It Cansed. ‘The steam beating apparatus in the residence of Capt. Davenport, 1319 18th street, exploded carly last evening. The lower portion of the house was badly wrecked, but none of the oc- cupants were injured. The force of the con- cussion was felt not only in the house, but in the neighborhood. The house is an English basement one and the furnace room occupics the frout portion of the basement floor, with a window opening on the street. At the side is the maiz entrance and the hallway, containing @ staircase leading to the upper floor. Extend- ing across the entire front of the house on the first floor is the parlor, and, as it is immediately above the furnace, the force of the explosion was practically expended in wrecking that room. The floor is raised up in the center several feet and split open. There are great cracks in the walls and in the ce ings, and the delicate ivory white of the dnish is stained by the steam. Separating the fur- nace room from the hall is a brick wall, now marked by a great gaping hole. The wooden ceiling of the hallis cracked and splitanda od crack a in the exterior wall of the jae fast above the basement window. ‘One of the singular features of the accident was the blowing out of the pane in the lower sash of the parior window over the ontrance, while the glase in the bay window remains in- tact. There was another remarkable feature observed in the condition of the door lealing into the kiteben in the rear of the house. ‘The headirg about the giass in the pee r tion of the door was torn off, while the glass not injured. "he heating apparatus was a combination of the hot water and indirect radiator systems. A jacket of water was placed about the fire chamber of the furnace and the cold air passed round this heated water and thence to the pipes that lead through the house. There were ‘also coils of hot air pipes over which the cold air passed and this was used to heat tho back part of the house. The apparatus was regarded as ideally perfect and is one of the most costly that is used for the heating of private houses. ‘The building inspector has been notified and an effort will be made to ascertain the cause of the accident. A great deal of sympathy is felt for Lieut. and Mrs. Davenport. They had just built the house and had furnisbed it in a ‘handsome style, and were looking forward to a winter to be spent in their own cozy home. Lieut. Davenport was one of the officers who escaped with his life at the time the hurricane drove ashore his vessel in the harbor of Samoa. ener slcsaien CAMPBELL ON POLITICS. MMEDIATELY — LADIES AND Obio last evening in the Fifth Avenue Hotel, where he arrived on Wednesday night. “What do you think of presidential possibil- ities for 1892?" I asked. “Well,” answered Mr. Campbell, “I can only speak concerning the situation in my state, Obio. There the democrats are divided iuto two factions, the larger being in favor of Grover Cleveland and the smaller being for Hill, Boies, Russell aad othcr less important candidates. “And Flower?” kuow nothing about his chances, but should say they depended entirely upon the way be administers his new oui tho is regarded as the favor candidate in Olio?" “Harrison, I think, although Blaine has per- haps a stronger following amoug the people. It is one thing, however, to be a popular hero and quite another to commune the votes of a natioual couventio: That I do not beiieve republican Mr. Bisine will ve able to do iu 1892. You see, the delegates must either renominate Harrison, according to the rep an second-term tradi- tion, or furnish the people with some plain and autisfactory reasous tur not doing so. MARLISC GInE w no one can deny that President Harri- administration has been honest and effi- cient and dishonesty or incapacity ave the two main in ents which count much against Fenominatic “As for Mr. Blaine, in spite of his immense personal popularity, 1 tuink bis chances of securing the nomination « i, probably not se good as tho: nley, whove name on the h ticket would draw out paign expenses where b sor Blaine's would draw out one. Every protected dustry would be bied to the uitermost, issue would be pot only protection against free trade, but dollars against dollars. If Presi- dent fiarrison is turned down for a: on im the convention 1 look upon MekKin! chances as excellent.” DEMOCRATS WILL SWEEP THE couNTRY. “And giter the.nomination whieh side do you thick will win?” “There cannot be avy shadow of doubt on that point. The democrats, led by Cleveland, Hill or anybody else, are going to sweep the country. Why, look at this last election in Ohio. “There never was an election when such assessments were levied upon the republicans in every state in the union. “The money came pouring in in torrents and every nerve was strained by repubiican man- agers to keep Obi ine. And yet they on succeeded in getting their normal maj: n few hundred votes more than Harrison got. That sort of concentrated effort will not be powsible next yeor, for there will be other states than Ohio trembling im the balance. Oh, I assure you, the opinion in my part of the coun- try is that the democrats will elect their Presi- dent in « canter.” Gov. Campbell, after a visit to New Haven, Will start for home next week. ONLY LOCAL TROUBLES. Senher Mendonca Not Alarmed by the Situa- i ton of Affairs in Brazil. “There can be nothing very alarming in the situation in Brazil,” said Minister Mendonca to the Washington correspondent of the New York Herald, “tor Uhave received nothing from my government for the pait three days. If any- thing important bad occurred they would cer- tainly have notified me. My private informa- tion from the minister of foreign affairs tallies exactly with that which he has given out for publication. “Iam satisfied that my government is con- eealing nothing from me. {I can also assure you that Iam withholding nothing. I see no Teason why the people of this country should not be kept fully informed of the real situation re. ‘What about the troubles in Rio Grande do “I don't attach any importance,” replied Senbor Mendonca, “to the statement that tive of the war vessels have been captured by the revolutionists. The vessels are of light draft and small. They are there for the protection of the revenue and to afford such other assixt- ance as they might be called upon to render along the boundary of the twocountries. “Their seizure by the revolutionists, or rather the dominant party there, hay nothing alarming in it. ‘They will not be used against the general government because there will be no trouble between the revolutionists and the government at Rio Janeiro.” ONLY 4 LOCAL STRUGGLE. “De you anticipate trouble in any of the other states except Rio Girande do Sul?” “All my information is to the effect that the internal disorders are confined exclusively to Rio Grande. The trouble there is purely local in itecharacter. It is a struggle between two of the contending forces as to which shall ad- tinister the affuirsof the state. I do uot think President Fonseca purposes interfering in the affair. In this I think that he is entirely wise. When the sgruggle is ended be will recognize the triumphant party, no matter which it may de, as representing the popular thought there. ‘Ido not doubt either,” Senhor Mendonca continued, “that when the next Brazilian con- gress meets the state of Kio Grande do Sul will send her representatives to it the same as the other states will. AsI tell you, the trouble is enti local and is not directed against the government.” SOME LUDICKOUS MISTAKES. mt on to explain how puzzling it was even to himself to rend the <8 HONEST RE: dot i government at Itaguahy. Seohor Mendonca explained that Itaguaby is a small piace not many miles trom Rio.
