4 THE EVENING STAR WASHINGTON: (ROSEY 8. NOYES. Editor. THE EVENING STAR bas Permanent circulation in Washington three fhmes larger than that of any other paper fm the city. Ae a local NEWS puper and Advertising Medium tt hus no competitor. ——— ee ‘The fact should not be overlooked that the abstract statements concerning Washington as ‘an educational center are rapidly taking a con- erete form. Both her public schools and pri- ‘vate institutions have developed into the first rank. For the higher education there are al- ready here two universities, the Columbian, which broadens the scope and increases the excellence of its work each year, and that vigor- ous educational infant, the Catholic University. ‘The Methodist University is rapidly taking shape and ina short time the fine site, which has been purchased by means of the contribu- tions of the residents of Washington, will present an active scene as the various buildings are erected. These universities may be re- garded asa pretty good basis for the claim of any city to be an educational center. But it is evident that this is only the beginning. The directors of the Lutheran Theological Semi- nary, now located at Gettysburg, have been considering for some time the plan of removing that institution to this city. The only obstacle in the way is the question of finances. They have a fine property now and it is not the in- tention to abandon it unless the money is avail- able to furnish equally as good accommoda- tions near this city. But still the change is among the possibilities. Then there is the Proposition to erect an Episcopal Cathedral here, which is intended to be the center of & system of schools. Bishop Paret is au earnest advocate of this idea, and when aman of hia indefatigable energy undertakes anything the chances are that it will be « success if it is within the bounds of human endeavor. As has been announced, a substantial nucleus of the cathedral fund has already been donated and Bishop Paret is looking around for @ suit- ablesite. It will not be surprising if sometiting is heard from Bishop Paret before long, and when he has succeeded the possibilities of the situation have by no means been exhausted. ‘There are other religious denominations yet to be heard from, the Presbyterians for example, and then it must be remembered that the scheme of @ National University to be located here is by no means abandoned. When such a shrewd and cool-headed judge of the practi- cability of » proposition as ex-Senator Edmunds thinks it of sufticient practical movement to ad- vocate in the Senate the founding of a National University at the capital, those who confidently expect the ultimate success of such an enter- prise and the final realization of George Washington's project are not to be dismissed ag visionary dreamers. += By the light of the official figures Tre Sran resumes its studies in breadstuff exports and their bearing on the crop failure in the old world. The total export of breadsiuffs for the month ending September 30, 1891, was $31,- 462,021; for the corresponding month of last year, $7,199,248. For the three months ending September 30, 1891, the export of breadstuffs 694,822; same period last year, £28,- 654,227. The item of wheat will afford the most marked contrast between the period of fall and short crops abroad. Thus it is seen that the September wheat_export of "91 was $20,388,490; of "90, $1,770,902. America ia already, therefore, aiding materially in supply- ing the deficit of cereals caused by the European and oriental crop failure. The ability of Europe to purchase will have very much to do with the continuance of the large exports that have characterized the past three months, In aay event there will be a considerable increase over last year's exports. oo ‘The reason assigned by the health office for declining to eonsider the proposition for a definite contract for removing the garbage for the remainder of the year may be sound, but no more should be paid by the District for the daily hire of each garbage cart than the amount for which such carta can be obtained under the proposed contract, or secured in the open market. The greatest economy compat- ible with the removal of the garbage will be necessary to enable the District to pay for this service for the remainder of the year, and as + 3 28 2; eirt 200, 200! t¥} Turive Juries wn] be 4 G a Or THE MOST ARTISTIC & FECTS IX FUR- NITURE, CAaR- PETS, WALL.
