4 THE EVENING STA WASHINGTON: TUESDAY... October 13, 1891. CROSBY 8. XOYES. Editor. ‘THE EVENING STAR bas a reqular and permanent circulation in Washington three times larger than that ef any other paper tm the city. As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Medium tt has ne competitor. ———— ‘The rise of Methodism fs one of the most im- pressive facts in the history of Christianity, a tnet accentuated by the assembling of the great world council of the Methodist communion in the capital of the hemisphere where Methodism hastaken deepest root. No eulogy of the Meth- odist movement is adequate which does not give large place to the men who used the sim- plest means to spread the light of Christian doctrine and the order and pattern of Christian energy through the waste places of this and other continents. Other churches have vital- ized principles; it is the iar claim of the ‘Methodists, one that is (pamlly. conceded to ‘them, that they have always male action the corner stone of their faith. In doing so the ‘actor in events has been thrown forward as he Ts Szrr_Dersssz aT a ll PERRY'S. ‘Weare growing to be an nmbrelis-carrying nation from sheer force of ctreumstances. The foul days out- number such an important share with the fair ones that it is hardiy sate to veuture out without an UM- BRELLA. No matter how many waterproof garments you have by you-ONE UMBRELLA is better than them all. Everybody likes consenial companions—eo don't carry an “‘eyesore”—something you would be ‘ashamed to raise if you should get caught in a ‘‘down- pour.” The relations between quality and price are “strained"—They stant wide apart in our stock. The ‘cost is 20 small and the satisfaction so great you can't want tobe without e creditable protector. Our line surely is. matchiess one We have bourht where we got an assurance of reliability. That is passed over to youthe moment you buy. You are insured, s0 to speak. Washinzton monument never looks so hi as when you stand at its base. An Umbrella grows in importance wien the need ‘s upon you. In view of the present weather—and the forecast of what may be expected—you could put a purchase of this kind into active service—and at once. We “expose” a few of the Jeaders and you will have uo trouble in filling yourde- sire, 24-inch GLORTA covering, with nat- Ural wood handies—90 cents. 26-inch GLORIA COVERING, with PrP. has been in no other religious movement of our times. Therefore to Methodists and to those ‘who would comprehend their system and work the circuit riders, in saddle or on the mountain path, are figures of transcendont interest. It matters not if the roughest of the toil for many laborers is over and Methodism now makes its liveliest appeais to the intellect rather than, aa in former days, to the emotions, much of the same energy, courage and fidelity characterize it as in the lifetime of Wesley, of Asbury, of Coke and the great preacher pioneers of the prairies and the southwest It is always mon energizing doctrine, illus- trating it with flery zeal, stoic endurance or melting tenderness. To admire the ardor, the heroism, the fortitude, the incessant pains and activity, the universal charity of the early Methodist ministry it is not necessary to oc- eupy a Methotlist standpoint. It is only im- portant to have a human heart and to look steadily at the facts. Much of the fine flavor of the pristine zeal remains, and it will do its part in the Christian education of the masses, in thepromotion of the social welfare and in the defense of the republic's life from any cause of evil and in any hour of peril from within or without. It may possibly be weil onough to dopart a little *occasionally from classical models, in the construction of some of our new public buildings, for the sake of varioty, as suggested the other day by Supervising Architect Ed- brooke to a representative of Tae Stan, in con- nection with our coming new city post office; but with the awful examples of the pension office and national museum buildings before us, weimploré him to go slow, and not very far away from the approved styles, that aro good, not for today, alone, but for all time. If architectural fancy must have play in the in- troduction of fantastic efforts, at least let it bo exercised and displayed some place outside of Washington, where the results, as in the in- stances named, are not only « bict on the land- scapo in themselves, but where they are also made to appear much the worse by contrast with better existing examples. Both in ma- terial and desiga the post office building should adorn the conspicuons position which it is to eccupy on the historic parade-strect of the re- public. If the stracturecannot be built of suitable materials and in accordance with a ‘ereditable plan to the height for which the law alls without an increased appropriation, then hile the work is in progress let that increase be granted. An eight-story brick barn on Pennsylvania avenue, either plain or fantastic ally decorated, would be a national discredit, the culmination of architectural sins at the capital ——++ + The value of the wind power which might be harnessed and utilized in the tracts of land needed for the park seems to have been wholly everlooked by the experts in giving their testi- mony as to the exhaustless and priceless re- sources and attractions of that locality. With large and strongly built wind mills stationed on every comisanding elevation, enough power could be utilized to drive any number of mills aud factories, and for this available motive force government ought,to be asked and surely should be willing to pay roundly. It is singu- Jar that so important @ basis for estimating values has not been vigorously pressed upon the attention of the commission by some of the imaginative and eloquent successors to Colonel Sellers who have appeared before them. ———_—— The rumor that Cardinal Gibbons has the best chance to be chosen pope on the death of Leo XIII is revived. The selection of this able and popular American prelate for the headship ef the Roman church would give general satis- faction in this country and wherever else he is well known. Having made a record here for broad patriotism, Cardinal Gibbons nas the public confidence and no member of the Roman hierarchy is more esteemed by the working masses. It is highly improbable, however, than any other nation than Italy will furnish the next pope. — +2 The recent wrecking of the U. S. Steamer Dispatch prompts an irreverent tax-payer to wonder why it never occurred to the naval board of inquiry which lately made a report on the subject of “stagnation in the navy” to suggest that teaching naval officers how to sail ships might possibly prove to be @ novel and Useful mental exercise, and tend to prevent “stagnation. ———+2——____ It is almost an axiom of human nature that the poetic and the business instincts are in- compatible. Since this is so it is easy to see how Ireland, the source of so much impetuons feoling, the birthplace of so much eloquence and song, should lack the practical qualities which might have enabled her to secure inde- pendence. It is the repetition in anation of the history of many a gifted individual. += __ ‘The Springfield Republican's idea of reform fs to vote for the man who is most favorable to ‘the reform nearest at hand. This means, as it explains, that Fassett, as the representative of Ballot reform, is to be preferred to Flower, the representative of tariff reform. This explane- tion pleases the tariff reformers lees than it does the ballot reformers. Stanley luck carried the explorer and his wife through even a railway wreck. But it was im Italy and not America and he was not com- polled to brave the perils of « car stove. Uruguay nipped an incipient rebellion in the bud yesterday. The old parties in the United States are trying to nip ar. able-bodied rebellion 6f the farmers in full bloom. With the reports of starvation in neighbor- ing Russia Germany finds the grain feature of the reciprocity negotiations with this country of particular importance. The element of Iscmane interest which is always prosent to tome extent inan international transaction is especially prominent in this one. suger for American grain Germany officially inquires how to cook the vaunted johnny cake. Linens have been one of the strongest features of our store since we opened our doors for business. We have always kept a large and weli-assorted stock, pay- ing particular attention to styie of pattern, as well as quality, andso much taste and judicment has been displayed in tho selection of our Table Linens, Towels, Napkins, &c., &c., that our Linens are well known in hundreds of ho-nes and lias made for us in this line of goods a reputation Which we justly feel proud of. The Linen Departmen: has heretofore been on the first floor, but its business has so increased that ft was necessary to find for it larger and more commodious quarters, that the beautiful goods which are.always found on this counter might be displayed to ad- vantage. Consequently the second floor was opened that they might be accommodated, and with them our magnificent stock of Blankets, Comforts and Quilts. Wehavegiven nearly the entire side of the second floor to our Linen stock and it makes just the beautiful display that these goods do when properly kept. One thing very essential to the display of Linens, as weil as the customers’ satisfaction in seeing while pur chasing, is light. and we claim justly no store in the county can produce a better light for their patrons to purchase in than we have for them on our second floor. We continually heer tho expression: “Oh! whata lovely light." Notice the light at our opening. In giving this line of goods more room and further increasing te smount of stock it was necessary to put it under she management of some experienced linen yan—one who thoroughly understands makes, ‘qualities and vaiues—so that we may always bave on sale the latest style in Linens and’ the best values. Such aman wo found in Mr. J. H. Austin, who for eleven years was manager ana buyer of the linen de- partment of the Boston Dry Goods store of this city.
