A Pretty Schoolina‘'am Bitien, but Her Life Was Saved by Her Wickedest Pupil. Ruth McDougal, the prettiest schoolma’am | in Hartford county, Conn., lies on x little cot {| at her Burnside home—her cheeks pallid. great dark circles under her eyes, and an ugly green- ish-yeliow spot on her right forearm, says the New York Sun. She passed through a very unpleasant experience Friday. She was bit- ten by a rattlesnake, then made very drunk on whisky and earried to her home in aepringless wood wagon. Miss McDougal is blue eyed and nineteen, and began teaching the young people who attend the ‘Cotton- wood district” school in the village of Burn- side, five miles from Hartford, on September 2 last, when the fall term was begun. Her father was killed on the New York and New England road a year ago, and since that time she has been endeavoring to support her widowed mother. Friday morning, while the dew was yet on the grass, Miss McDougul started from her home to walk to the school house, nearly two miles away. Her journey led through the Burnside woods. While passing through this miniature forest she espied some late fail wild flowers growing about twenty fect from the pathside. Miss McDougal loves flowers and she started to gather the blossoms, think- ing to place them in the belt that spanned her slender waist. Before doing #0, however, she placed her little lunch basket beside an old tree. This lunch basket, which has for a fasten- ing a dilapidated wicker clasp, contained two boiled eggs, a cruller or two, sume cold meat, a 10 bits and three errors aud the vanquished one hit and three errors. Hatfield and MeLaughiin contributed the others evenly. Foreman gave two bases on balls, hit one paper of suit and bread and butter. The pretty schoolma’am gathered the flowers, placed them in her belt, picked up her lunch basket and continued her journey to school. The morning session being over she seated herself at her desk and prepared to eat Ler luncheon. There were several small boys in the room, who remained indoors to their luncheon also. The Experiments Recently Tried at 1 Paso Did Not Suceced. So faras El Paso and its ncighborhood is concerned the rain-making experiments by the recent government party failed to prodace a single drop of rain. Tho barometer was high when the firing began on Friday, and it was |. even higher Saturday morning. The relative humidity was very small and grew less and jess all day. Every one was disappointed, and none more so than the members of the government expe- dition. They do not believe, however, that the theory is wrong, but that the conditions for making rain were too unfavorable for even old Jupiter Plivins himsclt to wring out a drop. But if it did not rain in El Paso it certainly did rain to the cast, south and north of the city. Heavy rains feil Saturday morning in Chibua- hua and Demung. About a hundred miles to the east the rain fell in torrents. ‘The meteorological experts claim that some of these rains were undoubtedly caused by the heavy explosions at El Paso. But of course it is impossible to know whether this is so or not. ‘The gentlemen who are from the country near Corpus Christi said that the fact that 10 rain fell at El Paso did not at all shake their faith in the theory, and they would give the vain- making expedition a rousing welcome this week when they went to sonthern ‘Texas. An effort may been made, Tux Stam learns, tochange the location of the horticultural building at the world’s Columbian exposition toa pluce where the building, or at least the central portion, may remain as a permanent conservatory after the close of the great expo- sition, The large island in the lagoon has been suggested as an excellent permanent site, and the building could be placed there without necessarily destroying all the trees. The main part of the building could be erected asa per- maneucy aud the wingsand annexes so built that they could be readily removed after the close of the fair, without in any way injuring ! the areb:tectural effect of the main part. In the meantime the teacher had regained her senses, but she was drunk. Today she is sober, and the physician thinks that, owing to Willie’ prompt measures, she will live. ‘The snake, probably attracted by the smell of cold meat or boiled eggs, evidently entered her lunch basket while sue was picking wild flowers.
