President T. B. Coulter of the association in- troduced the speakers. In his introdectory remarks he thanked the association and its friends for their presence in such inclement weather. Their presence on such a night was characteristic of Ohio people. Ohio republi- cans were not afraid of a little wet weather at the beginning of a campaign. If Secretary Rusk had been at home he had no doubt that the bad weather would have been postponed. The excursion was a new feature of the asso- ciation, and in giving it he thongh it a proper sway of opening the Ohio campaign at the Wash- ington end, inasmuch as only a few days ago Maj. McKinley had opened his end of it so loriously in Ohio. Besides this, here in Wash- ington, where his achievements have been ac- complished, where he has legislated for the Je, it seemed but proper that some notice Thould’ be minde of it. Le referred to. the mans parties in the field in Ohio and the many platforms, and said he doubted himself if the ‘Voter had yet got through reading them. He speke of the cemocratic party as the party of opposition and said the republicans expected to meet it on that glan. He interspersed his carpets on his floor and enjoy in some degree the luxuries of life Now, my friends, if I don’t stop pretty soon I will be making a speech. I will say that this is one of the reasons with me why I favor a protective policy, because it gives to the labor- ing man of this country that compensation that enables him to be financially independent. I don’t know what would become of this country if our laboring men were brought down to the condition that they are in most of the countries of Europe. A YEAR OF THE M'KINLEY BILL. Now my friends the McKinley bill has had a year's trial. I think I can say to-night and to my democratic friends, that this one year's ex- perience has vindicated that bill. I challenge my demoeratie friends to-night to name one thing that has advanced in price in-conse- quence of the McKinley bill. ‘They said last year when I was a candidate. I was met every- Where with the statement, that the prices of goods were going You remember that in McKinley's district they sent out peddlers who sold their wares at higher prices, and blamed the Mckinley bill for the price of tin. Thus far Miss Hardin of Baltimore holds the palm for the highest score, making 196 in eight boxes. Whist is also indulged in, Miss Noble of New Orleans being the best’ lady player. Mr. Joseph Rice of Alexandria, who has been pass- ing several weeks here, is also an excellent whist player. SOME HIGH-BRED HORSES. Fauquier‘county is famous for its fine horses, and there are several breeding farms in the vi- cinity of Warrenton. Probably the most noted is that of Mr. R. W. Neilson, whose breeding stock is renowned. Mr. Neilson owns ‘*Circas- sian,” which he purchased from Wiitiam Waldort Astor when that gentleman sold his racing stock. A recent sale of fine yearlings by Mr. Neilson was made to certain reliable New York parties and good results are expected irom them. Mr.Samuel captain of his local camp. The state central committee of the people's party of Massachusetts met at Boston yeuter- day, George F. Washburn presiding. A thorough state organization was effected and it was determined to puta state ticket in the fiefd this autumn. After an extended debate a piat- form was adopted which indorses the action of the conference held at Cincinnati in May last; demands that United States treasury notes be issued in suiticient volume to transact the busi- ness of the country on a cash basis, such notes to be a legal tender and to be kept at par by being increased or decreased in volume in pro- portion to the population and the average mar- et price of a given number of commodities favors the establishment of postal savings banks; demands the enactment of laws which will prevent tax dodgingand favors a graduated The case was heard by two magistrates, and the court room was crowded, some disorderly scenes occurring during the examination.
