Showers Prevent a Large Attendance, but the Services Are Interesting. Correspondence of The Evening Star. Wasmtxatox Gaove, August 18, 1891. Monday, though not a blue one, was s quiet, restful, soulful time in camp. Few visitors ‘came and the sojournors here fairly lux uriated in the calm peace aud fellowship of this place. Tho forenoon services of the tabernacle were but slimly attended. Rev. A.J. Bender gavo a touching sermon on the “Bow of Promise, and at 3 p.m. Rey. Ezekinl Richardson preached on “Jesus” ina way that was very effective. This servico was better attended than in the morning. The singing was especially sweet, under the conduct of Mrs. J. Mickle, with Mrs. Offutt at the organ and Prof. Glea J. Poole cornetist. Rey. G. Wilbur Shipley of Tenleytown spoke to the children at 2 o'clock and the little folks spenta delightful hour in song and quotations from Scripture and interesting addresses. The young people's evening service was large and earnest. A change was deemed expedient and today and hereafter this service will be held in the auditorium nt 6:30 p.m. Rev. Robert Moore of the Montgomery cir- cuit, though physically weak, was strong in mind and spirit while he offered salvation to a full congregation at night. Dr. Elliott followed in an earnest exhortation and the people wore mightily uplifted. Dr. W. 8. Edwards will fll the desi at 10:30 a.m. today, Dr. M. F. B. Rice at 3 p.m. and Dr. E. 8. Todd of Hamlin at 7:50 p-m. A goodly band of visitors were counted upon for today, but tho gentle showers, long Pr , are ‘making sweet music on the foliage, not enough to mar our serenity, but sufticient to keep the day visitors at home. ‘Thursday promises to be a high day in cam| The ladies’ missionary eocieties’ wil! render a choice program during the day and at 6 o'clock a special train will leave the Buitimore and Ohio depot, Washington, for this place with an or- ganized band of Christian workers, league and as many others as lect to come ‘along. The trained choir and party will meet the league special and escort the visitors to the auditor- ium. Mrs. La Fetra spent yesterday in the Grove and was heartily received. She will return to this place on Thursday. Dr. and Mrs. Bovee are expected home today FELL OVER A MILE ‘The escape from instant death of Prof. Samuel A. King of Philadelphia and Mr. and Mra. Sher- man Hunt, who accompanied the seronaut on bis balloon voyage from Manhattan Beach,Col., on Sunday, ae briefly described in yesterday's Stan, is considcred almost miracle. It was nearly 6 o'clock when Sherman Hunt and Mrs. Mary Jobnston of Arvarda, who had deter- mined to make their wedding trip by balloon, appeared in tho inclosure near the tossing gas bags, The words that made them manand wife were pronounced by Justice Talbot and the couple announced themselves ready for the voy- age. Prof. King stepped into the basket, fol- lowed by the newly wedded couplo, and a mo- ment later the balioon shot upward. No ballast nor anchor was taken, in order to give the ship greater buoyancy. The people cheered and shouted as the air ship arose higher and higher. Big black clouds covered the sky and the lightning flashed and flickered. The bride waved her handkerchief and kissed her band to the multitude below until her form became indistinct. Suddenly the larger of the two balloons attached to the basket peared to grow small. It had, in tact, burst, and immediately afterward the basket, when at an altitude of ono and a half miles above the ground, began descending at fright- ful speed. A groan of horror went up from the crowd ‘as the descent of the balloons became faster each minute. They soon disappeared from view and the people returned to their homes impressed with tho belief that the voyagers had been dashed to pieces. ‘The balloonists, how- ever, were very much alive. When the rapid ent began the professor told them they would get to the ground without being killed, but to do everything possiblo to ease the shock. He knew it would be a tremendous one, and directed them to get astride the basket and cling to the ropes. “This they did, and be did likewise, dropping at ® territlc rate of speed, faster than the balloonist ever traveled before. Down the balloon dropped until it struck the ound with s tremendous. crash near Fort ogan. Everything was dark, and the occu- punts of the basket, or rather the throe astride Of its sides, were scattered peil mell over th rancess. FE LL. Serrecrua® @" WORTH A GUINEA A BOX.
