Mrs. Harrison, Vice President Morton and several membere of the cabinet will be with Gen. Alger is also ex- pected to arrive on the 18tu, The celebration promises to excel any previous Vermont effort. ‘The fourteenth state in the United States will into the Union at Bennington on the 19th, when the monument commemorating the battle of Ben- nington will also be dedicated. It was only after a struggle of twenty-six years that Ver- mont sneceeded in *o firraly establishing her | independence that Congress was compelled to vote her admission as the first state received after the formation of the Union. This struggie, a remarkable one from any point of view and one which has never been paralleled in the history of this country, was the principal reason that there were not four- teen original states instead of but thirteen. It is also conceded that if the Vermont men had not intrenched themselves in their mountains and resolutely whipped everybody who tried to seize it from them there would have been no state. On account of New York's attempt to seize their territory they regarded New York | | as even a greater tyrant than England, but they had no intention of submitting to either. Finally, after the actual stressof war was ended, Vermout found that he had no reason to urge admission to the Union. The Union | appeared to be but temporary aud the states | were laboring under a hopeless debt. Vermont | free; she owed allegiance to no one: she | Was uniueumbered by debt aud growing in wealth and population. And so for eight year its people turned their atteution to their own fiuire. A minor coimage was established and a mint was set up. Postal routes and a post of- fice department were organized and Vermont became thoroughly established. The internal disputes over land boundaries were a source of trouble to the authorities, but they carried out the policy that seemed most likely to be just and the people had to abide by it. New York finally Lecame disposed to favor Vermont's entrance to the Union, owing to the need of eastern representation in Congress, and a determined effort wax mde to settle the old ditkculties, Commissioners were accordingly appointed by both siztes, who agrved that un the payment by Vermont of 630.000 to New York to reimburse claimants under grants from the latter state New York would withdraw all claim to VermontJands and consent to her ad- mission to the Union. Vermont agreed to this. The money was col- cted and brought to Rutland, and the house stil stands where the indemnity was taken to be paid to New York. ‘Then the United States, February 15, 1791, passed an act declaring ‘the new state of Vermont,” shall be admitted into their union as 4 new an entire member of the United States of America.” So Vermont's delegates took their seats in Congress, and the state started on the century of progress which closed this year. The 5,000 persons present guve the beautiful mare a warm greeting and gencrous support in the betting ring, sending her to the post the warmest of favorites. Barnes waited until the final quarter of a mile with her, and then tak- ing the lead won hundily, Riley second and Raceland third. ‘The feature of the day's sport, outee of Firenzi’s victory, was Hamilton's stupid riding of Kingston in the Orange stakes, that usually earefui jockey pulling the favorite up at the old finish, thus enabling Littlefield to go on and win with Territier Firenzi was a great favorite for the Champion stakes, opening at even money and receding to three to five at the post. As they made the turn for the run past the south field Hamilton shot through aud beat Firenzi for the rail, Barnes muking no effort to keep him trom obtaining that advantage. Kiley Was still in front, but as they neared the home- stretch both Riley and Kaccliud were under resaure, while Firenzi was going handily, with Karnes sitting on her like a statue. “two to one Firenzi wins,” shouted an e cited onlooker, and the words had scarcely passed his lips when the bonny mare strode to the front. “Yes, and Raceland beats Riley,” eried an- other man, as the old gelding moved up and collared Ed. Corrigan’s bulldog and headed him for a moment. Covington gave Kiley three or four savage cuts with his whip, and tue four-year-old tackled the old gelding ‘in at fight for second place. Firenzi had the race secure and Barnes, turning in his saddk watened the battle between Riley and Rac tmud. Raceland could never quite overhaul Kiley again and the three passed the wire necks apart. Firenzi’s mouth was open and she couid have wou a way off. From naw on the queen will give any Horse on the turf» race at aw mile and a half. “It was a genuine pleasure to ree her sail ulong, with hee incomparabie ac- tion, and beat such horses as Kiley and Race- fund 40 cleverly. KINGSTON BEATEN. ‘The Orange stakes will long be remembered by M. F. Dwyer, owner of Kingston, one of the greatest race horses this country has ever seen; Jockey Himilton, who rode the brown horse, and by thoee whe put up €1,000 to win #100 or $100 ‘to €10 on Kingston. ‘There were but three starters for the stakes, Kingston, Lerritier aud Annie, the latter being put im at the eleventh hour. Kingston was favorite, of course, 10 to 1 on being the prevailing quota- tion ail over the ring, while it wa» 15 to 1 against Territier and almost any odds against Auni ‘Jerrifier was the pacemaker and surprised everybody by giving Kingston quite an argu- ment in the homestretch, where Hamilton moved off with the favorite. Hamilton kept the brown nose under an easy pull after getting his head and neck in front and titteen or twenty yards from the old finishing line Littlefield stopped riding Torritier. ‘his gave Hamilton the impression that the finish was at the regu- Jar stand instead of a furlong below, gud when the pair had the regular line Hamilton lowered his head und dropped his bands on Kingston's shoulders. ‘Ihe favorite stopped very quickly, and Wyndham Waiden, who trains for the Messrs, Morris, shouted to ‘Littletieid, “Go on, Fred.” ‘The boy dug his heols into ‘Terfifier's sides, and betore Hamilton could realize what was up the three-year-old wasa length away. ‘Then it all ashed across his befuddied brain and the words “tinivh here” on the screen a furlong away looked as big asa house. He sat dow: and’ got Kingston guing aguim, but failed to get up in time, Terrifier winuing by a short neck. When the spectators saw Hamilton pull up they were dumb with surprise, but when it was clear that the brown horve wus beaten the air secure comfort, and has succeeded | + FOR RENT—HOUSES. _ 6 KENT Sr ea a WANTED—HELP.
