4 >= THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON D. oc: tHUESDAY, atcist 6180. THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: FAURSDAY THE EVENING STAR bas a reawlar and permanent circulation in Washington three times larger than that of any other paper im the city. As a lecal Advertising Medium it has no competitor. — Washington won. The encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic for 1892 will be held at the national capital. The Detroit en- campment has done the right thing. To Wash- ington, now it is done, it matters not that the choice was made by # small majority after an animated effort. The result is perbaps all the more gratifying on that account. It is gratifying on every account. It is grati- tying to the Grand Army and the families and friends of ite members, who will have bere something worthy their coming to seo, and ac- eommodations befitting the cecasion. It is gratifying to the general public for the same reasons. It is gratifying to the people of ‘Washington for these and other reasons. Wash- ington is prepared toentertain and always glad to entertain, especially to entertain national Dodies associated with the history of the coun- try and the aspirations of the people. It is justly proud of its patriotic pre-eminence, of ft» grand public buildings, its unrivaled situation, its nearness to the great Battlefields of three wars, its associations with stirring events of civil and military history and the illustrious mgn of the nation. Washington ‘will carry out its pledges next year and will contribute to make the session for 1892 of the famous body of veterans, the most memorable f all ite eucampments. It is not likely that ever again will any encampment in numbers, enthusiasm, personnel and local advantages be eqnal to it’ Time passes and the veterans are passing into the eternal silence. For the able and zealous efforts of the com- ittee and military delegation all possible praise is to berendered. With all Washington's manifest advantages over other places the re- sult would have been different but for the ex- cellent work done by the Washingtonians. Not the least meritorious portion of their la- bors was their sagacity in keeping cool when their city wax wrongfully taunted. It is all over 5 ‘They have the victory. There is no bitterness toward the young and sprightly rival in the west, and she is most cordially in- vited to take a front seat in the entertainment. | I: hardly necessary for Sram to refer to the purt it bas taken in the work of securing the encampment meeting for Washington, for it is known toeverybody. Tu Stan bas con- tributed freely financially, given its space un- stintedly, and devoted all the energies and capacitics of the paper, to the taek, and has the mtistaction now of feeling that its untiring work bas sided effectively in accomplishing the happy result. -_—~— + For years the ides has been mooted at the sonth of reducing the area of cotton in order to increase the price of the staple and enable the planters to produce their own cereals and other crops. As there has been no concert df the proposition has not taken any Practical shape. Now, however, that the Farmers’ Alliance has the matter ander con- sideratiot. it is likely that something will be done. The disposition of the alliance is to take WS paper and A EE id aie BES POPULAR SHOPPING PLACE, 77H STREET. It is significant, however, that the 700,000 English trade anion- ists propose to abstain, although some indi- Vidual qecieties may have representatives. —— Beyond bis cightieth mile post, Mr.Gladstone is represented to be ready for the great task his country .s about to impose upon him again— the task of directing her interests as prime mini He is the most marvelous instance, m our times, at least, of over-mastering qualities ununpaired by time and broadening by exercise to the verge of the final years of human hfe. A great soul tinds its repose in the imcrease of its activities for good to man. ee Alliance Congressman Watson is “after” Mh Crisp's <peakership boom. It is one of the principles of the alliance to be unremittingly “after” -omebody of something, just to keep its band in if for nothing else. The announcement by the People’s Party of Ohio that it proposes to relegate John Sher- mau to the oblivion that is enjoyed by his friend Ingalls is by no means as terrible as they seem to believe. The Ingalls variety of oblivion is one of the least reliable in the mar- ket. It continues only as long as Mr. Ingalls chooses to keep from expressing his opinions on any public topic whatsoever. oo About every other Farmers’ Alliance branch suntry has gone in for denunciation of ivarty movement. The democratic leaders should see to it that this sort of ching be done with discretion. A third party is the Jeading issue of their campaiga and they must have it ‘o insure success.
