But the English farme=s' estimates are from 8 to 10 per cent below average, with decreased acreage. Reports indicate a considerable reduction in the grain crops of France, Prussia, Austria- ‘Hangary, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, Holland, Scandiuavia, Syria, Persia, ‘but in Asia Minor the crops are wzusially fine pad much of it will be exported, while Egypt aod Tunis are likely to export as usual. amine Jnay eecur in Morocco and Algiers on account of the locusts. Much the larger part of the sudden deadly encounters that take place in this country are caused by the habit of carrying ‘weapons. ‘The laws usually provide the machin- ery for the suppression of homicide, but public sentiment is stronger than the laws and suc- cessfully defies them. What is wanted is a regulative public opinion which frowns upon the practice of carrying weapons upon the person. Rarely is it necessary to employ weapons in self-defense, and the exception only proves the vale of the general rule which the law creates and which society ought heartily to sanction. In the unfortunate affair between Baker and Anderson both had carried pistols for some time in anticipation of trouble. ——_-e—____ A reporter for the Chicago News says that a Chinese baby born at the legutior in this coun- meaning “Beautiful American.” It is a journalistic failing, quite too common, to give the public credit for more knowledge than it really possesses. This often leads a writer to omit the narration of much that would be really interesting. The informa- tion that “Mea” means “Beautiful America does little more than to whet the curiosity as to how any language. however compact, is going to express beautiful American in three letters and two syllables (assuming that the Yowels are pronounced separately). If “me” stands for beautiful and “a” for American, it is time for us to break off diplomatic relations with the Chinese until they see fit to accord us a better literary representation. Allowing “me” or even the whole word to stand for American, the recognition is scant. A serious responsibility rests between the Chinese gov- ernment and the reporte — see Good crops this year will diminish the force ofthe “demands” made by the Farmers’ Alli- ance. But whatever is right in the movement, — that is, whatever is wrong in the political sys- tem, ought to be clearly set forth, the right es- tablished and the wrong remedied, by means that are compatible with reason and our frame of government. Ihe farmer is always an im- portant member of the body politic, but he is not always as important as he should be. He ought not to minimize that importance by giv- ing less thought to public questions than they deserve. or thinking alone of his own interest im the government. For this is a great repnb- lic and no one interest can exctade ell others. ‘The best way to reform the vices of the system is not to perpetnate them, merely changing the temporary beneticiaries. -- — While our commerce with foreign nations shows @ gratifying increase, an increase not wholly satisfactory appears in the immigration figures for the last tiseal yerr. So far as this increment to our population is on the lines of conservative assimilation it is not an anwel-| come fact. But the increase is chieftv from | Russia, Italy and Austria-Hungary, and it is | probable that erable part of the 555.496 | immagran te are altogether undesisable as grafts | on the na epidermis, - ee Interviews with nearly every member of the Georgia legislature would seem to show that sentiment in that state fs at present adverse to the third party. Ouly nine members of the hoase aud two members of the senate favor that organization. This, after all, may be a Bror Rabbit stratege as immortalized by the Georgia humorist, for next to “sugin’ nothin’ ” is saying something that way mean something else next year.
