OFTictAL, RECOGNITION IN MEXICO. Coming neurer home, it is announced that Mexican women wil! receive official recognition | from Mexico's world's fair commission; aud this, in view of the country’s extreme conservati«m and of the almost orie: ions of the privileges of its wor of the most striking and extraordinary incidents trane- 4 during the absence of the presi- dent, Sut that alruady uuder way steadily and swiftly progresses. The first step in all those states which have made world's fair appropria tions was toward securing recognition of the ludy managers—who are national commission- ers—upon the state commirsions. Every de- vice known to woman in guining a point was broaght to bear upon this, and it is scarcely necess'rr to say withsuccess in the majority 0: eases. Indeed they can be suid to have entirely failed in only one instenee, since New Jersey's governor is the exception on record as | ving a jecided refusal. All the states which ave organized their commissions have not thus far appointed women commissioners, but | nearly alj of them havegiven encouragement that | they will ultimately du so. California, for ex- ample, ix now considering a petition for state recogniticn from her lady managers. Nebraska has positively promised it when her commis- sion shall Le organized. Missouri will undoubt- edly give women a-place and New Hampshire is favorably contemplating it. “These states are ‘among the twenty-nine in which appropriation: have been made. but in others where world fair amsocintions have been formed the work is correspondingly active. Fi nine hive already been mentioned and reports are yet awaited from Idaho, Delaware, Mon- tena and North Dakot: TLLINom’ LIBERALITY. Mlinois has been maguiticent in her liberality, giving women not only « large representation of eight members upon the state commission, but has made a special appropriation of 230,- 000 for their separate use, placing 10 per cent Of the state appropriation at their absolute dis- . ‘The state board convenes in August and the woman's work will at once begin. No other state has made a special appropria- tion for this purpose, but Indiana has been in all other respects as ‘generous in official recog- nition of women as Illinois. They are mem- Bers of five out of the seven committees, and two ladies —Mrs. Meredith and Mrs. Worley— are upon the executive committee, which is, of course, the most important. Indiana was the first state to organize the state coumission, and the advanced stage of world's fair matters fn the state is owing chiefly to the ixtluence ‘aud per-onal effort of Mrs. Virginia Meredith, vice chairman of the executive committee of ‘the bourd of lady managers. A carefuily pared pumphiet has been issued by the state Commuseion. Colored comes close after, and has also given women » place on her state board. In add these ludy commissioners are permitted the Piivilege of putting two additional women is to canvass the state in the inter the board, and a third to colle flora; excl of whom is to be paid . salary of $100 's month by the state. The la 1 selected to canvons the state entere? upo a their duties in Jane. and will continue the wors until autumn. Early if May the lady managers of Colorado sent out an eloquent appeal to the women of the state. ‘The letter mid: “We ask from those who are Interested suggestions as to the best method of showing to others what we can co, and are doing. as bread winners and workers in this ‘new west. WOMEX OF THE SOUTH RALLYING. The iwty managers of Alabama also have issued a circular letter, rallying the women of the south, althongh the state has made noappro- tion. A state association, however, has formed, with a committee of thirteen mposel of one from each district and four for the state at large.
