The five days’ festival of the turn vereins of the Atlantic coast began in Brooklyn on Satur- day evening. During Friday ni; Saturday the visiting delegations aud turn vereins arrived and were received by the Will iamsburg society. Despite the rain, there was a parade Saturday night, in which 5,000 mem- bers of the organization participated, and there were at least 40,000 spectators, ‘The socicties that took part were from Wash- ington, Boston, New York, Brooklyn, Jersey City, Trenton, New Haven, Philadelphia, Ba , Aubarn, Troy, Buffalo and Hartford. Fireworks were all along the line of march and numerous buildings were hand- somely decorated, ‘The Turn Hull wax crowded after the procession and the Arion and other mennerchors sang several “Lieds.” ‘The Roche, the fest president, made u few remarks, after which Mayor Chapin addressed the assem blage im German and English and presented to the turners the freedom of Brooklyn, Fest Oratory Schoening delivered the last formal speech and referred to the loyalty of the turners to America: institntions. The exercises ay of the festi- val were held yesterday at Ridgewood Park and were attended by fully 25,000 persons, So great was the gathering that many were anable to get into the park. Despite the tremendous crowd the day closed without accident. AtY o'clock in the morning the py bouts of the turner contests began. The xocie- ties from New York, Brooklyi, Boston. Phila delphia, Baltimore. Newark, Bnifalo, Syracuse, Albuuy, Trenton, Harttord, New Haven aud all | the large cities and towns along the Atlaatie coast, in classes of groups, competed in culis- thenic exercises. These were coutinued, so- ciety by society, until the exercises, some of them of au extremely technicul character, were complete. At 8 o'clock the turners and their friends liminary the store twice before and had made a few purchases, so that every attention was paid them. While the woman was examining some rings the man walked about the store and finally went out for # cigar. He returned in five minutes, and the woman, who liad decided to make no purchuse, went out with him. The tray of diamonds wax imwediately missed, and Warnicke remembered that the mun’s overcoat bulged at the breast when he went out for his cigar. The couple had said their name was Deford, but this was found to be false, and detectives ‘traced them into the Hotel Metropole, where the man had been liv- ing with two women under the name of Howell. Before they could make an arrest the partics cleared out, and it was not until Priday night that they came upon Howe in Broadway. He answored the description of the thief and they took him in. He was remanded to the custody of Inspector Byrnes, and now the detectives are looking for the woman in the case. a — WILL FREYCINET KESIGN?
