THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C. THURSDAY, JULY 16. 1891. AWAITING HIS FATE. ‘Thornton Hains Ready for His Trial for Mur- dering Hix Friend. LIFE IX THE wamrTox 547 LYNCHING—Aa xEGRO's JAIL. PRISONERS — pt A CONTINTAXCE L—A CANDIDATE FoR CRIME—CONCERT BY VLINE OF THE PRISON— BE ASKED FoR. Special Correspondence of The Evening Star. Fort Moxnox, Jniy 15, 1991. ‘Vhe trial of young Hains, which, if nothing Intervenes to prevent, will commence at Hamp- ton tomorrow morning, promises to be a canse ceiebre in this part of the country, and when one takes into consideration the character and standing of the lawsers who have Leen retained on the two sides it is easy to vnvlerstand that the trial will be a hard-fought one. The term of court that begins tomorrow, with Judge G. M. Peek of Hampton on the bench, wil! witness the debut of Mr. Edgar E. Montague as com- monwealth’s attorney. Mr. Montague is quite a fine-looking young man and his friends in Hampton, as well as on this side of the bridge that divides this government reservation from the mainland, are quite confident that he will do good work if the two most important caves on the docket come to tris! It ixsemething of an ordeal for the new prosecuting attorney that be should enter nponatonce to conduct two Of the most sensational enses that this nsually quiet and law-abiding corner of the earth has Known in many a day. \ r Wags HAINS IX JAIL. ‘The caso that ix of the most widespread interest is of course the Hains trial. which oceu- ies the first place on the docket for the July Term. Both of the principals in the shooti affair in the boat that took place mon! were so well known here as well as in Washing- ton that it will bea longtime before the interest taken in the tragic occurrence dies out. No matter what the outcome of tomorrow's trial may be there will be lot of people who will think it is all right and lots who will think it is all wrong. CANDIDATE TOR LYNCHING. Only less interesting. from a local standpoint. than the Hains case is the case of a young colored man who is now in the Hampton jail awaiting trial on the charge of criminally assaulting a white woman about three weeks ago. The man, whose name is Kobert Jordan, is an ignorant young fellow, who told Tar Stax correspondent this morning that he was only sixteen years of age, though he looks much older. ‘The charge is that he assaulted a ‘woman. the wife of a farmer living about three miles back from Hampton. Her husband was absent at the time at a Farmers’ Alliance mect- ing, but returned home in time to capture bis wife's assailant and keep him a prisoner until he was taken in custody by the authorities and lodged in the Hampton jail. LOOKING DOWN A GUN BARREL. For over two hours Jofdan was kept in dur- ance viie in front of a double-barrel shotgun Joaded up with buckshot. The gun was in the farmer's hand and the only thing that saved Jordan from a hanging by the neighbors before this seems to be the fact that the farmer him- self did not discharge both barrels when he bad the chance. This leniency on his part does not sppear to have met with very general avproval. RODERT JORDAN. However. mless the straws around hereare all Diowing against the wind there is trouble brew- ing. Rumors have been flying around Hamptoa all day, and generally credited too, that the clans are gathering for the fray, to the number of several hundred, and people who are in a posi- tion to know something about it may they would not be surprised if Mr. Jordan were taken out and strung up. Tonight is given as the time for the party. The matter is being kept tas possible, but the Sra corre- sponlent, who was around the jail all the fore- on. soon learned that something ont of the ordinary was looked Young Hains was moved from the ceil on the second floor to a room adjoining the jailor’s apartment where he would be away from the possible scene of trouble Other preparations were being m il building is only © The small two-story brick puiliing. strong enough, inside in, but nothing like strong en number of determined invades li appearances today the resistant keep 1 that will be offered, should any trouble occur to- night, will not be of a serious nature. There are at the jail only Sheriff Curtis ‘Mr. Mil- ler. the jailor, and the police force of Hampton. while strong and courazeous individually, is by WHAT HE LOOKS LIKE. Jordan himself seems to be in ignorance of any trouble that may be impending. He stayed rather aloof from the other prisoners today Miller now fills as the result of the recent local ENTHUSIASTIC ALLIANCE RALLY. election was even more liberal in his treatment of his most prominent prisoner. And it is said that the jailor's course in the matter was fixed as election ammunition to help bring about his COMMONWEALTH ATTORNEY MONTAGUE. downfall as an office holder. Hains says that on numerons occasions when his jailor wanted | to take a little siesta he would entrust the keys to him so that in case any one came who had a hight to comm inside the, jail he anight admit him. He had been outside the jail fence any nutuber of times and often of evenings after sunset he sits ont on the well curb in the yard of the court house and enjoys the cool salt breezes. Life has not been made unduly hard for him, but hecomplains that the confinement has been very wearing on his heaith, used ax he has always been to an outdoor life and plenty of exercise. TO ASK FOR A CONTINUANCE. There is searcely any doubt now that when the case is called tomorrow morning the de- fense will ask for a continuance and that Hains be admitted to bail on the ground of his physi- cal condition. They will assert that he is troubled with dysentery, that he is enfeebled and that his physical condition is such as to unfit him just now for the strain that must en- sue from a rigid cross-examination. ‘The opinion has prevailed in Hampton that Attorney Montague had a pretty large contract on his hands in conducting the ease with such a strong array of counsel opposed to Lim. This was the reason given why the defense were will- ing to go on with the case, expecially as it was learned that Senator Voorhees, who it was thought would be on hand to conduct the pros- ectttion, could not be here just now. Since then the prosecution has been strongly rein- forced by the arrival of Mr. Andrew A. Lips comb, and Judge Tom Nelson of Indiana is to be here in the morning. On the other hanc, if the case is postponed until the fall term it 15 A. A. Lirscoam. probable that Senator Vorhees, who is under- stood to be greatly interested in the case, will be on hand asa prosecuting attorney. From all this it can rendily be seen that there are any number of conflicting elements ir: the eae and 0 man ean even gness with any assurance of success what tomorrow may bring ferth. SCENE AT THE JAIL. When Tue Stan's representatives called at the jail today the scene: within the walla were of @ very curious natare. With one exception Hains is the only white prisoner and the rest of the score or more, “temporarily out of sigh were for the most part in for petty offenses. During the day they are not confined to their cells, but are allowed the freedom ef the build- ing and spend their time in grateful idleness. ‘Their number was largely increased by the ad- dition of a lot of young colored women of more or less repute, who were committed yesterday by the mayor of Hampton because they did not have the requisite £4.50 with which to. pay the fines thelf course of life had brought upon em. AJAIL CosceR! Hains was alone in a down stairs room sit- ting by the open window when Tue Stan meg came in and, after chatting pleasantly for while, he suggested that perhaps a little music from the other prisoners would be a novelty. It was. A big colored man, with a bass voice im proportion, led the band’ and the female contingent came in strong on the chorus. Jailor Miller says that before his advent the prisoners used to sing songs that were not nice. but that he had introduced the singing of hymns. If that beso then his charges must have objected to hymna on a Wednesday or else this new batch of prisoners had not had time to receive instruction from their keeper as yet. Their voiees were good, the harmony was excellent, but the songs were more than Zolaesque in ‘their realism. They were rank. ‘Twenty-five cents, divided up among the crowd, satisfied al! their present ambitions. Taking it all in all. and remembering the life young Hains has always led, his surroundirge at Hampton are incongruous. Ve ae Robbed a Priest's Stable. Rev. Father Mackin’s stable was robbed of some harness recently and Policeman Stear- man recovered the stolen property frém a col- d man named John Briela. John’s state- ment was that he purchased the harness from acolored boy named Henry Wynne and the latter was arrested. When the case was tried in the Police Court today Briel testified that Wynne wanted to sell him the harness for 4, and he finally gave him £1.50 for it. Henry admitted that he was present when the sale of the harness to Briels wax made, but he claimed that he only went there with two ‘Uther boys whom he met with the aarness. The boys, he said, asked him where they could sell the harness’ and he directed them to but when he found that Tue Sran’s special artist Was within the sacred precinets of bis prison house and was anxious to make a sketch of kim he rose np and posed with the utmost good gra While his picture was being made luet prisoners stood around with wid open eyes and every sign of the deepest in- terest. “Yes, dut's Jordan,” “Say, Jordan, he got you dat time sho’, were some of the remarks that were dropped. MAINS Fix. The general feeling seems to be that if there is any trouble tonight it would Le a first-rate ebance for Tony Hains to make a bold dash for Liberty under cover of the night and in the confusion that would naturally ensue. The | truth of the matter, however, is that Hains has Rot evinced the slightest desire to escape. From the time that he suled his canoe ashore with the dead body of his frie at Hanne- gan. lying im the bottom and gave himself up to the authorities at the post le bas acted with a coclness ands atargue either that he does not care what tcome of the trial may be Or that he is honestly contilent that it will be Am acquittal, ise fa the Hampton jail is nothing iik prevails in Warden Bur ke as strict as "* jurisdiction over You can havesix months in jail,” said the judge to Wynne, “and Briels ought’ to go with you for buying the harness.” ae Liberals and Home Rule. Earl Spencer, formerly lord lieutenant of Ireland, in a specch which he delivered at Ryston, Eng., yesterday, declared that the policy of the liberals in favor of home rule for ircland was at present stronger than ever. The ery of the conservatives that home rule wa dead is utterly false. It was a living principle and aa popular in English constituencies w as before disaster overtook the Parnel- lites. He declared that home rule would be the first proposal to be introdued in the next Liberal parliament. —s00 = Could Bury Him in a Soap Box. The Southern Leaders Willing to Join the Third Party if Necessary. ‘There was an entbnsiastie rally of Farmers’ Alliance men at Atlanta, Ga., yesterday on the Picdmont exposition grounds. Mayor Hemphill welcomed the multitude to Atlanta in an address which was enthusiastic- ally received. Col. L. PF. Livingstone, presi- dent of the Georgia alliance and Congressman from the Atlanta distriet, presided. ‘The first speaker was Gen. J. B. Weaver of Towa, who decisred in beginning that the alliance movement was greater than the re- publican party, the democratic party, or the people’s party, because it was the people. He was asked what his polities were and his reply was: “Fifty cents a bushel for corn and 5 contsaglass for lager beer. My politica is business.” He said it was high time for farm- ers to mako polities their business. “I am a follower of ‘Thomas Jefferson,” continued the speaker. “I worship at Lis shrine, politically. When he said eternal vigilance was the price of liberty he did not mean the vigilance of poli- ticians, but the vigilance of the people.” “I feel,” said the general, “that the time bas come when we don’t care a bauble nor {Applause.) We know what we want and we ave going to have it. If the old parties get in our way, why we'll run right square over them. There won't be as much left of them as there was of the republi- can party in Kansas last fall.” Continuing, Gen. Weaver uttered some sig- nificant words when he exelaimed: “I tell you, my friends, the industrial people of this country annot afford to lose another presidential election. [Wild applause.} We must meet the capitalists of this country in the open ficld and we must conquer them. Iiweare kept foranother five years under their laws now 1 operation we shall be the veriest slaves to alot of pluto- crates. Col. L. L. Polk, president of the alliance, began by saying he believed, and he know, before God, that the farmers’ had just cause for complaint. They had at last awakened to the fact that thoy had been for years systematic- ally deceived by designing "politicians and demagogues. ‘Turning to Gen. Weaver, Col. Polk exclaimed: “Now, general, go home and tell your boys ‘that our’ boys who woro the gray and faced them midst the blazes of battle, have joined | hande with them to help them strike the shackles from the arm: of fifty millions industrial people.” — (Voices from the crowd, ‘We'll do it, we'll do it."} In the midst of the enthusiasm Gen. Weaver advanced to Col. Polk with outstretched palm: “We are with you, colonel, heart and soul. At this the large audience literally went wild. Kegarding a third party President Polk said: “If there is a third party inaugurated in the south it will be due tothe dominating, proserip- tive and intolerant spirit of the so-called demo- cratic leaders. I have been a consistent demo- crat since the war and now I don’t want to in- terfere with party lines, but I have just this to say: We want justico and we are going to have justice. If we can't get it as true alliance men we won't hesitate to wipe the old parties out of existence no more than we will hesitate to wave cur hands. If the third party is established it will be nothing but the blind work of the ol parties.” Hon. Jerry Simpson was introduced next and was cordially received. A year ago on the 5th of Angust, he suid, he niade his tirst speech in Kansas, “Fame and notoriety have,” said he, Leen given me by the other fellows. Born of ridicule, the same spirit that hus actuated the enemies of reform in every age. “the moneyed class said, ‘Why, there is Jerry Simpson, come up from the furmers, a ignorant farmer, he doa’t even wear socks. Sam W. Small, who followed Air. A Solitary Miner's Unique Way of Ending His Life. ‘The tragedy of a solitary miner, in a remote part of Sierra Nevada, was revealed a few days ago, when the sheriff of Fresuo county, search ing for two murderers, discovered the body of a man imbedded ina grave of ice. ‘The sheriff's party found some miners’ tools in an almost inaccessible eanyon, and after searching about suddenly came upon a dead man lying at the bottom of a rude grave with six fact of ice over him. He had evidently cut the grave in solid granite. This done, it seems he lay down in the grave, placed a large rock his thighs and drowned himself, as the Grave slowly filled With water from little streams Shich the melting snow sent into it, ‘Although midsummer, yet the grave was filled with ice that had not yet melted this year. ‘The ive was transparent, and the dead mau in the bovtom of the grave was plainly visible, the body being as well preverved as if he had died but yosterday, though there can belittle doubt he committed suicide tast fall. ‘Near by they found this note, written with lead pencil: “My name is Dave Mencar, I have ifved like « devil. 1 will die like « man and be dud like a devil.
