THE TWENTY-FIFTH NEW YORK CAVALRY AGAIN VISIT THE BATTLEFIELD OF FORT STEVENS— DETAILS OF THE ENGAGEMENT TOLD BY SOME OF THE SURVIVORS OF THAT BRAVE COMMAND. “There is where we started from.” “Yea, and Ritchie, the first man hit, fell about bere.” ‘The gallant survivors of the twenty-fifth New York cavalry regiment made a pilgrimage to- day to the scene of the magnificent fight which they made at Fort Stevens, near Brightwood, on July 11, 1864. For nearly ail of the me: was the first visit to the tield since that memor- able day when the twenty-fifth stood a fragile but stardy barrier between Jubal Early and the capital city. The work of picking out the severai points of the field was an iaterestirig one, and the veterans entered into it with en- thusiaxm. ‘The site of the old fort and the sur- rounding ground was thoroughly scoured and ‘a sorrowful visit made to the neat little bury- ing ground on the 7th siveet road, where» number of the twenty-flth lie in’ peaceful sleep. Out 7th strect to Fort Stevens we went on the trot. At Fort Stevens the most prominent feature was the whizzing of rebel sharpshooters’ bullets and the angular form of Abraham Lincoln. ‘The defenders at the fort consisted of one hun- dred-day men and clerks. It was about 12 o'clock when we moved out of the earthworks, dismounted. We formed a skirmish line and deployed down through the slashed tim- ber, ‘receiving and returning the fire of the rebel sharpehooters. Pretty oon we struck a rebel skirmish line and the fun began. About 2 o'clock in the afternoon I was wounded in the arm, but put a compress on {t and stuck it out. I told the boys around if they were captured to say they were the skirmish line of the sixth corps, which was believed, and it seems that Early did take ui i longing to the PRESIDENT LINCOLN WATCHED THE MOVEWENTS. “During the afternoon I fainted twice and at length was compelled to ge to the rear. We passed close by President Lincoln and he stopped us and told us to take good care of that poor fellow.” THEY SAVED TRE NATIONAL CAPITAL. Capt. 8. E. Chamberlin of Savannah, the vice president of the association, is an inter- ting figure at the reunion. Said Capt. Chamberlin: “If any one could find out what especial deed they would have performed during the war andoubtedly the choice would have been to bave saved the capital. This deed the twenty-fifth New York cavalry cer- tainly performed. The sixth corps did not reach Washington on fight i t was lit- figh until the 13th of Jul He more than providential that ‘the event oc- curred as it did. The twenty-fifth regiment left City Point on the 7th day of July, went by transport to Baltimore reaching there on the 9th. ‘The regiment, although it knew nothing of it, lay ip Baltimore while the tight at Monoc- acy was going on. On the afternoon of the 10th we were hurried on to Warhington. We reached Fort Stevens early in the morning of the 11th and found some volunteers there exchanging shots with the rebel sharpchooters, who were cltse up on the earthworks. Abovt noon the order was given to move out and dislodge the sharpshooters, | The regiment deployed and moved down the ill. ‘The effect of this mov ment can be gathered from Gen.
