An unusually quiet Fourth of July was expe- rienced this year, although no effort was made on the patt of the police to suppress the use of ordinary fireworks. During the day the mem- | bers of the fire department were called out, but there was not a single fire that did much dam- age. There was not the usual Fourth of July murder and there were not any serious assaults, Maj. Moore is the official who is given credit for the quietness of the day and the good be- havior of the criminal classes as well as for the small number of fires and the slight damage to property, and it was the result, so it is claimed, of the permission of the police to set off fireworks and have a good time generally, so long as they did not overstep proper bounds. During Saturday and Sunday nearly 200 ar- rests were made, but many of them were for | offenses of @ trifling character and not for crime of a more serious nature. SEVESTY-SEVEN IN THE DOCK. This morning there were seventy-seven prisoners in the dock of the Police Court as well as a large number of coliateral cases. Many of the victims were old time vagrants, who are picked up at regular intervals, and many others were locked up as “drunks” and were released when sober. When Judge Kimball took his seat this morn- ing there wasa long procession of prisoners marching upstairs to the court, and in the lead * “Tom” Bowie of resurrectionist fame. “Tom” is « colored man, and his white stove- pipe hat attracted general attention. “Jack” Brookings, another colored man, was n the procession. He was accused of being a “He works for me,” was the testimony of Al Corbin, a well digger, “and I pays him $1.25 a day on top and lay on the bottom.” “Does he ever work on the bottom? “Yes, sir, but only recently. The men are afraid to go in the bottom and I have to inch them down.” THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON. D.C. MONDAY. JULY 6, 1891. THE ITATA AT SAN DIEGO. Brought Back to the Port From Which She Kecaped. The Chilian transport Itata and the United States cruiser Charieston arrived at San Diego, Cal., at 90 Saturday morning direct from Iquique. The Itata entered the harbor and anchored in the ‘channel, while the Charleston remained outside the Head. The Itata was at once boarded by revenue officers. At 10 o'clock the Itata reached the identical anchorage from which she eloped 40 sensationally some weeks ago with the United States marshal on board. The wharves were soon crowded with people, all anxions to get a look at the vessel, and the bay was dotted in every direction with sailing craft of all descriptions. As soon as possible Officer Churchill, in charge of the vessel, went ashore and telegraphed his report tothe de- partment at Washington. ‘The Itata came in fiying the Chilian fing and covered with bunting in Konor of the day, and carrying as officers and crew the same men who manned her when she left so suddenly, the exception of Silva Pulma, commander of the Esmeralda, and two or three of the offi- cers who assisted the Itata to get out on her last visit. There is no prize crew, the Charles- ton having simply put an officer on board and convoyed her up, a navigation to the original crew under Military Commander To- Jede and Capt. Mauzeat : The Itata’s machinery, which was said to have been purposely damaged by the insur- gents, is Geckar to have worked admirably until the last two or three days of the journey. Arrangements were immediately made to turn the vessel over to the proper United States authorities. The Charleston, it was understood, would remain outside until ‘today to engage in et practice. and would tien come into the harbor. While lying at her anchorage about a mile west of the Coronada, the Charleston was visited by hundreds of people in steam tu; and sailing vessels, and train loads of peopl have come in from Los Angeles, San Ber. nardino and intermediate points to see the two vessels. H. M. 8. Warspite arrived at Victoria, B. yesterday for duty in Chilian waters and will into dry dock for repairs. Her officers say the stories — to North America = the Letra ment of jie were greatly exaggerated. Newikenarearees tee esac Killed at the outside. No women or children were among the number, but two squares of the city were burned or destroved. ‘They also state that the Itata landed 2,000 cases of arms and was not tention when the Warspite left. ‘The declare that the reports of all the en- gagements have been greatly exaggerated. <—————— THE NATIONAL SNGERFEST. Newark Has the Largest of Any Yet Held in This Country. ‘The Sengerfest being held at Newark, N. J., is undoubtedly the best and greatest Swenger- fest ever held in this country—greatest in point of numbers and best in completeness of arrangements, freedom from accidents or an- noyarees and in having perfect weather. The city was given up to the Germans yester- day. The front doors of saloons in the city were wide open andextra bar keepers were engaged to serve the thirsty throng. Beer flowed more freely than it ever did before on a Newark Sabbath, and yet there was little drunkenness and no afrests of Germans. All day long the main streets of the city were thronged, and every train entering Newark de ‘ited from 600 to 1,000 strangers. The walks were uncomfortably crowded in the afternoon and almost every face was set in t! direction of the singing parks, ae to 6 s'elock. in the anne more than ,000 persons rough the park gates, and 45,000 of these paid 25 cents cach for ad- mission. The others wore the yellow ribbons of the Sengerbund, or were entitled to free admission for other reasons. Inside the gates during the afternoon the throng was so great that people could not move about freely. ‘The auditorium and stage of the Music Hall ‘held nearly 10.000 persons in the afternoon, and there was room for 2,000 more, but the prize singing did not attract the throng as would a general concert. ‘There were big delegations trom New York, Brooklyn, Philadeiphia and Baltimore.
