The finance committee reported that there had been some difficulty as to thé time when the bond of the collector for the southern district was tendered to the committee. The charter required the bond to be given within fi teen days after the election and all the other offi cers had given bond within that time except the collector of the southern district, and his bond when offered was not deemed sufficient by the committee. The council referred the matter back to the finance committee with instruc- tions to allow the collector to strengthen his bond, and if it should be made satisfactory to them 'to take it at any time before the 1st of July and then deliver the bills to him for col- lection. After the application of Mr. Brawner for payment of a lost coupon had been granted and J. Details of the bloody riot at Woo-Hoo, China, on May 12, a brief account of which was sent by cable and appeared in Tay: Stanat the time, are given in the North China Datly News, copies of which were brought by the steamer Gaelic, which arrived yesterday at San Fran- cisco. It was known for several days before the riot that a mob of Chinese were threatening to loot the property of the Jesuits at Woo-Hoo. The mob spirit was aroused by the circulation of reports that the Jesuit priests had killed many children and used their eyes for making medicine. It is not known who {s responsible for the circulation of these stories. ‘Ihey were readily believed, however, by ignorant Chinamen, and it was resolved to ran out the Jesuits. The attack was made on the afternoon of Tuesday May 12. A mob numbering several hundred Surrounded the Jesuit mission house. They broke through the walls, drove out the priests, pillaged the palace and set fire to the cathedral and other buildings. private fire alarm system which it is proposed to establish here. ————— NEWS FROM ROCKVILLE, A Runaway Which Might Have Proved Se- rious—Some General Notes. Correspondence of The Evening Sta Rockvitzz, June 24, 1891. ‘The dramatic entertainment given at the town hall last night by a number of the ladies and gentlemen of this place was attended by a full and fashionable audience. The prepara- tions for this event have been in progress for some time and nothing was left undone to make it a success in every particular. The ad- mirable taste displayed in the appointments and decorations of the stage and hall elicited the warm commendation of all present. The manner in which the different characters in the selections were rendered showed careful training and exbibited rare talent, and the su- perb toilets of the ladios were much com- mended. The first pieces entitled “The Mouse Trap,"'a farce in one act, by W. D. Howells, was put on the stage with the following cast: "Mrs. Somers (a young widow engaged to Willi Campbell), Mrs. Robert E. Bradley; Mrs. Curwen, Mrs. Nelson; Mrs. Bemis, Miss Mary Hodges; Mrs. Miller, Miss Bartlett; Mrs. Agnes Roher's, Mira. A. J. Almoney: Jane (a servant), Miss Mason; Willis Campteil, Mr. A. J. Almonev. The second piece, entitled “A Box of Mon- keys,” a comedy in’ two acts by Grace L. Fur- nis, had the following cast: E”board Ralston (a young American and half owner of the Sierra gold mine). Mr. W. W. Russell: Channeey Ogle- thrope (Kaistow's partner and second ‘son of Lord Doneaster), Mr. Arthur Peter: Mrs. Ondeqo-Jhones (an admirer of rank), Mrs. A. J Almoney: Sierra Bengaiine (her niece, a prairie rose), Mrs. Nelton: Lady Guwienerere Llond- yoore (an English Primrose, daughter of the Earl of Paynanght), Miss Mason. At the close of the entertainment the wish was universal that at no distant day the ladies and gentlemen who had acquitted themselves in such @ handsome manner would again give the audience the pleasure of such a happy evening. Wesley Smith, a colored man employed as a laborer on the new court house building, was yesterday stricken with paralysis while at work. ‘He was removed to his home and now lies in a precarious condition. Last night about 9 o'clock @ horse attached to a wagon, in which were Mrs. Jaa. Case of the neighborhood of Trarilah and four children, became frightened near the fair grounds and throwing out the occupants of the wagon and breaking it to pieces. Workmen had been engaged during the day in removing the stone from the pike and piling them on the side of the roudand in the darkness the horse was driven into this pile of stone, causing him torunaway. In the upsetting of the wagon the occupants luckily feil upon the soft clay and were not apparently very badly injured. In the smash-up of the wagon the horse was badly injured. ‘The family was placed in a car- riage and sent to their home. 8. A.M. peewee sme WILL THEY RACE AT MONMOUTH? Long Branch is Considerably Interested in the Question. A Long Branch special, dated yesterday, says: There is an immense amount of uncer- tainty here as to whether there will be racing at Monmouth Park this year. While awaiting the decision of the last court, which is expected daily, itis now generally believed that the managers of the Monmouth Park Association have reconsidered their determination to abandon racing here this year, and that the regular season at the famous course will be in- augurated on Saturday, July 4. ‘This morning Superintendent Van Keurin put an entire force of over 100 men at work at various points on the track, and every- thing is being put in apple-pie order. The men set to work some two months ago to grade and improve the grounds about the stables have compléted their labors, and are now en- ed in completing the new three-quarter- mile track outside of the main inclosure of the association. This track will be devoted exclu- mvely to the exercising of yearlings. Other gangs of men are cleaning up the debris around the grounds, and relaying and widening the walks leading to the main entrance to the grand stand. Senator Blodgett, superintendent of the New York and Long Branch Company, still maintains his customary reticence on the sub- ject, and positively refusce to say that there will or will not be racing this year. At the same time Mr. Blodgett’s men are fixing up the rail- road tracks leading to the park. Several per- sons closely identified with Peter DeLacey's fight against the tracks say that Monmouth Park will fill itsown days at itsown track. That the ofticials of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company are certain that there will be racing st Monmouth is shown by the fact that they have refused to arrange for an excursion from Freehold on July 11 next, on the grounds that all their spare cars will be in use‘on that day, iA bet of “$5,000. to S000. tas ade o x West End Hotel that there would ‘be it t there rocing ot Moumouts Park this eernnett >® For Giving » Sunday Excursion. A mob then proceeded to the English con- sulate and destroyed considerable property by throwing stones. The arrival of Taotai, a local magistrate, and the coolness of the Brit- ish consul saved the buildings from being set on fire. The consul and his wife escaped from the mob by dressing in Chinese costumes. They hurried tothe custom houseand embarked with other foreign residents in the China Navi- gation Company's receiving ship. A number of foreigners, headed by the con- sul, then armed themselves and passed the time at the custom house, and, assisted by Taotai, repelled the mob, who twice during the night made an attempt to loot and set on fire the custom house and residence of the foreign officials. ‘The following morning an immense crowd again set fixe to the custom house and the surrounding buildings, but the customs staff, fully armed, charged the natives and again put out the fire In the afternoon three Chinese gunboats which were escorting Shen Ping Cheng. the governor of Anhoui, up river, arrived at Woo- Hoo. When informed of the riot the com- mander ordered the gunners to fire blank cartridges, which had the effect of frightening the mob. ‘Some 200 soldiers arrived from Tai- Ping, and this lent additional protection to the foreign residents. METHODISTS NOT ATTACKED. The mob did not make any demonstrations against the American Methodist Episcopal mis- sion, but, advised by the British consul, mis- sionaries from that point also embarked on the Tehsing, which took them, together with the ladies and children of Woo-Hoo, to Shang- hai. At Chian King the priests who escaped from the Woo-Hoo ina boat were picked up. ‘There was only one British man-of-war at the North China station at the time of the riot— the gunboat Linnet—and it was ordered to pro- ceed to Woo-Hoo. On May 16, fourdaysafter Woo-Hoo riots, the natives of Ngan-King made an attack on’ the Koman Catholic mission there, a rumor having reach d them that Taotai of Woo Hoo had for- warded a dispatch to the authorities declaring that the stories about the missionaries were true. The priests succeeded in keeping the mob off and one of the assailants was arrested aud pun- ished. ‘The Catholic mission was not the only one at- tacked, for a crowd equally large made a de- scent on the inland mission near Northgate, but the Chinese authorities arrived in time to prevent any serious damage. The crowd lin- gered about the missions during the next two days, and the native women came to the or- phsnage to reclaim their children who were left there. THREATENED BY THE FRENCH. A French man-of-war was sent for and ar- rived on May 18. Captain De Jonquieres in- formed tie governor of Ng: that if the rioters did not obey the mandates of the mag- istrate he would not hesitate to take stroug measures. The governor responded that order would be maintained. On May 19 the German gun boat Illtia ar- rived, and Capt. Ascher lent his influence to secure protection for the missionaries. cards, however, had been posted by the rioters announcing that the mission buildings would be totally destroyed on Friday, May 22. Placards also had ‘been posted in the French quarter of Shanghai threatening the foreigners. It is reported that BMS. Swift has arrived at Cgan-King. News has been received of the wreck of the steamship Albany, Capt. Hood, in Japanese waters. ‘The vessel lett Hong’ Kong tor New York on May 20. ‘The wreck of the Albany was sold at auction at Kobe, Japan, May 30, and the vessel brought 325,000, the cargo Some of the Guelic’s passengers brought the information that the natives of Canton had again broken out against the missionaries in the burned mission situated on the banks of one of the rivers in the province aud_ put to death all those connected therewith. Just be- fore the Gaelic left, it is stated, four of those murderers were put to death. Cases of abduction and murder are becoming numerous. Several men and women have been enticed beyond the borders of Canton and held for ransom. If ransom were not forthcoming the unhappy victims are to be put to death. WANTED—HELP. ‘FOR RENT--HOUSES. Mrs. Sinclair was seventy-four years old. She was buried in the cemetery at Silver Mount, 8. I. She was the daughter of John Sinclair, well known asa vocalist in his day. Forrest mar. ried her in England in 1837, when she was twenty. She came with him to the United States at the close of that year. The matter was finally brought into court, exciting the greatest in- terest throughout the country. Charles O'Connor appeared for Mrs, Forrest. The writer of the “Consuelo” letter, George Jamie- son, an actor, was co-respondent. On January 24, 1852, after w long and exciting trial, the jury brought in « verdict for Mrs. Forrest. ‘Three thousand dollars a year alimony was al- lowed her. Forrest appealed from this verdict several times without success. It was con- firmed by the higher courts, and 1,000 a year was added to the original alimony. Forrest paid this sam regularly until his death. Mrs. Forrest went on the stage after the di- vorce trial. George Vandenhoff was her in- structor. She made her debut at Brougham's Lyceum, New York, on February 22, 1952, when she played Lady Teazie in “The School for Scandal” and made a hit. She attempted other im t roles. Charles O'Connoraud Mrs. Forrest, or friends of hers, had a controversy in 1876 in regard to the lawyer's part in the divorce trial. Charges were made against him by her, but after an ex- amination the Bar Association vindicated Mr. O'Connor. Theinvestigating committee found on May 31, 1876, that there was no evidence that Mr. O'Connor had become counsel for Mrs. Forrest with the understanding that his ser- vices were tobe gratuitous: the did not permit the public to continue under the false Impression that he had agreed to take the case without compensation, and that the compensa tion he did receive was very moderate. EXAMUNER DRE DENIAL. He Did Not Mislead Bardsley as to the Key- stove Bank’s Condition, In his statement yesterday Bardsley, ex-treas- urer of Philadelphia, said that it was through Bank Examiner Drew's plausible statements of the condition of the Keystone Bank that he had been led to deposit money there. He charged Drew with knowing the bank's condition. It was through H. H. Yard that he had loaned money to banks. Bank Examiner Drew was visibly affected when the news of Bardsley’sattack on his char- acter was communicated to him. “I suppose this is @ thrust at me for calling him a liar and a thief at the meeting of the investigating com- mittee recently.” said Mr. Drew. “Well, when one is exposed to such calumn: as this life is not worth living,” he resum after reflecting upon Bardsley’s accusation for & moment. “the. el is without the shadow of a foundation. allegation that T received from Lucas, Marsh or from anybody favors on any consideration to screen the bank as false as the tongue that gave it utterance. after Mr. Bardsley protessional froutiernan living in the country | will be used but a Lew jours in the evening; good pasture.
