They expect it to pull up out of last place when Alvord and Mc- Query resume their positions and the new players learn how to work together. ‘The Na- tionals show great improvement in their play, and have given Baltimore a hard fight in the series just ended. Em- Westborough, Muss., on the Disappearance of the Courier From the Czarewitch to the Czar. A royal messenger bearing important dis- patches sent trom ‘Tokio by the Czarewitch to the Czar of Russia has mysteriously disappeared, it is said, while on his way from San Francisco to New York. The fact has been kept a secret, and it is not certain that the Russian govern- G. Naterman, « mem- ber of the firm of Gross & Co. of Tokio and London, was on the same Pacific Mail "steam- hip which brought the messenger to this conn- | ry, and told of the disappearance for the first | tyne yesterday in Chicago at the Palmer House, | where he and a number of well-known German and English merchants of Japan and China are on their way from Tokio to Europe. According to Mr. Naterman's account, the messenger intended to make no stops, leaving Sun Francisco for the east on the day of his ar rival there. Near Denver, however, a wreck delayed his train and he stopped over night in that city. He never resumed the journey and has not been since «een. ‘There are many reasons causing his steamer acquaintances to believe that the young Rus- sian has met a violent death at the hands of Japanese enemies of the czarewitch. ‘The most important of these reasons is the hitherto un- vublished truth regarding the attack upon the life of the ezarewiteh. Mr. Naterman was in Tokio at the time and states that the truth was never made known because it showed too plainly the vicions character of even the high- est class of the Japanese people. ‘The at was not made, he says, because the Russian | had desecrated ‘a sucred temple. ‘The ezare- | witch had accepted an invitation to visit a | great noble at Tokio. On the way there he Yielded to the importunities of another noble to visit bim before reaching Tokio. His host at the latter city received this as an insult, and his desire for revenge stopped at nothing, i is alleged, not even the murder of his royal guest. An assassin was therefore hired to kill the |ezarewitch, and the resulting attempt was | given to the world as the work of a religious | fanatic. From every stopping place the czarewitch sends duplicate dispatches to his father by their trusted messengers, who take the most opposite routes. One of these, immediately after the attempted assassination, was sent to St. Petersburg by way of the United States. The theory advanced by Mr. Naterman and his friends is that the authorities, in a weuk at- tempt at ‘continuing the deception regarding the affair, have intercepted and put out of the way all the messengers supposed to bear news of the truth. 400 Two Southern Banks Closed.
