THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON: SATURDAY chosey 5. NOYES that of any other paper As a local NEWS paper aud fm the city. Advertising Medium it has we competitor. ———————————————— The meeting of citizens at Willard Hall Inst night to discuss ways and means of securing the G. A. R. encampment for "92 for Washing- ton showed a spirit which presages success. Washington is beyond all dispute the most in- teresting place in the country forsuch a gather- ing, aud when there is added to that a spirit of generosity on the part of her citizens to con- tribute good hard cash or its equivalent toward making the veterans comfortable and providing all kinds of agreeable divertisements for them the hardest part of the fight is over. Every citizen of Washington and the District sad most of those living within # radius of a bundred miles of the city will be benefited by wach a meeting, and they should all combine in the effort to successfully present the claims of the national capital before the encampment in Detroit next August. It is scarcely necessary to represent here the general claims Washing- toti makes; the delegations from the posts in this city know them all in every detail and ite members will be amply able to present them there. But the delegution must be backed by sound propositions of material assistance com- ing from the business men of the city, and with those in liberal form it shonld carry Washing- fon through by acclamation. Aud it will —— As between the trees about Lafayette Park, which are said to conceal the statue of Lafay- ete, and the statue, the choice of the people is with the trees, and if either must go it must be the statue. ‘The trees have been there « long time and they are grand and beautiful trees. The statue has been there only a short time and it ina fine statue. Neither interferes with the other and they should remain as they are. But, as we have said, if either is to be removed it should be the statue. There are numerous sites for the statue better adapted for it than the much criticised one it now occupies. It can be easily moved without injury, but these stately trees, the growth of ‘many years, can never be replaced. A shocking case of tree-murder was perpetrated when a num- ber of fine trees were cut down to make room for the Lafayette statue, and it is time that a halt was called on this ignorant, brutal vandalism. The office of superintendent of public buildings and grounds has heretofore been filled by gentlemen of sufficient taste and eulture to make them loving and intelligent custodians of the magnificent trees that ure such a distinctive feature of attraction in the public grounds of Washington, and it is a mat- ter of surprise to find the present incumbent not only consenting to, but eagerly urging a continuation of the wanton tree butchery on Lafayette Square. Siti SESE OAD ae a Veterans of that great body feel an interest felt ina less degree by the public at large in the approaching session of the Grand Army of tne Potomac at Butfelo on the Sdand 4th of July. These annual reanions sarve public ends in serving soctal ends. The memories perpet- uated are those of the finer sort—patriotism, submission to authority, patience under multi- als, personal prowess, common sacr: votion to the home. In these gai erings are forgotten all hatreds, all petty Jealonsy, all that leaves a sting ix the mind or iron in the soul, or these are recalled only as object lessons and warnings. The army of the Potomac is linked forever with the greatest deeds and grandest triumphs of the war for the Union. - —_————o+-______ The Philarelphia Press, which bas done vigor- ous work in behalf of honest politics in Pennsylvania, backs up Kefurmer Roosevelt as tollow: “Mr. Theodore Roosevelt goes right on in his crusade for civil service refurin in spite of the unpatriotic ckanors of the spoils press. He is doing noble service in the cause of pure and honest government. It is refreshing to we one ned tlessly for ‘ht of fature all honest papemipreen speakership.” it then a great early to be- gin to talk about it months and months ago when the fever first strack the distinguished Representative from In te The North American Commercial Company imite suit for damages against the United States in closing the seal fisheries should make Great Britain co-respondent. Great Britain has a half interest in the closing business and she bas plenty of money end property to levy a in case « judgment is rendered. ———— As the quemmaia of Morocco slowly dies of ary rot the eyes of France—that France which is doing so much in north Africa just now—are greedily turned upon the land of mosques and white walls and palm trees. But Spain's mouth has been long watering at the same prospect, and Germany and E nglaud may find it to be to their interests toaid her and oppose the stronger claimant. To the American it matters little whether the last sigh of the Moor is breathed in the ear of the Gaul or of the Iberian, es A change in the commer story is noted. The fish and snake yarns abdicate in favor of the old age mortuary chronicle. Never since Me- thuselah’s day bas there been such a rage for longevity. Just why all the centerarians are dying this summer does not appear. —- Mr. Chris Magee of Pittsburg does not wish to be « United States Senator and he is even more opposed to a certain other republican politician of his state from holding the posi- tion. a The state of Pennsylvania threatens to sue the city of Philadelphia for its portion of ex-Treas- urer Bardsley's shortage. “Honest John” will thus become doubly dear to Philadelphia. snare imoucdhashan seh Another murderer in New York has been aenteneed to death by electrocution, and the electric companies are making the law a farce just the same. —ere—____ Asestant Secretary Nettleton hes gone to New York on immigration business, but he did not take Gex. Grosvenor along with him, for ‘obvious reasons. oe It is also advisable to put a police check on ‘the patriotism of the siaall boy who explodes: on the street two weeks before the sth of July. anna Late meteorological reports from all over ‘the country indicate that the need of the hour iscither « cloud which will sot burst ora cloud-burst insurance company. oo With McKinley and Campbell on the track in Ohio, the race will be close enough to cover the contestants with « blanket clear around the track, and the ranuer with the longest nose will win. — +e De Lesseps is to be prosecuted for pushing hie Panama canal scheme snd yot his Suez canal shows by its last report a profit of $7,625,000 on the year's business. ‘The surplus in the treasury is not furnish- img food for democratic animadversion as it formerly did.
