4 THE EVENING STAR has « regelar and permanent circulation in Washington three times Inrger than that of any other paper fm the city. As a local NEWS paper and Advertising Medium it hus ne competitor. re ¥.Time was not so long ago when if a sprig of English royalty occupied a place in an English court of justice the utmost tenderness charac- terized the treatment he received at the hands of attorneys and public. In the earlier stages of the baccarat trial the Prince of Wales re- ceived the customary cautious and delicate handling, and it seemed at one time «a if “the strange and subtle influence of royalty” which on the theory of the plaintiff accounted for his tignature to the implied confession of guilt would continue to operate at the trial, taking all the vigor out of Gordon Cumming’s case, and condemning him hopelessly to an unfavor- able verdict. But the argument of plaintiff's counsel is not conducted on the same lines as his examination of witnesses. It is less consid- erate of the Prince of Wales and more consid- erate of his cliont. It presents a theory of Sir Gordon Cumming’s conduct, consistent with innocence, with the boldness and confidence, which are absolutely essential if the theory is to receive the slightest credit. The signing of the pledge to play cards no more was the damn- ing act by the plaintiff, and no mere suggestion, nothing but the bold and open declaration to the prince's face that this was done with the sacrifice of honor to shield him from scandal would be at all effective. With thie decla- ration came the plaintiff's first and only gleam of hope in the case, and with it comes the knowledge that English pub- lic opinion is now disposed to pat the Prince of Wales on trial as an ordinary mortal to be judyed by the ordinary standards. He bas hitherto been very leniently treated when the facts in his life, long notorious, are consid- ered. The British people are not easily eman- cipated from the noti ms and attitude of loy- alty to the reigning family which is tradition- ally held to be exempt from the criticism that would overwheim less favored mortals. This Populur consideration for the heir to the throne has outlived any desert of the prince. It would seem from the occurrences of yester- day that it ix not very likely, however, to out- live the present scandal. The whole painful story of the Monte-Carloism that characterizes the life at too many elegant country homes, the resorts of the prince and that gay society that devotes itself to him in his houre of case, is not yet told. but a large part of it is known and much of the remainder conjectured more or less plausibly. Ihe prince might well have surmised that something of this life not at all conducive to his reputation, or what remains of it, after the various escapades in which he has played a leading role, would be photo- graphed in this trial and his nervousness 1s therefore easily accounted for. But he and his coterie of admirers could hardly have ex- pected that the counsel for Sir William Gordon Cumming would in a few bold strokes of the scalpel lay so utterly bare the most sensitive and vital portion of his moral anatomy. Prob- ably the plaintiff cheated, but whatever fate be- falls him he has convicted in advance at the bar of public opinion the Prince of Wales. ——_ +e Of course the administration will tarnish all the fucts relative to the Keystone Bank inves tigation of which it has cognizance. The Post- muaster General's testimony is before the pub- lic. The examination of the bank’s affairs will continue, and it is probable that the comp- troller of the currency will appear before the Philadelphia council to testify. There are some matters not yet clearly explained which it is desirable to have cleared up. That there has Deen official negligence on the part of the bank examiner or somie one else 1s strongly suspected, and until free inquiry develops all the facts im the case the suspicions of a portion of the publie will remain. It i Lut simple justice to the parties in this complicated transaction, in- eluding the public officials, that the whole affair sbould be carefully, impartially but rig- idly examined from bottom to top and the real offenders ascertained and punished. ———$—--—______ The morning and evening Adevrtiser of New York has come, not only to stay, but to bea power, for Col. Cockerill’s right hand does not forget its cunning, nor does his tongue clea to the roof of his mouth. With brains, bri liauey and experience in its management the new venture will undoubtedly push at once to the front among the New York dailies, and every one who knows Col. Cockerill will wish him heartily the good fortune which is sure to come. ++ ‘There has been and promises to be great ac- tivity in gocal church buildiug. Washington, the community of churches, is not satistied with well doing or with anything short of best doing. Washington always aims high and at tall objects, and seldom misses. She has some good church edifices, but that is just the reason why she must have more and better. ee The verdict of the jury in the baccarat case virtually conviets Sir William Gordon Cum- ming of cheating at cards, but the verdict of the public condemns the whole crowd, ac- cusers and accused, including the Prince of Wales, —~++—__.
