The grounds were soaked and the Senators were utterly unable to field at all. The other side, however, seemed to be able to play ball in the mud as well as on dry ground and did not make an érror. Certainly no idle whim actuated Congress in permitting the streets to be occupied by car lines. A necessity for improved transportztion facilities was recognized. It was undoubtedly contemplated in granting these charters that facilities should be increased as necessity should arise. What are the facts as they confront us at the present time? Only one of the principal | lines of the city can be classed as fully up to the | demands made on its transportation. faciliti the 7th street cable. At 4 o'clock 15,000 or 20,000 people in this city vacate office and start homeward. At this hour not one of tke | principal lines save the 7th street cable offers a | comfortable means of reaching outer-district | points. On F street, for instance, the cars are $0 jammed, crammed and rammed that a good working quorum of passengers in each car are compelled to stand. At 4 o'clock all the prin- cipal horse car lines should greatly increase the numbers of their cars. Is it to be wondered at that the masses of the people are discontented and clamoring for municipal control of street ear lines? It is time these corporations were waking up to the fact that this city is growing, especially in private and public official popu- lation. ‘The great increase in the pension oftice, ‘Treasury and War Departments last year ar cited as examples. The censns in its var branches embraces an army of itself. Every- where there is phenomenal growth, save in the paseenger facilities of our horse car lines. IMB —_—_. CANADA'S PKEMIER DEAD. Sir Joba Macdonald Passed Away at 10:15 Saturday Night. Sir John Macdonald, the premier of the Canadian administration, died at 10:15 o'clock Saturday night. The beginning of the end came early Friday morning. The afternoon bulletin from the physicians at the bedside an- nounced that the premier’s strength was rapidly diminishing, and then all hope fled. At 9 o'clock that night Sir John’s heart failed | in its work, and he sank so low that for some | time he seemed to have ceased to live. He rallied feebly and fought his way back to the weakest hold on life a man could have. At 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon the physicians con- curred in the opinion that the premier could not live until 4 o'clock, and again did they err. The dying premier had been perfectly un- conscious for nearly thirty hours, and still the spark of life lingered on. Eventide found the members of the family gathered about the bedside of the dying | statesman waiting patiently for dissolution. | At 10 o'clock it was evident that the end was near at hand. The household was summoned | to the death chamber. Lady Macdonald stood by the side of her noble hus! ana around her gathered the members of the family. Death came peacefully to the aged premier @t 10:15. He was unconscious to the last. The pulse fluttered. the breath came sborter and then all wax still. When the announcement of Sir John’s death was made the bells of the city were tolled to convey the intelligence to the thousands who were anxiously awaiting this signal that the beloved premier was no more. FUSERAL ARRANGEMENTS. Sir John Macdonald's body will be privately removed from Eurnscliffe to the parliament buildings and will lie in state from 10 o'clock tomorrow morning antil the hour of the funeral. The state funeral will leave the pare liament buildings at 1 o'clock p.m. Wednesday for St. Alban’s Church, thence to the Canadian Pacific station, whence the body will be con- veyed to Kingston. The body will lie in state im the city hall in Kingston until noon, when the internient will take place. In all the city churches in Ottawa yesterday touching references were made to the departed statesman. Hundreds of telegrams reached Lady Macdonald during the day. ‘They all ex- tended condolence and sympathy. Queen Vie- toria telegraphed from Palmoral to the gover- nor general that she was deeply pained to learn of Sir Joun’s death, which she regarded asa great loss to Canada and the sovereign. Sir Charles Tupper also cabled s mewage of aym- pathy from Vienna. Other messages were re- eeived from Lord Salisbury and scores of nota- bles in England. THE NEW MINISTRY. Sir Hector Langevin said last night that cer- tain decencies had to be observed, and that he thought it extremely unlikely that Lord Stanley would take any action regarding @ ministzy till Biter Sir John's faneral, 3 A quiet canvass is being carried on among Prominent conservatives in Toronto, with a View of discovering how far the accession of Sir John Thompson to the party leadership would be acceptable. The feeling against him on the part of the Orangemen has been found to be of UWexpected strengib. | Dais; BAD FOR BICYCLISTS. ‘The Recent Wet Weather—A New Club Formed. ‘The weather last week was too bad for biey- clists and there were fewer cycles on the street than during any recent week. Although there but was iittle out of door riding the wheelmen were busily engaged making arrangements for the big bicycle meet in Hagerstown next monta. ‘The run of the Arlington Club to Frederick yes- terday had to be postponed on account of the weather. Recently many upright wheels hav appeared on the streets again which is an indi- cation the bicycle men say of so many more | new riders. There are many uprights on the market and the supply being much larger than the demand they are sold at extremely low figures, and for that reason many new begin- ners purchase them. There has been a great demand for ‘91 wheels of various patterns during the past two month) and the dealers have found it impossible to all orders promptly. ‘THE NOMAD CYCLE CLUB. Last week a party of ladies and gentlemen met at the residence of Miss Grace Keefer on Capitol Hill and organized the Nomad Cycle Club, electing the following officers: Arthur H. Smith, president; Miss Mamie A. Douglas, vice president; Cyrus ©. Babb, secretary; Miss Grace Keefer, treasurer; T.' H. Brooks, eap- tain; B. F. Larcombe, first lieutenant, and E. Hepburn, second lieutenant. t week the club will become members of A. W. and will visit Hagerstown during the bieycle meet in July as a league club. The weekly runs of the club are to be made Wednes- day nights. | SS FOLKS AT FALLS CHURCH. Washingtonians Going There forthe Sum- mer—Im provements in Progress. Corzespondence of The Evening Star, Fauts Cuures, Va., Jane 5, 1891. The reign of the rosy month of June just be- gun seems to promise locally a clond of, to us, important events, showing a{notable influx of new people and greater growth and prosperity to our town. Mr. Green Gaither, one of our grocerymen, who for manyweeks of illnese has been confined, is out again. Miss Sarah Rawlin, his niece, who has also been very ill for a long time, is slowly convalescing. Mrs. Albert Ives, who had paralysis, died two or three days ago. Immediate cause of death, abscess at base of the brain. Rev. T. W. T. Nolan has been fitting up the house and painting it, and putting in order its environs, purchased from the administrator of Dr. Moran. Mr. E. J. Bireh of Georgetown has rented Mr. Almund Birch’s house and will move his family into it for the summer. Mr. Stewart of Washington has rented the house of Mrs. Ives and with his family will occupy it during the summer. Prof. N. F. Graham is building a cottage on the grounds commanding such a delightful view of the national monument, the Capitol and intervening country. Esquire Hillier nas nearly completed his res- idence. Mr. George Crossmun is building a fine house on Crossmun street. Mr. Harry Turner is having a cellar exca- vated for a’ much larger and finer house than those he has recently had built. Miss Sybills Sewall has had a story added to her house, materially improving its appear- ance. Mrs. A. F. Kingsley of Washington has rented rooms here. which she will occupy with her daughter during the summer. Mr. E. C. Houck of the patent office, who re- cently purchased the Darling residence, has had ‘4 spacious addition built to it and will move his iamily into it at once. Painting of residences is epidemic, as Messrs. W. H. Doolittle, W. W. Kinsley, Capt. E. H. Repley, P. H. Christman and W. H. Nowlan are demonstrating. Capt. A. P. Eastman has purchased a fine lot, which adjoins his own, of Miss Belle Merrifield and has greatly improved its appearance by fencing and setting of trees. Messrs. Brinkerhotf and Reed of Herndon, V«., are making notable progress in the con- struction of a fine residence on the Sherwood subdivision, Other residences will be mco- meneced soon. E. W. Watkins, having sold awhile ago his house, is building a large house for his use. Meantime his family are boarding with Mrs. England. Mr. M. E. Church is building an addition to and real estate office and other- wise improving the surroundings. Mr. Fulton Gorden, who purchased the fine house of Miss Belle Merritieid, wax married re- cently, and when he returns’ from his bridal trip will occupy it. ‘the town council at their last meeting or- dered a new bridge to be built over Four Mile run and the construction of a sidewalk along Broad street connecting the Sherwood sub- division with the post office and the raiiroatl station at West E Capt. Sensner, a retired naval officer, with his two daughters and two sons, are stopping at Mrs. Raymond's. Lieut. Wetzel and family are stopping with Mr. A. E. Rosebeck. The riding club were out on Thursday even- ing last. ‘Ihe sound of the bugle heralded their coming and gave to the cavalcade something of & martial air. LS. A. pate ‘The Good Templars. Alarge meeting was eld at Good Templar Hall Sunday evening under the auspices of In- dependent Lodge, D. F. Dumberth in the chair. Mr. George Giles gave an interesting temper- nce address. Mr. H. K. W. Patterson gave two pleasing selections, “Mr. Charles Allen of Empire Council, 3. of J.,and Mr. Davis of Pioneer Council, 8. of J., made appeals which resulted in securing several signatures to the Good Templar pledge. ji An Interesting Discussion. Resolved, That Congress should pass aservice pension bill, was the subject under debate at the rooms of the Y. M. C. A. Literary Society last Saturday evening. Mr. Cobleigh of Massa- chusetts opened the aftirmative and Mr. Down- ing of Wlinois defended the negutive. Mr. Cobleigh was assisted by Messrs. Paul, Miller, Goodwin, Spangler and Leonard. "Messrs. Wolverton, Freeman, Lautner and Derrick assisted Mr. Downing: The decision was unani- mons for the aflirmative. ‘The question for June 13 is: Resolved, That convict labor should not be allowed to compete } with honest labor. The leading polemics are Mr. Freeman for the affirmative and Mr. Laut- ner for the negative. piste Eat Broke Up the Banquet. A Beloit, Wis., dispatch dated June 5 ‘say: There is considerable excitement here today over a disturbance by the college and acad- emy students last night, which was al- most a riot. The senior academy class was to have its annual banquet, which event for years has been the oceasion for more or less of a rumpus. Usually members of the banqueting class are kidnapped by members of other clases, or otherwise prevented from participating in the festivities. Last night some of the college and academy men made a charge on the banqueting class. One student your grocer AUCTION SALES. AUCTION SALES. AUCTION SALES. | urges you to buy fo co vans _FUTURE DAYS.
