NOTHING SERIOUS IS APPREHENDED. A Number of Lives Lost in a Steamship Explosion. ILLNESS OF MR. GLADSTONE. New Yorx, May 11.—Secretary Blaine, who came to New York on Tuesday last to see bi tonic and also to attend the opening of de Carnegie Music Hall, is at the residence of his son-in-low, Walter Damrosch, 72 West 70th street, somewhat ill. His intention when be came to New York was to remain only «few days. It is stated that bis protracted stay is due to « severe attack of indigestion, with which he was seized on Friday last Dra. Janeway and Dennis, it is learned, are in attendance on Mr. Blaine. They were with him forsome time yesterday. They believe that the recent overwork on the part of the Secretary is mainly attributable for his present indisposition. The Secretary, the doctors sa needs rest. ‘The following bulletin was issued last night “Doctors Janeway and Dennis say thet Mr. Blaine is prostrated by overwork and that be has had an acute attack of indigestion accom- panied by vertigo, and they have insisted on absolute quiet and rest.” It was stated at the house of Mr. Damrosoh this morning that Mr. Blaine’s condition was greatly improved. Dr. Dennis called at an early hour and made an examination of the Secretary of State. He said that there was nothing alarming about Mr. Blaine’s condition and he advised rest and quiet. The only medi- cine which be prescribed was pepsin for indi- gestion. Mre. Blaine was seen by a reporter and in an interview she said: “Mr. Blaine is «till confined to his bed, but he is resting quietly and there is no danger whatever, and in fact he ix almost well. His attending ‘physician advied Mr. Blaine to rest and not to return to Washington today. The Secretary would return to the capital if 1 would permit it. But, in view of the physician's advice, | would not let him go under any circumstances. Sinee the President's absence from Washington Mr. Blaine bas been working very hard, and the fact is that he was called upon to look after all the affairs of the Department of State. I at- tribute the present attack to Mr. Blaine’s hav- ing hurried over to this city to see bis daugh- ter off for Europe. and thus getting out of his regular daily routine.” Airs. Blaine denied that the Secretary bad had another attack of vertigo. He has had no fainting and his mind is perfectly clear. ‘The attending physician will not call again to- day unless sent for. MR. BLAINE BAS A GOOD REST. Mrs. Damrosch speaking of ber father's con- dition said: “Mr. Blaine is very mach better this morning. He hada splendid rest last night, the ‘iret good rest he hus had since Thureday, is quite able to travel today and intended to leave for W: this afternoon, but be has been enjoying bis rest today and receiving so much it from ithe has boiled egg with an excellent appetite and have just, been “preparing « spring chicken for luncheon. ‘The first few father, andi. vacation ® month earlier this Jeet, leaving Washington in June nis was here early this morn- tient so much im} 1 do not expess back.
