The members of the King’s Daughters and Sons in this District held @ mesting last even- ing in the lecture room of the Church of the Covenant. The various circles in this city were Tepregented, and the reports made of the work done were of an encouraging character. The president for the District, Miss Lipscomb, pre- sided, and after devotional exercises Miss Kimball sang a solo. The District secretary, ‘Mrs. Lapham, read « report which detailed the work accomplished by each circle. One circle makes and distributes garments to the poor, another meets once a month for Bible study, while the members of another welcome strang- ers whocome to their church and call upon them during the year, Many members have been added to the order and many new circles formed, as the sale of 250 King’s Daughter badges will testify. Azsavon’s—Carleton Opera Company in “The Merry War. Natioxat.—“The Still Alarm.” Hanns’ started auspiciously. The “Merry War” again tonight. Natiowat.—“The Still Alarm” at the National last night was anything but astill alarm. It was in fact a mest vociferous affair, rising slowly from the orchestra chairs, swelling into the circle, rolling upward to the balcony and bursting into showers and voleanoes of ap- plause in the gallery. “The Still Alarm” isa lay which appeals ‘to nearly all the emotions, from the thrill we feel chasing itself down our back bones. when a fire bell clangs and we see the laddies tearing along the street, to the ten- derér feeling that suffuses us when’ two hearts beat as one in the presence of a large and ap- reciative audience. The playing of the play yy such estublished favorites as are in the cast could not but result most satisfactorily and when to their skill is added the more material excitant of a pair of magnificent Arabian steeds and a $7,000 real fire engine and a great grey hound to run “wid der machine,” what more could be expected than storms of vocifer- ‘ous approval? Worthy of more than a general notice were the specialties in the play, found in the dancing of Miss Weevie Vivian and the singing of the firemen. Of especial interest to firemen in every city is the third act, laid in fully equipped engine house, with all the latest appliances. “The Still Alarm,” though not new or of the highest type of the drama, has nds of adihirers who will never tire of it. Haunis’.—“Struck Gas,” one of the funniest farce comedies that has been in Washington a the season, opened a week’s en ment last night at Harris’, aud for two hours and forty minutes the audience was kept in a continue! roar of laughter. The company is strong individually and collectively. The re- sult is the presentation of a comedy in the very heat manner. ‘There are several first-class va- risty stars in the company, an: special- ties were greatly enjoyed. Miss Lillian Har- per, a charming little commedienne, who as- sumes the leading role, completely won the au- dience. Hugh Mack ‘as Oscar Wilde Drake introduces a Chinese specialty of considerable merit. Chas. E. Edwards as Decemler Duck shares the honors with him. Ed. H. Banker ae Wellington reminds one of the late Jchn I. Raymond. His delineation of the Old Maid provokes roars of laughter. All of the ladies are exceptionally bright and pretty. ‘The Arlington sisters do a clever specialty, and Lucille Grieves, well known ‘ashington, made a hit in her'dancing.
