“THE EVENING STAR. WASHIN GTON: For about twenty years the necessity for an automatic car coupler for freight cars has Deen generally recognized and this recognition has greatly stimulated invention. Neverthe- lesa, railway men deeming the problem in- soluble gave small encouragement to the in- yentors until forced by the large number of sceidents and public opinion ss exprossed in state legisistion. On the reorganization of the Master Car Builders’ Association, in ‘UA, the subject of an automatic car coupler was referred to favorably in a brief report by s committee. In 1334, continuing the history of the movement as it w found carefully stated im that excellent authority, the Engineering News, the conrseton of master car builders declared uninmously in favor of the coupler which performs the coupling slong 4 vertical plane. ‘Teste followed until 187, when the exeontive committee ‘of the Master Car Builders’ Association recom- mended and the association by a large majority adopted « standard type of automatic car coupler. Bat railway companies were at first alow to act on thie suggestion. The estimated uumber of cars equipped each year is as fol- lows: Before and during 1887, 3,000; during 1888, 2,500; during 1889, 34,000: during 1890, 38,500, with orders so far this year for over 21,000 automatic car-couplers received by two manufacturers only, indicating a eub- ‘stantial increase in 1801. But while the num- ber of care using these automatic car-couplers increases annually the growth of freight equip- ment in the United States is constantly acceler- sted, and it is estimated that the number of link-and-pin coupler cars is actually being in- creased insteed of diminished at the present time, Nearly nine per cent of the freight rolling stock of the United States was on January 1, 1881, equipped with the automatic car coupler. American railroads covering 4,665 miles, or S63; per cent of the total railway mileage of the country, and running 806,629 cars, or 70 per cont of the total freight equipage of the country, have authorized exclusively or in part the use of these couplers, and these railroads ace the strongest carry the bulk of the traffic of the United Btatee But the $3,000,000 invested in the automatic couplers, on about one-tenth of the freight cars of the country, will not prove of substantial benefit until the old coupler is generally dis- placed. The improvement in s fraction of the ears to be coupled in most cases with cars of the old type is obviously of little advantage. fm the United S*atex —___2.— Gen.
