In 1836 the patent office occupied, with the General Post Office, a building on the present site of the Post Office. This building on the | 15th of December, 1836, was entirely destroyed by fire, and while many of the archives of the Post Office Department were saved the ralua- ble collections and papers belonging to the patent office were entirely lost, only one book trom the library, and this of little value, being saved from the wreck. This fire started some building contained and the lack of appliances for its control the flames rapidly spread over the entire structure, which was totally de- stroyed. AS this time there were many rumors afloat of the occasion within, while the cordon of smoking, throbbing engines, the armed guards, driven the flames around the west hall and in one moment the fire seemed to spring through the root from 8th to 9th streets, a whole block in length.
