4 THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON MONDAY . .-Mareh ‘23, 1991. exosEY S NOTES. = eee THE EVENING STAR has the fullest Local Newspaper in the World, The reassembling of the international Ameri- can monetary conference brings up the question of coinage in a practical shape. Whether the con- ference will be able to do more than it did last year—simply to meet and adjourn—or than has been effected by previous conferences held in Enrope remains to beseen. The Latin union, composed of France, Italy, Switzeriand, Belgium and Greece, proposed the unlimited coinage of gold and of five-frane silver pieces of full legal tender at the ratio of 153 kilo~ grams of silver to one kilogram of gold. Under this treaty all other silver were to be coined on government account and made subsidiar; Among the amendments to thir treaty of the Latin union was one suspending silver coinage at fall legal tender. Of the countries repre sented in the present conference the Argentine Republic, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecnador, Peru, Venezuela and the Central American states have the system of the Latin Union—that is, the ratio of gold to silver i# 1 to 15.5. In Chili the ratio is 1 to 16.4. Brazil is a gold mono- metallic state, with silver subsidiary coins. ‘The ratio in the United States of America is 1 10 15.9%. The coinsof all these varions repub- lies are different im value, and the present movement looks toa common medium of ex- change between them with a common coinage. But Great Britain, a gold mono-metallic state, hasa strong held on the southern American nations and her opposition must be duly esti- mated in any calculations of chances. —— ‘The last of the greater leaders of the con- federate movement and one of the two or three greatest of its generals died in this city Satu yy night. Gen. Joseph E. Jobnston, outliving the animosities of the war, had served as a pall- bearer of the three military heroes of the nation in that contest, Grant, Sheridan and Sherman, calling their names in the order in which they departed from the scenes of earth. For bim these men all cherished a deep regard and the tender message from the last named, delivered by his son to Gen. Johnston after the death and burial of Gen. Sherman, shows in a most pleasing light the relations between the two men. The cureer of the dead general was eventful He behaved like the sol- dier he was in the Black Hawk, the Seminole, the Mexican and the civil war and bore to his grave the marks of ten wounds inflicted in battle. Gen. Sherman and others ranked him in military ability higher than any other con- federate general. Gen. Johnston was a man of superior culture, of refined manners, of, great personal popularity. ‘The last years of his life Were pussed in the National Capital where he | had numerous friends of all sections, parties and conditions. — oo ‘The Muscovite government church is now ap- parently using all its power to crush out every form of opposition to its tenets. The sects that have sprung up from the orthodox Greek church have been repressed throughout the country, although a nominal subscription has in many cases secured immunity. But the Hebrews have been persecuted and are now under ban- ishment. The strong hand of the government the southern provinces rests also upon the Protestants. Even the granddaughter of Queen Victoria, Elizabeth of Hesse, wife of the Grand Duke Sergius, brother of the Czar, has been compelled by force of circumstances, if not actual physical force. to abjure the Anglican creed and accept that of the Greek communion. ‘The last mentioned fact is not likely to cause the existing animosity towerd the Russians in England and Germany to abate. If pan-slavism is ever to amount to ansthing more than a figment of the imagination Russia must cease this tierce persecution on account of religious belief. —-—_ += Tomorrow morning Governor Bulkeley of Connecticut and Comptroller Nicholxs Staub, the one a republican, the other a democrat, will engage in a contest for blood. The gover- nor, whose title is said to have a flaw or two in it, will endeavor to enter the state capitol: the comptroller, who is custodian of the buildin, will do his best to prevent him. If the “code was only in operation in the land of maple nut- megs this difficulty could be quietly and effect- ually settled. Mark Twain's bome is in Hart- ford, and with his experience as a second in the great French duel an interesting combat might be carried to a successful conclusion without damaging either the physical beings of the combatants or doing violence to the public morals. How would basswood hams at fifteen paces do? ————.+2—___ ‘The Hatfiekl-MeCoy feud has met death at the hand of the telegraph editor. “Cap.” Hat- field publicly announces his weariness at the oft-printed line, “Border warfare in times of peace,” and bas declared his intention to re- frain from further hostility. The few infan- tile remnants of the MeCoy family will doubt- jess be relieved tolearn that they may now attend district school without an escort, but “Cap.” Hatfielt’s conclusions will bring sorrow to the homes of at least two rustic undertakers, while inexpressible grief cannot fail to be apparent on the features of those who have for twenty years past supplied the rival families with pow- der and buckshot. There will be peace in West Virginia and Kentucky during the coming «um- mer, but unless ." Hatfield changes his mind there will also be » dearth of news. ——s King Cotton must be surely losing his grip on the south when cotton states like Georgia embark in the culture of tobacco. In old times, before Cotton was crowned King To- bacco’s reign was over « smaller territory than at present, and it was sway finally detrimen- tal to the whole r t the lands of Maryland and Virginia very nesrly worn out. The change may be good for Georgia fora short season. LIGHTHILL. 1411 K STREET NORTHWEST, WASHINGTON, March 21. ‘MR. EDITOR: In a large number of cases of catarth the throat is affected as well as the nasal passages, and ‘when such is the case a feeling of irritation, fullness, rawness. tenderness or pain is felt in the throat, in- creased upon pressure or while swallowing, and occa- sionally a distressing sensation is compla‘ned of, as if ‘hair or bristle or other foreign substance had lodged inthe throat. The mucous membrane is coated with a tough, viscid discharge, which provokes an almost constant desire for scraping, hemmine or hawking, while at times a disagreeable sensation of dryness in the throat is almost constantly present. In some cases the ability to swallow is sensibly impatred, so that pa- tients find it somewhat diffleult to force down the food and are troubled occasionally with paroxysms of choking. ‘The tonsils are more or Isss enlarged and inflamed and often contain a cheese-like offensive matter, which can only be removed by pressure. The uvula is elon- ated, irritating the epiglottis, giving rise to prolonged fits of distressing cough, and often producing by this constant friction more serious ailments of the larynx. The fauces are thickened, the follicies are enlarged and inflamed—the eustachian tubes partly closed—pro- ducing distressing noises in the ears and head and more or less loss of hearing—from an uneasiness and occasional opening and shutting sensation in the ears toa decided deafness, which increases with every cold ‘until useful hearing is lost. ‘The voice is always more or less affected, becoming hoarse, weak or cracked, and occasionally it is so im- paired that it degenerates into a mere whisper. Cough of variable severity is often present, sometimes of a mere hacking character, but occasionally of a very severe and troublesome nature, accompanied by wan- dering pains and other uncomfortable sensations in the chest, together with great debility and progressive emaciation. In fact, so alarming are these symptoms: in some cases that they are apt to be inistaken for those of tubercular disease, and many a case of catarrh that came under my observation had been pronounced consumption, even by experienced physicians, and vainly treated as such, while all the symptoms rapidly disappeared as svon as the treatment was directed to the eradication of the catarrh. For over thirty years Ihave devoted my exclusive attention to the careful study and sclentific investiga- tion of deafness, catarrh aud diseases of the respiratory organs, and have succeeded in formulating a system of treatment which is absolutely painless, prompt in its action, and positively curative in its effects. From the first application great benefit is experienced, which continues from day today until a final and permanent cure is the result. ‘Respectfully yours, : A. P.
