2 THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON, D.C. MO MARCH 9, 1891. A NEW LUTHERAN CHURCH. An Organization Which WII Be Connected ‘With the General Council. ‘Three weeks ago Sunday, February 15, divine services were held for the first time by the Rev. John Mueller, late of Concordia congregation, in the Immanuel Chapel, on 14th street above R street northwest, with the view of establish- ing an Evangelical Lutheran church of the general council in this city. As the general council has a number of families bere, but no cungregation of this branch of conservative ‘Latheranism had ever been commenced, tie urgent request was presented by several Lutherans to Rev. Mueller to remain in the city and place himself at the head of this move- ment. The fact of securing the Immanuel Chapel, through the kindness of the officers of the First Baptist congregation of this city at a nominal rental, induced the Lutherans to fur- nish it for the use of divine services according to Lutheran usage, and gave the first « nity to extend a cordial invitation t0 8 who were in sympathy with the organization of « general council church. Yestertiny (Sunday), after the morning services, a meeting was presided over by Rev. Mr. Mueller, and it was Gnanimoualy resolved to organize “Immanuel ical Lutheran Church.” A number = a enrolled as charter members, and the ing outlook for an increase of the number in the near future is the most assuring feature of waccoss. ‘While thisis tobe a. dit ‘tinetively Lutheran ¢ hurch it shall, ite mem- bers say, consistently strive against exclusive ultra-Lutheranism on the one hand, nor will it allow its doctrinal distinctiveness to be obliter- sted by loose unionistic practioes on the other. ing and evening services are con- dected ia Os English language, while an after- noon service is held for the Germans of that section of the city in their native tongue. At all the services the full liturgy of the general council church book is ased. A Sunday school has also bei begun, which promises to be- come in time a helpful addition to the work of the church. Scns In Bis Father's Old Seat. Col. Andrew Stewart, Representative-elect from the twenty-fourth district of Pennsyl- vania, has been in the city during the past week and was on the floor of the House in the dying hours of the Fifty-first Congress. He is ‘© man of fine physique and agreeable manner. Mr. Stewart 1 son of the late Hon. Andrew wart, sr., presented the same district oo ategrsice: ‘at that time figured asa fcKinley in tariff legislation. “Mee Stewart leaves today for his im Fayette county, where he has large lumber interests, and will not return again until Congress convenes next winter.
