If there ever wasa crowd at the Capitol it was there last night. The scenes which ordi- narily enliven the death of a Congress always bring out a great many people who never think of visiting the national legislature at any other time. Like an enormous edition of one of those illuminated toys which children call “light-boxes" was the Capitol yesterday evening. There was illumination in every window, and despite the heavy drizzle of rai which vet in early and kept in good working order until late the multitude put on its rubber clothing and besieged the official home of the national legislators. Galleries in both Senate and House were speedily filled to their utmost capacity, and the people who failed to secure admission to a point of vantage from whence a few members might be seen ora trifle of debate stood on their toe-tips in the corridors and stepped on other people's corns and en- ved themselves in various other ways. They ept the elevators loaded tosuch an extent that many Senators, members and employes pre- ferred to walk and «wear rather than run the risk of suffocation. Curious couples through all sceessible portions of the bpilding, tried the whispering and echo stones in statuary hall. poked their noses—both masculine ani feminine—into all sorts of places where they had no business, looked at the pictures by light, inspected committee rooms and blocked things up generally. 4A OREAT NIGHT FOR THE RESTAURANTS. ‘Tt was 4 ‘greet night for the restaurants. ‘Thove young folks who had never before ex- perienced the delight of eating under the shadow of the great dome, strolled into the dining roomsand consumed much that was ible drinkable. Especially heavy were the sales of ice cream, light confectionery and senatorial pies. ‘There ure many kinds of pie in this world, but there ix only one style of senatorial pie, and last night the demand was several points ahead ot the supply. ‘THINNED OUT AT MIDNIGHT. By midnight there was remaining but a small Proportion of the original multitude that had thronged the galleries and corridors. There wasa tolerably unanimous movement in the direction of ~‘the last car,” and those who did not catch that fleeting vehicle had either to trudge through the shoe-penetrating slush and the falling rain or else charter a night liner. It was ahard night on the boys—the pages. ‘They came on duty yesterday morning and re- mained with the Senate and House until this afternoon. They were organized into reliefs, and in this way 4s much as possible of slumber was allowed each youngster. ‘THE SENATE SCENE ATS A.M. The Senate had but » small audience when the clocks throughout the Capitol chimed the hour of 3a.m. Washingtonians are generally aceustomed to sitting up late, but 3 o'clock was a trifle later than late. NO RECESS IX THE HOUSE. The House did not adjourn or take a recess during the night. The session was busy, but far from exciting, the spirit of routine prevail- ing. ‘The galleries were crowded until mid- night and were not quite empty at dayligh' though comparatively few spectators remain after midnight. The only thing in the way of excitement on the floor was that stir and con- fasion attending the bustle and anxiety of mem- rs to get ion opes of gett some litte bill through at the lait moment the activity over the conference reports. In the wee hours of the morning the louse was picturesque rather than exeiting, members ly- lng about in utter of dignity 0 of position. Several ties during: the seerion pereonal difficulties arose between members and argh language was exchanged on several occasions, but it was all in an undertone, not attracting the attention of the galleries. ——_.-—___ THE NIGHT'S WORK. Measures Considered and Disposed of Be- tween Two Days, The Senate continued its session yesterday afternoon until 6 o'clock and then took recess until 8 p.m., when it continued its sitting until 6:15 this morning, at which hour a recess was taken until 9a.m. After Tux Sran’s report of the Senate proceedings closed yesterday a fur- ther conference was ordered on the copyright bill. After passing the Senate bill to incorporate the National Conservatory of Music in America and some sixty House pension bills a resolution was agreed to directing the committee on finance to ascertain in every practicable way and to report from time to time the effect of the tariff laws upon the imports and cxports, the growth, development and production and prices of agricultural and mannfactured arti- cles at home and abroad, and upon. wages, do- mestic and foreign, with authority to sit at such times and places as the committee may deem advisable. ‘Mr. Manderson, president tom., was ules in place ot Mr ols se on ru in ir. Iny re- signed; Mr. Casey, a member of the committee on agriculture in place of Mr. Blair, resigned, and Mr. McPherson, a member of the select committee on the Pacific railroads in place of deceased. | Mr. Hearst, ‘THE EVENING SES6I0X. ‘When the evening session began at 8 o'clock the Senate continued the passage of the House pension bills on the calendar. A conference was ordered on the deficiency bill and Messrs. Hale, Allison and Cockrell were appointed conferees on the part of the Senate. Phe Senate insisted on the Hawatian cable amendment to the diplomatic and consular ap~ ‘opriation bill, and agreed to further con- ference, Mr. Hale stating, in reply to.a question by Mr. Cockrell, that that was the only matter in dispute between the two Houses. ‘THE COPYRIGHT BILL AQAIX. The bill to transfer the revenue marine serv- ice from the Treasury to the Navy Department was, on motion of Mr. Gray, taken up by a vote of 35 yeas to 28 nays, but was almost immedi- ately laid aside in order to pass the conference reports on the Indian and post office appropria- tion bill. Mr. Platt then presented the conference re~ port on the copyright ill, stating that as agreed upon the neasaro did not contain elther the Sherman or Ingalls amendment. ‘The conference report on the pension appro- priation bill was presented and agreed to and then the vote on the conference report on the gopsright, bill was taken. The fact was kept very quiet at the te- quest of the mother of the deceased and be- came publicly known yesterday. The incinera- tion took place in Samson's crematory. On February 14 three of Miss Abbott's executors arrived and arranged all details. On the morn- ing of the 17th an elegant casket nddressed to Mr. Samson arrived from the west on the limited express and was taken directly to the crematory on 6th avenue. ‘The remains were immediately placed in the retort and in ex- actly one hour and fifteen minutes the incineration was completed. At 4:30 o'clock that evening the ashes were placed in an ordinary urn and shipped on e Philadelphia express to New York city, where they were placed ina vault of the safe deposit comnany to await final interment in the family ourial ground in Massachusetts. When the body was placed in the furnace it was robed in an elegant dress made in Paria at a cont of $5.00. Yesterday's proceedings fully identified Polietz, the man who made the con- fession on Monday, Scoffedi and Bagnetto, three of the nine men now on trial for their lives. These men were recognized by several witnesses as being among the five who did the actual shooting. The generally accepted theory is that the reason why the state did not allow Polietz to turn state's evidence is that the district attor- ney is in possession of such conclusive proof ‘egainst all of the accused that his testimony Was not thought necessary. Polietz was kept separate from the other p: ers Monday night. He came to court yesterday in a different van from the one in which the other cight prison- ers were immured. All had a hay and woebegone appearance as if they fully reatized their desperate condition and had passed a sleepless night. ive murderous sawed-off weapons, found near the scene of the assassination, were produced in court yesterday, one of which still contained its load, composed of lead #1 and pieces of iron. ‘It was said that Polietz, in his confession, implicated several other par- ties not yet apprehended and said thata woman was at ‘the bottom of the assassination; that Macheca, the most prominent of the men now under arrest, and the chief were rivals, and that it was decided by the mafia to have him put out of the way. ‘This, however, is only a Tumor, a8 60 far no further arreste have been made.
