The report cites the fact that they devoted much time and heard arguments by many persons in their search for information on the silver question. “Under the present act,” the report states, “54,000,000 annually is being added to the vol- ume of the currency of the country in the form of treasury notes for bullion purchases. RETIREMENT OF JUSTICE STEPHEX, An address will probably be submitted this week in the house of commons looking toward the removal from active service of Sir James Fitzjames Stephen of the queen's bench division of the high court of justice. Justice Stephen is one of the ablest members of the English judiciary and an author of high repute on the subject of criminal law. Of late he has dis- played marked eccentricity on the bench, so much so that the counsel in the Lyddon potson- ing case at Favresham, Kent, asked to have the case removed from Justice Stephen's jurisdic- tion, alleging, however. another cause, althongh | coat the-real reasor was wall understood. Owing to the fact that Justice Stephen's peculiarities have displaved themselves more conspicuously since the trial of the Maybrick poisoning case, when he charged strongly to convict young Lyddon, who is accused, wholly on cfroumatan- tial evidence, of ‘ing his brother, counsel was aftaid to have the case tried before Stephen. | 1 LORD CHURCHILL PREACHES SYMPATHY.
