The card reception tendered by the National | Woman's Christian Temperance Union to Mrs. | Mary H. Hunt at Calvary Baptist Charch last evening was in every way a delightful af- fair. Mrs. Hunt is the national superintendent of the department of scientific temperance education in schools and colleges. She is also one of the most popular workers in the union, and the reception last evening was a pleasant tribute to her character at = white ribboner. | The large lecture room of the church was prettily decorated and the columns were hung with the stars and stripes. The receiving party stood on the lecture platform—Mrs. Hunt, as- sisted by Miss Frances £. Willard and Mrs. Mary Lathrop—while Hon. John A. Pickler of South Dakota officiated as master of ceremonies and introduced the guesta. Some little time was spent in conversation and pleas- ant reunions, and then the leading spirits of the evening were called upon for some speeches. Miss Willard expressed her gratification at meeting so many of the W.C.T.U. people from ail over the country, and then went on to | make an address, in which she spoke a good | many words of praise for the union as well as for the guest of the evening, whom she intro- duced as a queen among women. The projectors of the proposed stenographie association have every reason to feel highly en- couraged at the enthusinsm and interest dis- played in the new organization at the first meeting last night. The new association may be said to have been born grown up, and in all probability will be spared most of the troubles and mishaps of new clubs. The meeting last night was held in Dennison Hall.on F street, and the fact that there was an evident need for an organization which would dray closer the bond of fraternity between the many dallyers with the vowel and consonant was evidenced by the large attendance. Some fifty would-be members, over fifteen being ladies, sat arourd the hall and listened to the remarks of Mr. Willard Fracker, who called the meet- i Mr. Fracker disconrsed, on the proposed association and the great good to all concerned which would be aceom- plished with an easy flow, of thoughts and anguage that made fifty hands in t anxious to take down his remarks in those awe- inspiring lines and eurves which nre so mys- terious to the uninitiated. Mr. Fracker said the club was bound to be a success, and he was iced to see it started. Good rooms must be med, he said, and the quarters must be ! up ina comfortable manner. He wanted also to see a good library estublished and if poc- sible the elub rooms should contain a billiard room. Temporary officers were clected at the close of Mr. Fracker's remarks as follows: Willard Fracker, president; Otis P. Goodall, first vice president: Mrs. M. H. Day, second. vice presi- s. B. Sheibiey, secretary: O. P. Derby, carer. consisting of Messrs, . Towers, De Knight and “4 for the preparation of a proper constitution and by-laws. Until this committee should report and the organization be permanently effected an executive commit- tee, consisting of the president and Messra. | Pope, Derby.
