Srarormero, I1., Feb. 7.—The republicans have not lost hope of finally making a combi- nation with the F.M. B.A. party, although nothing has come of yesterday's conference At a meeting of the republican steer- ing committee yesterday Mr. Streeter, F. M. BA. candidate for Senator, was aked how far he would act with the te- pidlican party in the senate if he was elected. le replied it would be bis duty to stand by the farmers and industrial organizations in economic principles. They are advocating for relief. Aside from this be would stand with the republican party. Asked how about the elections bill. He said frankly he was heartily in favor of a measure to support the people of the south in « free bal- lot, haying been brought to this conviction of necessity for such legislation by his own per- sonal experience in Arkansas two years ago. At thet time he was the presidential candidate of the united labor party and was sent to the state of Arkansas to participate in the campaign. He mentioned instances of in- timidation and destroying of ballot boxes, and said instead of the union labor ¥ Teceiving 25,000 majorty, which was theirs by careful estimate, when’ returns came in the democrats hed gotten that majority in their own column. For these occasions, be think there is need of protection to voters in sume the cotton-growing states. > THE NEW ITALIAN MINISTRY. Premier Rudini Firmly Attached to the Triple Allinace His Advisers. Bexxix, Feb. 7.—The Frankfort Gazvtle to~ day published a letter written by the Marquis di Rudini, the new Italion prime minister. The letter is’ dated November, 189, and says that without the triple alliance, which bas proved to be a genuine alliance, the security of Peace is impossible. Speaking of naval and military economics, the marquis in this letter says: “I shall vote to reduce military expenses which will not effect the number or the efti- ciency of the soldiers.” ina FOUR TIMES CHAMPION. Lxxps, Feb. 7.—A tin box containing dyna- mite was discovered today concealed in the gas works of this city. Itis supposed that the dynamite was placed where it was found by workmen who bave recently been discharged from the gas works. The police are investi- gating the outrage. ‘The company has offered a reward for the arrest of the culprits. — FRIGHTENED FROM THEIR HOMES. Settlers Who Are Alarmed by False Reports of Indian Raids. Sr. Pact, Mixx., Peb. 7.—Sheriff Youngren and County Auditor Jadis of Kitson county, who have just returned to Hallolock from Roseau valley and Lake of the Woods, report to Gov. Merriam that the settlers because of the Indian scare are leaving those localities in large wumbers. At Jadis, on the Roseau river, the settlers were building u stockade and had ized a volunteer company to defend them- ves against the Indians. The two county officials say that the whole business seems to have been started by evil-disposed persons. Between 300 and 400 people have left their homes, most of them iu a very destitute condi- tion. As they left their stock to shift for them- elves they will doubtless lose many cattle. —=—, NOT DISHEARTENED. ‘The Friends of Free Coinage Hope to Get » Vote on the Main Question The friends of free nilver coinage in Congress are somewhat disappointed but not disheartened by the result of the vote in the House commit- tee of the whole yesterday. They do not con- cede that the vote on Mr. Bland’s appeal from the decision of the chair represents the full strength of silver in the House by any means. y that the advocates of free coinage were handicapped in that test, on account of ‘They heavily the apparent conflict with the rules, which in- p me 29 many silver men to op the ap- whereas they would have surely voted for Kew’ soumgs on any direct, fair and square imeue.
