Henson, colored, who was on trial in | the Folice Court this morning for alleged ae-| NV saalt on W. Calvin Chase. Hensoa is steward at the Freedman’s Hoo-| ws jal and Chase is editor of the Bee, in addition - holding the office of food inspector for the | District. The trouble ocurred yesterday afternoon in a store corner of 7th and Pomeroy streets. Chase some time ago negotiated a loan of $150 for Henson and charged him $10 for his serv- ices. Henson thought that Chase ought not to have charged him the #10 and he had a bad feeling for the editor. When the editor and inspector was looking over some meat in the store mentioned Henson entered and, after using the bad language stated. struck at him and attempted to usea knife on him. The affair attracted a large crowd and several of the spectators called to | Chase to shoot Henson Policeman Mulloy arrested Henson and took the knife from him. . Henson, who was defended by Lawyer Shil- lington. claimed that Chase struck him firet, and he then threatened to “knife” Chase if he struck him again. ‘The court fined Henson #15. — THE MOHONK CONFERENCE. How the Negro Shall Best Be His Duties as a Citizen, A meeting of the executive committee of the Mohonk conference on the negro question was held in New York on Tuesday. ‘This committee consists of President Cates of Amherst College, M. Hayes War, and “The Elevation of the Home and the Fam- ily.” One session of the conference will be de- d to the reading of reports from various societies and organ. religious. now at work in the south. Ex-Presi- | dent Hayes will preside at all the meetings and | will deliver an introductory address. It ix the | desire of the conference to exclude ali inten perate and partisan debate and to discuss in a fraternal way the best methods of elevating the negro and preparing, him for the discharge of in duties as a- citizen. A full program of | the subjects and speakers is to be published some time before the holding of the conference. — The National Geographic Societ: ‘The program of the meeting of the Geographic Society tomorrow evening the | _ hall of the Cosmos Club has been issned, and it | m by several speakers on | the U.S.S. In the case before the court Patrick F. Conroy was defend- | ant. He stopped his horse on North Capitol street w and tied a weight to the animal. | Mr. Conroy said he did what he could to | keep the horse from the tree, but the animal drequed the weight along and took a little of | off the tree. In the case of Margaret Demonet against George H. Demonet recently the complainant, after dismissing her petition for a limited di- vorce, tiled a petition for an absolute divorce, | as stated in Tux Sram. She denies the allega- tions made by the husband in his answer to ber former bill. ‘She states they were married in May, 1885, and lived together till December last, and charges that he gradually became careless and indifferent to her. and that finally his acta of violence endangered her health and life. She cites number of acts of bad treat- ment. On one occasion, she says, on returning from chureh he told her be had prayed to get rid of her. She alleges among others that he had locked her out of the house, had struck her. tantalized her by stating that he had been to see the girls and set up the champagne; at- tempted to throw her out of a buggy. and bad ved. kicked and threatened to kill. When arrested for the last named offense, she says, be swore that she was drunk and afterward owned that it was false.
