= D.C, THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 1891. THE EVENING STAR: WASHINGTON THE SCHOOL BoaKD. A Discussion on Physical Culture—Changes in Teacherships—Other Matters, ‘There was a brief discussion at the meeting of the school board last evening in regard to the system of physical culture taught in the pablic schools. The subject was brought up by the reading of « letter transmitted to the board by the District Commissioners from Secretary Blaine commending to their atten- tion Dr. Nissen, a teacher of gymnastics and physical culture. From what Mr. Thayer and other members aid this gentleman had called to see them in regard to his appointment to a position in the public schools. They stated that he had criticised rather severely the eys- | tem now in vogue. It was developed that the | members generally knew little about the present method of teaching, although it was «nid that no complaints or criticisms had reached them. | ‘The mstruction in this branch, it was stated, was in the hands of a directress and three | assistants, INFORMATION WANTED. While the opinion was expressed that this application for a place furnished no suiticient | Feagon for making any change, yet, as there seemed to be a lack of information about what ‘was now being done, it was decided to ask Su- | perintendent Powell to submit to the board his views a to the present method of instruction and whether any change was deemed advisable. | As there is no vacancy im the position asked for | by Dr. Nissen his application was referred to | Mr. Powell, who will base upon it a general Teport upon the subject of the teaching of | physical culture in the schools of the District. SECRETARY GURLEY'S RESIGNATION. The resignation of Mr. J. G. Gurley as secre- tary of the board was read and it was directed to be accepted by the superintendent in a letter which should properly express the appreciation Of the board of the efficient service rendered | by Mr. Gurley during the six years he filled the | position. Mr. Gurley has accepted a position | in the Post Office Department. The board elected W. J. Chinn temporary secretary. Mr. Chinn has been connected with the office of the superintendent for several years.
