PAY OF GOVERNMENT PRINTERS. Mr. Gorman explained the difference be- tween the Honse bill and the substitute and expressed his preference for the former, which yes practically payment by the hour instead of by the piece. Mr. Cullom took the same position. "ranting, expressed hi murprine at the pout on printing, exp: ise at i prayer by his colleague on the committee | Gir. The mt pay was by the thousand ems. He did not that the ex- cellent and reputable artisans in the public printing office had any cause for complaint either as -to the justice or generosity of Con- gress. ‘Their compensation exceeded that paid in the average printing office. Two or three years ago. they were allowed by Congress an annual leave of fifteen days, with full pay, which increased the appropriation over $100,000. At the very next session of Con- ‘a demand had been ‘made for thirty days ve as given to the department clerks, and it was accorded to them at a cost of some €200,000 a year. KOCH’S SECRET The Ingredients of the Curative Lymph Made Known, A DESCRIPTION OF HIS DISCOVERY: How the Famous German Doctor Worked Out His Discovery. GOV. BOYD IN POSSESSIO KocH’s LYMPH. N Pror. | The Secret of the Ingredients Given tothe World. } Braurx, Jan. 15.—The long-talked-of secret of the ingredients entering into the compod- } tion of Prof. Koch's famous lymph is given to- day to the world at large Prof. Koch says: “Since publishin months ago, the reaults of my experiments with the new remedy for tuberculos Sirians who received the pre unable to hecome acquainte tice chrongh th Thave been ab | liahed and the ¢ my indications have heen fully and completely confirmed. The ge ents of opin | is that remedy has a specific effect upon tuber- | cular tiseues, and ix, therefore, appli | very delicate and sure reagent fer ¢ j latent and diagnosing doubt | Processes | “Regarding the curative effects of the remedy | most reports agree that, despite the compara- | tively short duration of the applic | patients have shown more or les: pr | improvement. It hn= been affirmed | 4 few cases even a cure has been established. Standing quite by itself is the assertion that the remedy may not only be dangeroas in eases which have advanced too far—a fact which may forthwith be conceded buat also that it actu- ally promoted the taberculous process, being | therefore injurious |, “During the past six weeks I myself have prtunity to bring together further ex- |periences touching the curative effects and | diagnostic application of the remedy in. the cases of about one hundred and fifty sufferers from tuberculosis of the most varied types in this city and in the Moabit Hospital. I can only say that everything I have latterly secn accords with my previous observation — There has been nothing to modify in what I before | reported. HOW THE LYMPH was DIRCOVR: “Before going into the remedy itself, I deem it necessary, for the better understanding of ite mode of operation, to state briefly the way by | which I arrived at the discovery. If # healthy guinea oculated with the | pure of German kaltar jot ib the wound caused by the inoculation mostly closes over | with «sticky matter and appears, in ite early days, to beal. Only after ten to fo « hard nodule presents itself, whic break- ing, forms an ulcerating « which continues until the animal dies. Quite a different condi- tion of things occurs when a guinea pig al- | ready suffering from tuberculosis ix inocnlated. An animal successfully imoculated from four to six weeks before is best adapted for this | purpose. In such an animal the small indenta- tion assumes the mame sticky covering at the ing, but no nodule forme. On the con- 1 the day following or the second day atte the inoculation, the place where the lymph in injected shows a strange “te rteen dave becomes hard and assumes a da: ing, w it confined wi |spot, bat spreads to the neighboring parte } until it attains a diamoter of from .05 to @ cen- |timeter. In 9 few days it become more and | more manifest that the skin thus changed is necrotic, finally falling off, leaving # fat uleer- ation, which usually heals rapidly and perma- nently without any cutting into the lymphatic glauds. EFPECT OF IXSECTED TUBERCULAR PACTS. “Thus the injected tubercular bacilli quite differently affects the skin of a bealthy guinea pig from one affected with tuberculosis. This [ettect is not exclusively produced with living | tubercular bacilli, but is also absorbed with the | dend Lacilli, the result being the axme whether, as I discovered by — experiments at |the outset, the bacilli are killed by ja somewhat prolonged application of a low temperature, of boiling heat or by means of certain chemicalx. ‘This peculiar fuct I fol- | lowed up in all directions and this ferthe> result war obtained —that killed pure cultivations of | tubercudar bacilli, after rinsing in water, might be injected in great quantities under healthy guinca pig's skins without anything occurring beyond local «uppuration.” Prot. Koch here in ‘a note that euch injections belong to the eimplest and surest meaus of producing suppuration free from tiv- | ing bacteria. guinea pigs, on the other hand, | “Tuberculous are killed by the injection of very small quan. tities of such diluted cultivations, in fact within six to forty-eight hours, accord- ing to the strength of the dore. An injection which is not sufficient to produce the death of the animal may cause nded necrosis to the skin in the vicinity of lace of injection. If the dilution is still diluted until it is scarcely visibly fart! clouded, the animals inoculated remain alive anda noticeable improvement in their condi- tion soon supervenes. If the injections are continued at intervals of from one to two days the ulcerating inoculation wound becor willer and finally scars over, which otherwise it never does; the size of the swollen lymphatic glands is reduced, the body becomes better nourished and the morbid pro- | cess ceases, unless it hax gone too far, in which | case the animal perishes from exhaustion. By this means the basis of a curative against tuberculosis was established. A SOLUBLE REMEDY NECESSARY. Against the practical application of such dilutions of dead tubercle bacilli there pre- sented itself the fact that the tubercle bacilli are not absorbed at the inoculation points, nor do they disappear in another way, but fora long time remain unchanged and greater or smaller supparative foci. Anything: there- fore, intended to. exercises ing ef- effect on tuberculous process must be cz would be lixiviated to a certain extent by the fluids of the body floating around the tubercle becilll and be ‘transferred in «fairly rapid manner to the juices of the body, the substance produci sspyrrachin ap ntly remains in ‘tubercular iit limmalven bat very clowty. ‘The it point was, fore, 40" induce endo the ~ Tract from thre tubercular bacilli alone the cura- tive substance. This demanded time and until I finally succeeded with the aid of 40 to per cent solution of glycerine in obtaining an effective substance from the tubercular ble in fifty per cent glycerine. Consequently it contains a F f I E ments, but under Gov. hos taken poescesion of tite rooms.
