President Harrison, with the assistance of Postmaster General Wanamaker and Gen. Whitfield, the third assistant postmaster gen- eral, is making an investigateon into the recent killing of J.P. Matthews, postmaster at Carroll- ton, Carroll county, Miss. Mr. Matthews was the third appointment to the postmastership of that town since May 31 of last year. R. C. Hansbrough was appointed on that date, but his commixsion was Peneld, and R. H. Hans- brough, his son, was then appointed and took charge ‘of the ‘office. Soon afterward, how- ever, his bondsmen withdrew and he was un- able to again qualify and accordingly surren- dered the office. August 20 last J. P. Matthews was appointed and took possession of the office in the following October. The records of the Post Office Department show that in 1875 one F. A. Doss was appointed postmaster at Car- rollton. Some time later the office became vacant, in what manner the records do not show, but among the applicants for the place when Mr. Matthews was appointed was a Miss V. A. E. Doss, who in her application for the office states that her brother was at one time postmaster at Carrollton and “died for his re- publicanism.” . For Col. McCauley’s Place. ‘The contest for the position of colonel and commandant of the marine corps is now wax- ing hot, as the time approaches for the retire- ment of Col. McCauley, which occurs in about amonth. The race is conceded to be between Cols. Hebb and Haywood, both of whom are strenuous efforts to obtain the prize. ‘A good deal of pressure is being brought to bear on Secretary Tracy in this case by the friends of both men, but he has as yet made no mention of any preference in the matter. —— Latest Army Orders.
