THE ISSUE PRESENTED. “Whether if Mr. Parnell persists in refusin, to retire from the leadership, the tory party will win at the general election by such a majority as will condemn Ireland to another | seven years of coercion and destroy all hope of gaining home rule by parliamentary action in our time. ‘This, and this alone, is the ques- which the Irish people have to consider. the various other questions which are at being hotly debated by Irixhmen all over the world are irrelevant wide issues, raised for no other purpose than to divert the public mind from the one great issue on whi@h ir. Parnell knows that he ix hopelessly in the wrong. and with which neither his manifesto nor any of his recent speeches has ever at- tempted to deal. GLADSTONE NOT A DICTATOR. “Mr. Parnell complains of Mr. Gladstone's criticised in some quarters for failing to order | the military to make a direct attuck npon the Indians. Naturally the troops who were as- sembled near Pine Ridge, Stand: ther points @ould see no reason why a prompt and early movement on the hostiles should not be made, but while they were lying inac- tive other troops were being massed at various trategical points, so as to complete! round the troublesome Indians, time is ripe a movement will be inangurated.” Gen. Miles left for Pine Ridge last night. SITTING BULL'S CAREER. Sitting Bull was born about 1837. He was the principal chief of the Dakota Sioux, who were driven from their reservation in the Black Hills by miners in 1876 and took up arms against the whites and friendly Indians, refusing to be transported to the Indian territory. In June, 1876, they defeated and masmered Gen. George A. Custer’s advance party of Gen. Alfred H. Terry's colums, which was sent against them, on Little Big Horn river, and were pursued north- tio attempt to dictate to the Irish party. Yet in 1882, after the assassination in Phenix Park, Mr. Parnell, without consulting any of his col leagues, went to Mr. Gladstone and offered to give up the leadership, resign his seat for Cork and retire from public life, and that at a time when Mr. Gladstone was not a home ruler and was not an ally of ours, and it was only at Mr. Gladstone's pervonal request that Mr. Parnell retained his position. What has Mr. Gladstone done in the present case? For nine days after the verdict in the divorce suit he waited in silence, expecting Mr. Parnell todo as he had done in 1882. “Then when he was convinced, from all the information at his command, that the general election was hopelessly lost if Mr. Parnell re- tained the chair of the Irish party, Mr. Glad- stone took steps to inform Mr. Parnell pri- ward by Gon. Terry. Bitting Bull with a part of his band made his escape into British terri- tory and through the mediation of Dominion officials surrendered on a promise of pardon in 1880. In July and August, 1888, he influenced his tribe to refuse to relinquish Indian lands. BANKERS ASSIGN. Maris & Smith of Philad@phia Temporarily ‘Embarrassed —Other Suspensions.
