The soloists all come from Boston and have been selected with especial reference to their adaptability for oratorio work. He, as one of the order, preached a strong ser- mon on the evils of intemperance and of the liquor traffic, before one of the largest andi- ences he has ever faced. He briefly reviewed the history of the order and then launched forth on the topics of his discourse. His plat- form in reference to the District was thus ex- pressed: “If I were Pesident—and I wich I were— there should not bea licensed saloon in the District of Columbia. No monarch in Europe has a more absolute power than the President 80 far as the government of thix District is con cerned. If I'were in his place J would appoint three Commissioners who would never grant a single license; but, moreover,” said he, “I would furnish them 'an army, to sleep on its arms if necessary, to maintain their position. The raloon must go or the republic will die.’ Last yeat, he went on to say, the Commis- sioners proinised that they wonld issue but 400 licenses, but by the end of the year 1,270 saloons had been anthorized to carry on busi- nese. Over a thousand spectaters, many of them ladies, turned out to see the sport and they were well repaid, for they saw the home team give the visitors a hard and steady fight even if they could not play a winning game. At the start it looked as though the Columbias would have things all their own way. Butterworth started off with a good run for twenty yards and then Cash got it and a struggle ensued. The Columbias kept the ball, however, and on the next rush broke through Lafayette’s line and scored u touch down. Butterworth failed to kick the goal. ‘This was the last score of the day for the local team, but the college boys | started in and piled up eighteen to their credit. | While the individual playing of the Columbias | Was quite as brilliant as that of the Lafayettes, their team’ play was hardly as good, and this fact had more than enything else to do with their defeat. ‘The Kendall foot ball team played with the team from the Naval Academy Saturday after- noon at Annapolis, Both teams played a hard, sharp game, but the middies were too much for their opponents and came off the victors by a score of 24100. In the first half a safety, two touch downs and two goals guve a score of 14, and this wax increased in the second half to 24 by two touch downs, from one of which a goul was kicked. THANKSGIVING DAY GAMES. Thanksgiving day has gradually become the day of the year for great foot ball games all over the country. The chief of these, of course, is the Princeton-Yale game in New York or Vicinity, but Thanksgiving day will see a game | in this ‘city’ that will rival it in local interest, There is bad blood, and hns been for some time past, between the Georgetown College foot ball team and the Columbias, and the simple an- nouncement that the two are to meet in deadly combat at Capitol Park will be suflicient to raise interest to fever heat, and all the foot ball enthusinsts that are not at Eastern Park, Brook- lyn, will be at Capitol Park, Washington. The feo teams tried to have a game on the college grounds, but it ended ina general row. The coming game, which is to be for the. District championship, will be on neutral ground and the referee and umpire will be imported from out of town if possible, and everything will be done to have the contest decided on its merits. Harvard has been trying for fifteen years to defeat Yale in foot ball, and on Saturday she | succeeded, in the presence of 20,000 spectato: | the score being 12 to 6. The gume was playe: at Springfield, Mass., and special trains were run there from New York and Boston. It was a great victory for the crimson and was vocifer- ously eclebrated.
